An engineer is one of the most important, well-paid and respected job professions in the
modern world. It is good not only for this, but also for how interesting it is: the work of an engineer
always poses a variety of tasks for him, the solution of which requires thinking creatively and acting
outside the box. No wonder Nikola Tesla said: "I don't care that they stole my idea. I care that they don't
have any of their own".
Engineering brings a lot of benefits to humanity by developing new medicines, carrying out
research, creating advanced technologies and designing new products: aeronautical engineering has
designed airplanes that allow us to get to anywhere in the world in less than a day, aerospace
engineering has allowed us to explore new worlds, thanks to civil engineering, we live in large warm
comfortable homes.
All of the above has undoubtedly helped greatly improve people's lives, but these inventions
exist only thanks to one of the greatest engineering achievements - the assembly line. After all, it was
the conveyor belt that at one time allowed people to increase production capacities, moving forward
the industry and, along with it, engineering.
The usefulness of engineering does not end there - it can not only improve the lives of billions of
people, but also save them. There are many disaster scenarios that can jeopardize the very existence of
humanity. As an illustration, a huge meteorite, a collision with which will erase all life from the face of
the Earth, famine caused by overpopulation, the invasion of aggressive aliens.
Engineers will be the first to struggle with all these problems. They will first need to use highpowered instruments that can detect the asteroid, that approach the Earth, at a great distance, make
predictions about behavior, and then design a probe that can fly towards it in order to change the
direction of the asteroid and avoid a collision. To prevent hunger, they will need to build huge
automated systems that will allow them to harvest more often. Besides, it is engineers who will have to
develop weapons with which people can resist the invasion of a more advanced civilization. And
although this listing sounds short, each of these actions takes a lot of work: you need to develop a
mathematical model, build a prototype, and finally make a production version.
One of the most impressive man-made structures I've heard of is transoceanic submarine
communication cables. When they began to lay them, the telephone had not yet been invented, the
telephone had not yet been invented, but now the most modern technologies have been implemented
into them. At the moment, there are cables 1.2 million kilometers long on the ocean floor. Their
combined weight is several times the weight of the Burj Khalifa, and their laying cost mankind many
billions of dollars. But despite these huge costs, cables easily pay for themselves in their usefulness: 99
percent of all intercontinental traffic passes through them. It is this mega-structure that allows us to call
America, or, for example, see a photo of a cat posted on the Internet by an Australian.
Often building super structures is like employ a steam engine to crack a nut, for instance, huge
skyscrapers, pyramids in Egypt - it only exists to give the country a sense of pride. But it happens that
you simply cannot do without huge sizes and prices. Tall dams, long suspension bridges, long
underwater tunnels, the cables already mentioned are all very expensive and incredibly complex
structures, but they can often pay for their construction surprisingly quickly and stimulate the country’s
economic growth, provide a wide range of jobs. In fact, now Turkey has begun to dig a new man-made
canal near the Bosphorus. The construction of a canal 47 kilometers long and 100 meters wide should
cost $ 13 billion, but if at least a tenth of the ships prefer a man-made canal over a congested natural
canal, then its construction should pay off in 10 years.
To summarize, engineering is one of the most important areas of human activity, which truly
allows people to customize the world around them.
