Track 3 Katie: Martin: Katie: Martin: Katie: Martin: Katie: Martin: Katie: Martin: Katie: Martin: Katie: Martin: Hi Martin. It’s Katie. Hi Katie, how are you? I’m fine, thanks. Listen, I know you like music, do you fancy coming to a concert? It’s at the town hall, a group of us are going. The Goblins are playing, you know, Tom’s brother’s the drummer. They’re quite good, you’d like it. Oh, that sounds cool. I like the Goblins, I’ve heard them before. When is it? Oh, sorry, it’s on Friday. It starts at seven. Oh, no. I can’t. I mean, thanks for asking. I’d like to come but I can’t. I go to the pool on Fridays. The pool? Do you mean you go swimming? Every Friday? Well, yes, that’s when we train. Fridays and Tuesdays. I can’t miss it, well, only if I’m ill. Who’s ‘we’? Are you in some kind of team or something? Yes, I swim for the London Schools team. Wow, that’s amazing. I didn’t know. I bet that’s hard work. Yes, it is. I get fed up with it sometimes. But most of the time I enjoy it. And it keeps me fit. Yes, I’m sure it does. I should do more exercise. I don’t really like sport, that’s the only problem. I’m too lazy. You’re good at dancing, though. That’s good exercise. Maybe you could do more? Katie: Martin: Katie: Yes, I suppose I should, actually. Good idea. Thanks for asking me, anyway. Have fun. You too. See you. Bye. Unit 2 Track 4 Unfortunately, / my computer crashed / when I was studying last night. / The keyboard / suddenly stopped working. / I texted my friend / and she helped me find a solution. Track 5 ONE I’m here to tell you about an exciting new washing powder, one that really does bring the bright back to white and says to grey: go away. What is it? It’s Whoosh, that’s what it is. Yes, we’ve used new formula 17SPA to bring you Whoosh. We’re confident that once you’ve tried Whoosh, you’ll never look back. You might need sunglasses, though. TWO The story goes that Benjamin Franklin wanted to find out more about electricity. They say that he waited for a bad storm with thunder and lightning, then flew a kite. Before he launched the kite up into the air he tied a metal key to the string. The electricity from the storm passed through the key and gave him an electric shock. Actually, a lot of people don’t really believe this story. THREE I was camping with some friends last summer. We all had our own small tents, but there wasn't enough room for us all to sit together. So I came up with the idea of buying zippables for our next camping holiday. They are tents that connect. You can have any number of tents in a row, join them up when you want to, then put the side down and you have your own space again. Whoever invented them was a genius, it’ll solve the problem. © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1) TESTS AUDIOSCRIPT FOUR It’s good – you should check it out. They show loads of weird inventions – you know, things that just aren’t going to work. My personal favourite is the solar-powered submarine – I mean, how stupid is that? Oh, then there’s the umbrella hat. Actually, that’s not such a bad idea, I suppose … Anyway, it’s on every Friday. You’d like it. FIVE I was just experimenting, I didn’t really need it. I tested it with a few words, you know, ‘one … two … three … four … testing, testing,’ that kind of thing, and I was amazed, the words just appeared on the screen, really fast. So then I tried a more complicated sentence and it worked perfectly. Well, I was very impressed! I’m going to use it more often now. SIX There’s an app for everything these days, it’s amazing. Did you know, there’s one that can measure your heart rate just by looking at you. Honestly! You just hold it up near your face and it can see slight changes in the colour of your skin. Isn’t that amazing? What’s next, that’s what I want to know. Unit 3 Track 6 Have you been to the cinema / or a gallery this month? / It’s important / to keep up with / what’s happening in the arts. / Looking at paintings / for example, / can be relaxing / and will also make you / use your imagination. Track 7 ONE What’s this? You haven’t seen the latest Spangle film yet? You’re really missing out. It’s the film everyone’s talking about, packed full of action, thrills and surprises. Jamie Beacon gives the performance of his life as a mad but lovable scientist who makes an astonishing discovery. This is the must-see film of the year, so what are you waiting for? Get a move on and book your ticket now, before it’s too late. TWO Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome. We hope you enjoy tonight’s performance. The management would like to remind you that photography is not allowed. You are also requested to make sure that all mobile phones are turned off. There