SWOT Analysis
Strengths:
One significant strength that Mattel has is that it is among the biggest toy manufacturers
in the world. The business appeals to kids of all ages with a diverse product line, and it also has a
strong brand image and portfolio. Mattel owns some of the most iconic brands, such as Hot
Wheels, Barbie, Fisher-Price, UNO, MEGA, American Girl, and Thomas & Friends. This
portfolio has enabled it to create unique and innovative products that demonstrate why they have
strong customer loyalty. Not only are its customer's kids but also the older generation because
Mattel brings about the nostalgia or memories of how it was to play with Mattel toys back when
they were kids as well. Additionally, the company also has a robust distribution network that
enables it to connect with customers around the world. Mattel has also been making investments
in R&D and innovation, which has allowed the company to stay one step ahead of its
competitors.
Weaknesses:
Regardless of its size and being the toy industry leader, Mattel has several weaknesses
that need to be fixed. Its reliance on a few key brands, such as Barbie and Hot Wheels, is one of
its major flaws. The company's sales and profitability will be impacted if there is a decrease in
the demand for these products. Also, Mattel has had trouble in the past with product recalls and
problems with quality control, which has hurt the company's reputation. Their recall of 2007 was
Vidal 2
a massive toy recall, with more than 9.3 million play sets being taken back for containing
hazardous small, powerful magnets. This caused consumers to lose their trust in the company,
thus affecting the company’s profits and image. Third, Mattel has lagged behind its rivals in
implementing new technologies, which has hurt the company extensively. Finally, Mattel is not
doing good in the aspect of social media. Social media can be a powerful tool for businesses that
know how to work it. Unfortunately, Mattel has not yet found ways to emerge productively on
the internet. These weaknesses must be addressed by the company so that it can continue to
operate and grow.
Opportunities:
Mattel has numerous chances to build its company that it can take advantage of. For
example, one opportunity it has is the growing desire for eco-friendly and sustainable toys. The
company may use its innovation and product development skills to manufacture eco-friendly
toys that appeal to consumers who care about the environment. Moreover, Mattel can explore
new markets like those in Africa and Asia, which have large populations and are undergoing
tremendous economic growth. Even though North America remains Mattel’s number one and
most important sales market, expanding to these regions can be of big help to Mattel to boost
profits. Finally, in order to connect customers directly and lessen their dependency on traditional
brick-and-mortar retail, Mattel can also increase its digital presence and engage in e-commerce.
Threats:
Like any other firm, Mattel is vulnerable to several risks that could harm its operations.
The first danger is the escalating domestic and worldwide competition from other toy producers,
such as Hasbro, MGA Entertainment, Disney, etc. Competitors of Mattel have been making
investments in product research and innovation, which has resulted in the production of fresh and

distinctive toys that appeal to consumers. The evolving consumer preferences and behaviors
represent another threat. Customers are getting pickier about the toys they buy, and they are
demanding more and more products that are secure, environmentally friendly, and instructive.
On the other hand, some consumers have stopped buying from Mattel altogether. This is because
kids have stopped playing with traditional toys. Instead, kids nowadays are putting smartphones,
tablets, computers, etc on their Christmas lists. The evergrowing demand for technological
products poses a huge threat to Mattel. Moreover, supply chain concerns such as labor shortages,
interruptions in the transportation system, and shortages of raw materials are also a concern for
Mattel.
