You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the workbook.
For the learner:
Welcome to the Computer Systems Servicing (NC II) Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
workbook!
The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!
This workbook was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled
to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner. It has
suggested learning activities on Computer Systems Servicing (NCII) and it includes
training materials and activities to be accomplished.
Completion of this module will help you better understand the succeeding
module on Computer Systems Servicing.

What’s In
Computers are useful in daily lives of people like conducting research,
paying bills, shopping online, connecting with other people, and performing
business activities. People usually used desktop computers, smartphones,
laptops, tablets, netbooks, and the like.
With increased number of users of computers, the necessity of being
ready in the knowledge of assembly, maintenance, and repair of computers
due to the various treats such as system failure, crash, malicious programs
(such as viruses and data losses and many others) should be always be
considered.
What is a COMPUTER?
Computer is an electronic hardware device. It operates and functions
under the control of instructions called programs stored in its memory.
A computer works like a human brain. The brain stores information
from our senses and then use these to guide human actions. A computer
needs information to work on, and it is called data.
A computer can receive and accept data, then processes them using the
program set by the user. Data entered into the computer are in the form of
text, images, sounds, and videos. The computer processes these data then
produces an output information to be used by the people. Processed
information are stored in the computer’s memory.
Processing Questions No. 1
True or False. Directions: Mark ∕ if the statement is true and X if it is
false. Write your answer on the space provided for before each number.
1. Computers are like human beings.
2. CPU is the main storage of information in the computer.
3. Data are entered into the computer, then be processed to become an
output.
4. Computer needs information to function called “data”.
5. Computers are necessary when conducting a research,
communication and business activities.

What’s New
What are the classifications of computer?
Computers are classified into 5 categories:
1. Supercomputers
2. Mainframe computers
3. Mid-range computers
4. Microcomputers
5. Handheld computers
Supercomputers. These are the most powerful computer available. These
high capacity computers that run continuously are being used by very large
organizations, mostly big corporations and government institutions. Users of
supercomputers are NASA and the US government.
Mainframe computers. There are less powerful than supercomputers but
are capable of great processing speed, multi-tasking capability, and high data
storage.
Mid-range computers. These are used by medium size companies for specific
purposes. These are stand-alone system for specialized applications including
network servers.
Handheld computers. These are the smallest computers that are designed
to fit into one hand or palm that is why they are also called “palm top
computers”. These computers may combine pen input, personal organizer
tools, and communication capabilities such as telephone and internet
applications.
Microcomputers. These are also called as “desktop computers”, the most
common and widely used computers today. There are two types of
microcomputers- the desktop computers and notebook computers.
Desktop Computers
Notebook
computers
are small enough to be placed on a desk or table but
are too big to be carried around.
Also known as “laptop computers”, are portable,
lightweight, and are easy to carry around.
What are the personal computers?
1. Desktop computer- is a personal computer in a set up where in it is
located on a desk or table. These are portable computers, but cannot
be carried around due to its heavy weight.
2. Laptop computer- also called as notebook it is a small personal
computer where components, display, keyboard, pointing device,
CPU, and rechargeable battery are packed together in one single
portable unit intended for mobile use.
3. Multi-touch. It is a computer screen that will allow the interaction of
two or more fingers direction onto the screen to give a command.
9
4. Nettop. It is a small size, low voltage, and low power computer. It is
relatively cheap making it ideal for internet tasks and basic word
processing, spreadsheet, PowerPoint, and playing music or video.
Most Nettops have built-in Wi-Fi.
5. Netbook. It is also called a “mini notebook”. It was conceived and
released to the public in 2007 with the release of Asus Eee PC. The
main features of netbook are its small size, light weight, low power
and inexpensive character that appeals to mobile users.
6. Tablet PC. It is a notebook equipped with a touchscreen, which
allows the use to operate the computer using a digital pen or stylus.
7. Pocket PC. It is a handheld or pocket size computer running on
Microsoft Windows Pocket PC edition with all the features of a
modern desktop PC. It has also mobile phone features.
8. PDA. Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) is a handheld computer also
called Palmtop Computer. Modern PDAs have phone capabilities,
web browsers, internet, music, and video. Touch screen is a
standard feature on most PDAs.
9. Smartphone. It is a mobile phone which incorporates the features of
a pocket PC and PDA as described above. Aside from making calls
or texts messages, Smartphones are pocket-sized with all the
advanced hardware and software applications that run on mobiles
OS.

What Is It
Elements of a Computer System
A computer is an electronic device that performs tasks based on
instructions given by the user. Also, it has elements that compose of
the following:
1. People
2. Procedure
3. Software
4. Hardware
5. Data
6. Connectivity
People is the most important part of the Information Systems
Technology. It is the people or the end users like you and me, who will operate,
input the data, and use the resulting information to our personal and
business lives to be productive and make effective decisions. The end user is
a person who uses a computer or network service.
Procedures are the set of guidelines and rules to follow when using
hardware, software applications, and data. The procedures are usually
written and well documented in manuals that are included in most software
packages.
Software or programs are instructions that tell the computer how it
should do its work. The main purpose of a program is to process the data (raw
facts) into usable information.
1. System software – like Windows, Linux, Mac OS X
2. Application Software- like MS Word, Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD
Hardware is the physical equipment that implements the data
processing so that useful information may come as a result.
Hardware are the physical parts or components of a computer as
follows:
Input/output units- mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc.
Memory unit/ storage device, two types are:
o Random Access Memory (RAM)
o Read Only Memory (ROM)
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Communication Devices
Data include texts, images, numbers, music, and video that are still
unprocessed. These are the facts and facet of records that we input into the
computer and then once processed may yield the desired information.
Connectivity allows the computer to access and share data and
information that are available somewhere else. This connectivity means
Internet Connection.