will be a twenty minute interval during which light refreshments will be available in the foyer. Please do not smoke anywhere in the building. Thank you for your cooperation in these matters. THREE Well, the stars are certainly out tonight. Quite a few celebrities have already taken their seats inside the theatre and others are arriving now. I’ve just seen Freddie Highmore, he walked past on the red carpet a few minutes ago. And, oh, right, there’s Emma Watson! She’s looking stunning as usual. I wonder if I can manage to get a few words with her. Oh, Emma? Emma? Just one question, please. No, she’s gone over to talk to some fans. Well, never mind, maybe later, after the ceremony. I’m sure she’ll come out with an award. FOUR It was OK, I mean, nothing special to be honest but entertaining enough. I mean, the acting was brilliant, specially Julia Roberts. She’s so clever, isn’t she? It’s just that the story itself didn’t really work. I didn’t really care about the characters. I wasn’t really interested in how it would end. I liked the music, though. I’d like to get the soundtrack. It was probably the best thing about the film, in my opinion. FIVE Sue: Tom: How about Friends? Oh no, not that one. I’ve seen it so many times. © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1) TESTS AUDIOSCRIPT Sue: Tom: Sue: Tom: Sue: Tom: I know, Tom, me too, but it’s always good for a laugh. No, really, let’s watch something else. What else is there? Umm, how about this? I haven’t watched it yet, someone lent it to me a few weeks ago. It’s supposed to be funny. Umm, maybe, but I’m not really in the mood. Have you got any sci-fi? Yes, I have. But what about this? It’s truly scary. Yeah, go on then, let’s give it a go. Al: Sue: THREE Cathy: Ed: Cathy: Ed: Cathy: Unit 4 Track 8 Ed: could hear all the traffic, and people shouting and laughing, music, you know … What was the food like? Not at all bad actually. And I’ve never seen such a beautiful beach before – but I wouldn’t go again in August, it was so crowded. Hi Ed. Say, have you ever been to Joe’s new house? Oh hi Cathy. No, I haven’t. How long have they lived there? Only about six months, I think. You should go and see it. Why? Well, it’s weird. In a good way. It’s what you’d call an eco-house, I think. Wow! So what’s it like? Has it got solar panels on the roof? Yes, it has. He says they don’t have to pay for electricity at all. And the walls are made of mud. You’re joking! No, honestly. I am unbelievably lucky / because we’re moving house pretty soon. / Our new house / is in the suburbs / in a nice neighbourhood. / I will finally have my own bedroom / with a comfortable bed / and a breathtaking view. Cathy: Track 9 ONE OK, let’s start in here, this is the living room. As you can see it’s a lovely bright room, it faces south so you get the sun most of the day. There’s a good view of the garden from the window. Then through here you have the kitchen and dining room. It’s fully fitted with a smart new cooker, fridge freezer, washing machine, dishwasher – the lot. All included in the price. OK, now I’ll show you the bedrooms, if you’d like to follow me… FOUR Yes, we’re having a great time, thanks. Well, the first few days were a bit of a disaster because it poured with rain and the tent fell down. Anyway, we moved to a little hotel, we’ve been here since Tuesday and we’ll stay here for the rest of the week. It’s great, a proper shower and a warm bed and walls that don’t move [laughs] … It’s more expensive of course, but on the other hand we don’t have to cook or do the washing-up, so it’s a proper holiday… TWO Al: Sue: Al: Sue: Oh, hi, Sue. How was your holiday? What was the accommodation like? Hmmm, not as nice as it looked in the brochure. Oh that’s a shame, what was wrong with it? Well, it was quite noisy, for a start. We had quite a nice view over the town, but we had to keep the windows open at night because of the heat, and then of course we Ed: Cathy: FIVE A: B: A: B: A: How’s your brother enjoying his job in Japan? Oh, he loves it. Has Tom found a flat yet? Yes, he’s had his own place for a month or two now. He sent some pictures, hang on, I’ll show you … there … that’s his living room, and it’s also his bedroom! Wow, it looks really small, and there isn’t much furniture, is there? ... Er… where’s the bed? © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1) TESTS AUDIOSCRIPT B: A: B: Oh, it’s in the cupboard! It isn’t like our beds. It’s a futon – you know, you roll it up and put it away every morning. Wow. How many other rooms are there? Ummm, there’s a little tiny kitchen, and a bathroom and a toilet. That’s all. Oh, and a balcony. SIX Good morning, and welcome to Melchester University. I’m going to