Why Multiculturalism is Necessary Have you ever wondered why people of certain countries can’t accept other cultures? Multiculturalism is necessary for our society to function properly. In its absence, we would have more discrimination, lack of diversity among communities, and would help value the culture of other ethnic groups. Multiculturalism is necessary for our society because without it, we would have more discrimination. “Surveys have routinely found harder attitudes towards Muslims than ethnic diversity more generally across a number of measures. If these types of discrimination are to be addressed, they must be understood in this more complex picture, where ideas and perceptions of ‘race’, ethnicity, culture and religion are at work. It is here that an understanding rooted in multiculturalism becomes important.” Muslims were found to have harsher attitudes against, and multiculturalism would help stop this idea because everyone would be more familiar with other cultures, which would lower stereotyping and or discrimination. Multiculturalism is necessary for our society because we would lack diversity without it. “Another study, conducted by Project Equality, found that companies that rated low on equal opportunity issues earned 7.9 percent profit, while those who rated highest with more equal opportunities resulted in 18.3 percent profit (Lauber, 2011). These numbers show that diversity and multiculturalism certainly is not a fad, but a way of doing business that better serves customers and results in higher profits.” This shows that not only is multiculturalism good for increasing diversity, it is good for increasing profits within businesses. Another reason why multiculturalism is necessary for our society is because it would help value the culture of ethnic groups. “Multiculturalism might entail the granting of rights (individual or collective) on the grounds of the value cultures have for individuals, or even society as a whole. A multicultural state then might be one in which different forms of recognition are granted to cultural groups to secure the valuable goods cultural membership provides equally and avoid unfairly privileging dominant groups.” This shows why multiculturalism is needed because it includes everyone of every ethnicity. Countries should start incorporating multiculturalism into their society. It lowers rate of discrimination, improves diversity within communities, and helps value the culture of other ethnic groups. If multiculturalism was in society, the lives of many people would improve drastically, for people of all ethnic groups.
