1. Presentation
The purpose of this chapter is to make a presentation of the
different helicopter parts used to improve the aero-dynamical
stability in flight.
These parts are:
• The tail unit,
• The horizontal stabilizers,
• The vertical fin.

2. Tail unit
The tail unit consist of :
• A horizontal stabilizer,
• A (dorsal) upper fin,
• A (ventral) lower fin equipped with a tail guard, dedicated to
protect the tail blade.
These vertical and horizontal airfoil sections act as stabilizers.
When subject to relative wind, they tend to:
• Counteract any changes in the helicopter’s attitude,
• Bring the helicopter back to its original attitude after any
deviations.

3. Horizontal stabilizer description
Installed in front of the tail rotor, through the tail boom, the horizontal
stabilizer is made in one light alloy aluminium piece, sheets with
various ribs and a spar.
Note:
The horizontal stabilizer provides attachment for the position lights,
at its left and right ends.

4. Horizontal stabilizer functioning
The horizontal stabilizer has an asymmetric NACA airfoil, set at a
negative angle ( - 2° ± 30’ ) to the horizontal datum.
In flight, when the horizontal stabilizer is subject to a relative wind,
V, this airfoil generates an aerodynamic force, F, which tends to
right the helicopter, and keeps it stable on its pitch axis.

5. Vertical fins description
The vertical stabilizer, composed of two vertical fins, is located at
the tail end of the aircraft.
The fin attachment consists of fittings and spars, bolted on the tail
boom end.
The fittings are bolted on top and below the tail boom end with peel
washers to compensate the gap between the tail boom and the
fittings of the fins.
A wear plate is riveted on the end of the tail boom on the upper
surface.
The spars are bolted together on the last tail boom frame.

6. Vertical fins functioning
Tail unit
Special feature of upper fin:
In cruise flight, the asymmetric NACA airfoil of the upper-fin
generates an aerodynamic force F1, which opposes to the main
rotor's counter torque Cr, and thus reinforces the tail rotor thrust.
This allows the tail rotor pitch to be reduced and thus save power.
Special feature of lower fin:
The symmetric NACA airfoil of the lower fin maintains the helicopter
on its yaw axis in cruise flight.