explain about the accommodation that we offer to our students here, and then we’ll have a tour so that you can see for yourselves. So, we have two types of accommodation. The first is self-catering. Students live in flats, eight students per flat, and cook all their own meals. They also do their own housework, pretty much everything. Or, you can have a room in a hall of residence, and have all your meals in the dining room. Obviously that’s more expensive, but you wouldn’t have to worry about doing the shopping or what to cook. Oh, and the rooms are cleaned once a week. OK, any questions so far? Unit 5 Track 10 After-school activities / aren’t compulsory / in my secondary school / but many students attend them. / Teachers encourage us / to find a passion / and follow our own interests. / We take it easy / and have a good time. Track 11 Pete: Amy: Pete: Amy: Pete: Amy: Pete: Amy: Hey, Amy, how are you doing? Hey Pete. I’m OK. I was just thinking about when we leave school. Are you going to apply for university? I don’t know. I’m still thinking about it. Well, what sort of job do you want in the future? Hmm, I think I’d like to be a teacher. What subject? Hmm? Oh, History. It’s my best subject by miles. Well, if you want to teach you’ll definitely need to go to university. Pete: Amy: Pete: Amy: Pete: Amy: Pete: Amy: Pete: Amy: Pete: I know, but I’m not really sure yet. I think I’d like to take a year out and go travelling first. Me too, you know I’ve always wanted to go to China. It’s my dream. China, cool. It’s on my list of places to go! Yes, well, I’ll have to wait a while. I don’t want to take any time off between school and university. Why not? Well, I want to be a vet. I’ve always wanted to work with animals. Ever since I can remember. Anyway, it takes six years to qualify. I mean, if I take a year off before I start, I’ll be really old before I even finish the course. Oh, right, yes, good point. Wow! A vet! That’s cool. What subjects do you need to do that? Science, I suppose? Yes, that’s right. And Maths. That’s my weakest subject. Oh, you’ll be fine. Well, maybe. But I’d better get back to my books now, anyway. We’ve got an exam tomorrow, remember? Yes, I remember. I’m on it. See you tomorrow. Unit 6 Track 12 Being self-employed / has many benefits. / You have no boss, / you can sometimes work from home, / and take a day off / when you want. / The disadvantage is / that the money you earn / is dependent on / finding enough work. Track 13 ONE Ambulance drivers, or paramedics, have to keep calm in an emergency and they need to be quick thinkers. They also have to be excellent drivers – © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1) TESTS AUDIOSCRIPT after all, you wouldn’t want to have an accident on the way to hospital, would you? A career as a paramedic would be demanding and challenging, no doubt, but of course there would be disadvantages too. It’s very hard work, and an enormous responsibility of course. And the pay isn’t very good, I’m afraid. TWO I’m thinking of training to be a plumber. It’s what my cousin does and I like the sound of it. You have to go to college and do exams, but obviously it’s mostly practical, I think I’d enjoy it. The thing is, I don’t fancy the idea of working for somebody else, I’d rather be my own boss. So, I’d like to have my own business one day, you know, be self-employed. THREE Sometimes I start really early and have the evenings to myself, sometimes it’s the other way round. I don’t work nights, not yet. I spend some of my time at the front desk, talking to the public. I enjoy that, probably the most. Then there’s an awful lot of paperwork – that’s the bit I dislike, well, we all do. It takes up so much time. I usually go out in a car for a few hours. That’s always with someone else. We answer calls, check out trouble spots, oh and we look out for speeding motorists. We get a lot of those round here. FOUR No, not an office job! Can you imagine it? He can’t sit still for more than five minutes, he’d go crazy indoors all day. No, he needs some kind of outdoor job. He worked all last winter as a ski instructor in Switzerland, it was a holiday job but he’d love to do something like that all the time. It isn’t practical, I suppose. But maybe a sports teacher, something like that? He’d be good at that. FIVE I was very early, in fact I had enough time to go to a coffee shop before I went in. By nine o’clock I was really nervous, I can tell you. Anyway it wasn’t so bad. The manager, his name is Jason Hardwick, showed me round and introduced me to the people in my team. I’m going to work with someone called Amy for the first month, she has to train me, I think. So I spent the rest of the day sitting next to