According to the article they are very important and, because of this, it is likely that any strike action could have a damaging effect on the economy. Government will want to avoid this. However, it will also depend on the cost of improving working conditions and whether employers can afford this. Some idea of the strength of the union because of the type of employee it represents and their importance to the economy, but balanced against the cost of meeting the union’s demands.
