How to Use this Resource
Preparation:
Each student will need a graphing instruction sheet, as well as a corresponding blank coordinate grid.
Teachers will need a printed copy of the appropriate key, printed to a transparency sheet if possible.
Selecting the Graph:
Each character in this resource comes with three options…
*For graphing beginners, there is an Alphanumeric version.
*For an intermediate challenge, there is a Quadrant I version (no negative numbers).
*For advanced students, there is a Full Cartesian Grid version with all four quadrants.
Each version above is also presented in two different formats… Option 1 is explicit about the picture to be
graphed. Option 2 is presented as a mystery graph, which allows students to discover the picture on their
own.
The student instruction sheets are coded in the lower left corner. For example: MD-CG-EXP tells you that the
instructions are for graphing Memorial Day, on the Cartesian Grid, and that the picture result is EXPlicitly
shared with students. MD-AN-MYS tells you that the instructions are for graphing Memorial Day, on the
AlphaNumeric grid, and that the picture result is a MYStery, which students will need to discover on their
own.
How to Graph the Picture:
For each coordinate pair, students should find the corresponding point on the graph, and cross the
coordinates off the list as they are located. After finding each point, students connect that point to the
previous point with a straight line segment. When the word “STOP” appears, students do not connect to the
next point.
Teaching Tips:
These are challenging graphs, so be sure that students have experience in locating points on the graph
before beginning. In particular, students should know how to find a point by beginning at the origin (the 0,0
or A,0 point), and going side to side for the first number or letter in the coordinate pair, then up or down for
the second before placing a point on the graph.
Begin the first graph together with students, demonstrating on the SmartBoard or document camera if
possible. This will give students the confidence they need to complete the picture on their own.
The mystery versions of the graphs are fun due to students having the “AHA!” moment, but I suggest having
students use one of the explicit versions for their first experience with picture graphing, then move on to a
mystery version after they have built confidence.
If possible, print a copy of the key on a transparency sheet… makes grading the graphs easy!