her and just, well, watching what she did. It was OK but a bit boring to tell you the truth. I mean, it isn’t exactly very difficult. I just want to get on with it really. Unit 7 Track 14 Have you ever / been given some clothes / for a birthday present / and then found / they really don’t suit you? / If you have the receipt, / you can take the clothes / back to the shop / and buy something / you like instead! Track 15 ONE I absolutely love shopping and I go to different shopping centres every weekend. I always buy something new. This one is my favourite because you can always pick up a bargain and find all the most popular brands. People say that to be individual you should go to vintage shops instead of shopping centres, but I disagree. There is so much choice and if you are creative you can have a really individual look. Today I’m not shopping for myself, it’s my best friend’s birthday and I’m looking for a present for her. She’s impossible to buy for because she isn’t interested in fashion but I hope I see something she will like. TWO I’ve been working at this shopping centre for about a month now and to be honest I’m not really enjoying it. I work in a clothes shop and the lights are so bright and the music is so loud that I’m exhausted by the end of the day. I’d get a different job if I could. The problem is there aren’t many other options close to where I live. I really need the money because I’m saving for a big holiday when I finish school, so at least I only have to work here for a few more months. © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1) TESTS AUDIOSCRIPT THREE I don’t come to this shopping centre very often but today is a bit different. I volunteer for a charity that provides shoes for children whose families can’t afford to buy them, and today we are collecting money. It makes me sad seeing people spending so much money on new things when there are people in the world who can’t afford anything. But some people are very generous and give a lot of money. When I need to buy new things, I look for very good quality so I know my clothes will last for ages. If I knew how, I’d definitely make my own clothes. Maybe I’ll learn in the future. FOUR I had a free day today with no real plans so I thought I’d come and see if there was anything new in the shops. I often go to the shops just to have a look with no intention of buying anything. I enjoy the atmosphere and seeing what other people are wearing. It gives me ideas about how to dress. I get annoyed when people tell me I should do sports or spend time outside instead of shopping. I got this watch for my birthday and it counts my steps and I often walk ten kilometres when I’m shopping. I think that’s pretty good exercise! FIVE I’m just here to see my friends. I’m not really interested in shopping to be honest, but I like going for coffee and listening to music in different shops. My friends are often telling me what suits me and encouraging me to buy things but I don’t have much money for shopping. I’d rather spend it at the cinema or seeing bands. Today is different though. My parents have given me money for a new phone and I’m going to choose one now. I’m quite excited! Unit 8 Track 16 Everybody knows that / social media can be very addictive. / Personally, / I switch off my phone at night. / Therefore, / I don’t suffer from any illnesses / and I’m not stressed out. Track 17 ONE My dad used to get really bad headaches. He tried taking aspirins but they didn’t work. The headaches were worst in the mornings when he woke up. Mum was really worried but the doctor couldn’t find anything seriously wrong with him. In the end, it was his dentist who had an idea. My dad’s teeth aren’t straight and this causes a problem with his jaw. The dentist suggested holding a pencil between his teeth. Not biting it hard, just holding it there. He had fewer headaches but, of course, he couldn’t hold the pencil in his mouth at night. Now that he knew what the problem was, he went back to the dentist who made him a plastic shield for his teeth. He wears it at night and now he doesn’t get headaches at all. TWO A: B: A: B: A: B: A: B: A: B: THREE A: B: A: B: A: I’m really excited about the school trip to France, aren’t you? No, I’m not. I hate ferries. I get seasick. Really? Do you feel sick now? No, I’m fine on buses. I don’t feel sick in planes or cars either. Just on boats. I feel sick before we even leave the port. Have you tried taking tablets? Yes, but they never work. So, what are you going to do? We’ll be at Dover soon. Well, I looked on the Internet and I read about a cure. That’s why I’ve got these lemons. It said that, as soon as I feel sick, I should start sucking the lemon. Lemons eh? I hope