219020103 ML Baloyi Assessment 2 Unit 5 1. Most of the buses were declared unroadworthy which threatened the safety of commuters. Consequently, there was a significant number of fatalities during its period of operation. The company was not complying with common law and labour legislation. The SA Roadlink has already caused much more malicious damage to the government property by the accidents that kept occurring throughout the travelled provinces. 2. Drivers were instructed to “double up” on the road, this suggests passenger overcrowding. When a bus becomes overcrowded, the balance of the bus can become compromised. This imbalance not only makes it difficult to maintain control when changing lanes, but may potentially cause injurious accidents when turning. Additionally, the longer its stopping distance thus drivers may end up crashing on vehicles ahead of them. 3. Responsibilities of operators: • To make sure that the drivers are making thorough inspections before getting into the buses. • To ensure that all specifications set out by the Ministry of Transportation and any other related legislative components are upheld. • To ensure that the vehicles are roadworthy by performing regular maintenance and not put them into service that is not compliant. This will guarantee that the vehicles are in good working order.
