In the Reading section, you will answer questions about reading passages. The Reading Review screen will indicate only which questions you have answered. 2. In the Listening section, you will answer questions about conversations and lectures. There is no Review screen in this section. 3. In the Speaking section, you will be presented with four questions. The first question is about a familiar topic. The other questions ask you to speak about reading passages, conversations, and lectures. 4. In the Writing section, you will be presented with two writing tasks. The first task asks you to write about a reading passage and a lecture. The second task asks you to write a post for an academic discussion. 02 TOEFL iBT Part 1 Reading Reading at a glance - Directions ● In this section, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to understand academic passages in English. You will read and answer questions about two passages. ● You will have 36 minutes total to read both passages and respond to the questions. A clock will indicate how much time is remaining. ● Some passages may include an underlined word or phrase that you can select to see a definition, an explanation, or an illustration. ● You can skip questions and go back later. Types of texts: Expository Argumentative The author will give a general explanation of a topic. It will be a general introduction to a topic that you might find at a North American university The author will present a point of view and then provide supporting information for that point of view. Historical The author will present a person or event from the past. Understanding the organizational style is important because you can look for information that helps to answer questions more efficiently. Question types Detailed questions: Ask about a fact or a detail. Negative Fact questions: Requires you to find the answer option that is false. Vocabulary questions: Choose the definition that best describes a highlighted word in the text. Reference questions: A grammar question that tests your understanding of pronouns. Function questions: Asks about the author’s purpose. Inference questions: Draw a conclusion based on information in the text. Sentence Summary questions: Choose the option that best summarizes a sentences from a text. Text insertion questions: Insert a sentence in the most appropriate place. How did you do?