it works. It’s a shame you can’t eat something else. Well, it says olives work too but I hate olives. They make me feel worse than travelling on a boat! (coughing) Wow! That’s a bad cough. I know. I feel OK but I can’t stop coughing. I’ve got a ticket for the theatre tonight but I don’t think I’ll go. I’ll feel too embarrassed. How long have you had it? Well, I had a cold all last week, starting last Sunday. I was sneezing all week. Then, on © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1) TESTS AUDIOSCRIPT B: A: B: A: B: A: Thursday I think it was, the sneezing stopped and I started coughing. I’ve been taking cough medicine for the last two days but it doesn’t do any good. Try this. Chocolate? Dark chocolate. Eat a small piece every half an hour. But why? Chocolate can’t stop a cough. According to a website I read, it can. It’s got something called Theobromine in it. Milk chocolate doesn’t have it.Here. Take the whole bar and enjoy the theatre. Thanks. I’ll let you know if it works. Teacher: Robbie: Teacher: Robbie: Teacher: Robbie: FOUR Sam: END-OF-YEAR TEST Track 18 ONE Oh, hi, it’s Marty here. Listen, I’ve got the tickets, like I said. Umm, the match starts at 3.00, so I thought we could meet up at half past one. That should be enough time, don’t you think? So, do you want to come round here, or shall I come to yours? OK, well, let me know. Oh, and, the tickets were £20… TWO And now, sport. There was a surprise win this afternoon for Worcester City who defeated Westminster Rovers three–nil. All the action came in the second half, when Worcester’s Andy Norris scored all three goals, an awesome hat trick, making him not only the man of the match but the man of the season. THREE Teacher: Robbie: Teacher: Robbie: What are your thoughts, Robbie? I’d like to try for medical school. That sounds an excellent plan. Have you any experience of working in a hospital? Yes, I’ve done some voluntary work. Josie: Sam: Josie: Sam: Josie: That’s good. Your mother’s a doctor, isn’t she? Yes, but she doesn’t want me to do it. She says it’s a hard life. Oh, well I’m sure she’s right, but, well… what does your father say? He says it’s my decision. I see. Well, you need to discuss it further with your parents of course. I can advise you on courses if you do decide to go on with it. Thank you. How are you doing with the exams so far, Josie? Oh, hi Sam. Not great, to be honest. Well, thought the Maths was tough today. I couldn’t even understand the last question. I know! I thought it was hard too. But it wasn’t as bad as Geography was, yesterday. It was a nightmare. Oh, I didn’t mind that so much. I was lucky with the questions, for a change. Hmm, well, I think I’ve done OK with everything else, at least I hope so. It’ll all be over soon anyway. True. Hold that thought. FIVE If you’d like to follow me through here, now … OK, now we are standing in the actual room where the young William Shakespeare had his lessons. In this very room, he and about forty other boys would study Latin, Greek and Mathematics. Every term they performed plays in the original Greek and Latin. This is the place where it all started, and it is still used as a classroom, about 450 years after Shakespeare was a pupil here. So, ladies and gentleman, have a good look round and then, when you’re ready, our next stop is the house where he was born... © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1) TESTS AUDIOSCRIPT Track 19 Ella: Tom: Ella: Tom: Ella: Tom: Ella: Tom: Ella: Tom: Ella: Tom: Ella: Hey Tom. Are you still working? It’s late! Hey Ella. I’m fine. I just want to finish reading through these notes. Why don’t you take a break, at least? I don’t have time. I’ve got to revise my Physics. The exam’s next week. I know, I’m doing it too, remember? But honestly, you should relax, or you’ll make yourself ill. It’s easy for you to say, you don’t have to do any work. You know it all already. You got top marks in the last test we had. Well, maybe I did, but I don’t know why you think I know everything, it certainly isn’t true. I worked hard for that test, that’s all. Well, there you go. I have to work hard now. Yes, I know. But I think you’re doing too much. Look, why don’t we go and play basketball tomorrow, like we did last week. I enjoyed that. So did I, but I’m not in the mood, not till after the exams. But you know, you’re right, I do need a break I suppose. I think I’ll go and watch Win A Million. You know, the quiz show. It’s on in a minute I think. It’s my favourite programme. Oh no, is it really? I hate it. Actually I can’t stand anything like that. Oh well, I’m going to watch it, anyway. Bye then. OK, bye Tom. See you. © Pearson 2020 PHOTOCOPIABLE Focus 2 SECOND EDITION (A2+/B1)
