Explanatory essay helps readers get a better understanding of a topic by
highlighting the relationships between sources.
The goal is to explain/argue a particular topic from all angles.
Introduction

Gives background

Demonstrates a comprehensive grasp of the topic by discussing the
significance of the issue by concisely summarizing the topic and explaining its
relevance (using the prompt)

Markers: this is significant/serious/dangerous/critical because…)

Ends with a clear thesis statement addressing two main ideas addressed in
the extracts


Begin with a clear topic sentence addressing one main point

Ideas are synthesized to show the similarities/differences/additions among
different sources using lead in phrases





