is an incredibly demanding and arduous process. Step 1 is one of the most significant obstacles you will face in your journey to become a doctor. The sheer volume of material leaves many students anxious, and in some cases underprepared for the exam. Now that the exam has become Pass/Fail, it is even more important to focus on the highest yield concepts. Some students have started to study lightly for Step 1, in an effort to place more emphasis on Step 2. My recommendation is to take Step 1 seriously, and dedicate yourself to building a strong foundation. A strong foundation in Step 1 will set you up to absolutely crush Step 2. Together, we will focus on simplifying the complex, drowning out the noise, and building up your confidence every day. Let’s do this! – Dr. Roviso & the Med School Bootcamp Team Bootcamp.com 1 Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule Organization of Study Schedule This schedule consists of 9 weeks of dedicated studying with Med School Bootcamp. Each week is divided into six full days and one half day (except week 9). Each day is divided into a morning and afternoon, both of which contain four 70 minute slots. Some days may have shorter videos integrated into the 70 minute slots, other days may have two slots merged together for a chapter that exceeds 70 minutes. A Note on Supplemental Resources Myself and the team here at Medschool Bootcamp are in your corner. We have designed this curriculum from the ground up to prepare you for Step 1 P/F. We are still actively working to complete the last 10% of total content in Microbiology, Endocrinology, Musculoskeletal / Rheumatology, and General Pharmacology. With that being said, it will be beneficial to supplement with resources such as Sketchy Micro, Sketchy Pharm, First Aid, Boards and Beyond, and Physeo. Most of these have free trials, take a look and see what works for you. Finally, we are here for you and you are not alone in this process!! If you have any specific questions, we have TA support available. In the case that you would like to discuss more broad topics such as the schedule, curriculum planning, or how to manage your stress level during this time, you can also feel free to email us. Everyone on this team is here to support you in any way that we can! Join a Step 1 Study Community https://www.reddit.com/r/step1/ This study group is an extremely valuable resource while you study for Step 1. I recommend signing up for two reasons: First, if you ever have a question on a concept, practice problem, or something about Step 1, it’s very likely that someone on there will help you out. Second, you can help out other people with their questions. You remember 10% of what you read, but 90% of what you teach. Even if you don’t know the answer to someone’s question, look it up and explain it to them. You’ll learn something new, it’ll stick with you for a long time, and you will have actually helped someone else out. Bootcamp.com 2 Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule Self Care Although 9 weeks of ongoing studying can seem exhausting, it will also fly by before you know it! Your stamina should improve as you reach the later weeks, however it is possible that you can also become fatigued. To avoid “burning out’, I recommend that you stay mindful and maintain your personal wellness. During stressful and demanding times such as these, it’s easy to sacrifice your mental and physical health for the exam. However, I would recommend against this. The importance of giving yourself enough time to focus on you cannot be understated. For some this might mean a gym session or run before their first study block. For others, it can mean spending quality time with those closest to them. It may be a good idea to make a list of five or so items that you would like to do each week and make space for them in your schedule. Weeks 1-2 During the first two weeks, we will primarily target content learning. Each unit gradually adds layers of difficulty onto previously discussed material. Units such as Cardiology, Pulmonology, Hematology, are interwoven throughout each day, as opposed to learning the material one unit at a time. I believe this method will be more effective for students as the real exam incorporates all units randomly throughout each block of questions. Each week also involves time spent for active recall. I recommend doing all of the Bites questions for each chapter after watching the videos. During Bites review blocks, the previously presented Bites questions should be reviewed to reinforce the concepts. You can also supplement this time with an Anki deck. We would encourage you to focus the Anki cards on material learned previously in the unit videos for more effective active recall. Bootcamp.com 3 Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule Weeks 3-5 Weeks three through five are a transition period between solidifying previously learned concepts, and continuing to learn new content. During this time we begin to integrate board-style questions into the 70 minute blocks. It is recommended that you tag material that is foreign for review during your Bites/Anki review blocks. This can be challenging for some as many people will have a low threshold for tagging topics for review. Try to find your perfect balance that will not overwhelm the amount of time needed to review content. This also holds true for time used to review your board style questions. 70 minutes to review 40 explanations is also not an easy task. This requires each explanation to be reviewed in less than 2 minutes. Some of this time can be made up in smaller chapters that are scheduled for 70 minute blocks, however we would recommend to be 100% engaged during the board question review blocks so you don’t greatly exceed the time needed to complete this task. Some students will spend an entire day reviewing 40 questions, and that may work for some, however our goal is to maximize effectiveness and efficiency simultaneously (and get used to this because this is medicine!). With that being said, you can experiment with this to determine what works best for you. Weeks 6-8 For the runners out there, many will tell you that the second to last mile is the most difficult to run. Weeks six through eight are when the stress level starts to reach new heights and doubt can try to sneak its way into your thoughts. This time period is probably one of the most challenging so mentally prepare yourself for these weeks in advance. We start to integrate NBME exams on day 6 of each week. These are important stamina-builders and can give you indication of where you currently stand. During the later portion of this time period, board-style questions will take over your day. This is integrated with Bites/Anki review for the weaker areas and topics that you tagged earlier in the dedicated period. Bootcamp.com 4 Med School Bootcamp Step 1 Study Schedule Week 9 This is it. Everything you prepared for is yours for the taking! Easier said than done, I know, I’ve been there. The most important thing you can do during this time is to keep this all in perspective. It is easy to discount all the work you put in to get to this point. And also remember, by no means is your future as a physician defined by any single written exam. With that being said, give this last week all you have left in the tank. I recommend that you spend day 5 of this week reviewing exclusively. The idea here is you want all of those quick recall facts to be at your fingertips for test day. At the end of day 5 it is recommended that you go into a full 24 hour rest day. This would include not opening up your computer to “just look something up real quick”. Disconnecting from it all during this 24-hour period will give your brain a chance to refresh and relax for the following day. Try your best to get a full night of sleep before the test. It might also be a good idea to prepare food for your breakfast/locker during the exam. I am wishing you all the best. Let us know how Step 1 goes on our After Step 1 page! You got this! -Dr. Anthony Roviso & the Med School Bootcamp team Bootcamp.com 5
