ACTIVITY 1: Familiarization of Common Laboratory Apparatus
INTRODUCTION:
The Chemistry Laboratory provides a safe environment to perform scientifically
experimental investigations to prove certain theories and principles in Chemistry. To be
able to perform such scientific experiments safely and accurately, various laboratory
apparatus and equipment are required. Laboratory apparatus are different tools and
devices used by scientists, researchers, or students to conduct laboratory experiments.
The types of apparatus and equipment found in any given laboratory will vary depending
on how sophisticated the laboratory is, and on the type of experiments performed.
Nevertheless, there are a few basic tools and equipments that are commonly used in
several laboratories.
There are certain general purpose apparatus that can be found in many laboratories
that include tools used for heating, measuring, mixing, as well as observing chemical
reactions. The appropriate apparatus for each of this purpose will be identified in this
activity.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the activity, the student shall be able:
1. Identify and illustrate the different apparatuses based on their physical features.
2. Describe and explain the use of the different laboratory apparatus.
3. Classify the different laboratory apparatus based on their general purpose.
4. Demonstrate the specific use of certain apparatus in different experiment set-up
MATERIALS:
Adapter, Alcohol lamp, Beaker, Buchner funnel, Clamp holder, Clay triangle,
Condenser, Crucible, Crucible tong, Deflagrating spoon, Distilling flask, Dropper,
Erlenmeyer flask, Iron stand, Pipette, Reagent bottle, Porcelain spatula, Stainless
spatula, Spot plate, Suction flask, Test Tube holder, Thermometer, Tirril burner, Tripod,
Volumetric flask, Water trough, Analytical Balance, Conductivity apparatus, Fume hood,
Hotplate, pH meter, Top loading balance, Triple beam balance
PROCEDURE:
1. Examine carefully and describe the physical features of all the apparatus given in the
list. Identify the different parts whenever possible.
2. By means of an illustration, identify and classify the different laboratory apparatus
according to general purpose.
3. Give other possible use or purpose for each of the apparatus you have illustrated.
