Name(s) ______________________________________________________________ Skittles Lab! An Introduction to CER Lab Rubric - 30 points total (This is what I use to grade labs!) Category Procedures and Data Available Points All procedures are followed and data is complete. (6 points) CER CER is complete, clear, logical, and relevant. (9 points) Analysis Questions Cleanup Data is mostly complete, with a couple of blanks or missing information. (4 points) Data is incomplete. 1 section of CER is incomplete OR CER is complete but lacks clarity or logic. (6 points) 2 sections of CER are incomplete OR CER is not clear, logical, or relevant. (3 points) Data is blank. (2 points) (0 points) CER is blank or is not taken seriously. (0 points) Two questions at random will be graded for accuracy on each lab. The other analysis questions will be graded for completion. (10 points max.) 5 points will be given to GROUPS who fully follow the cleaning checklist at the end of labs. Zero points are given for incomplete checklists. (5 points max.) Introduction: In this lab activity, you will follow the steps of the scientific method to discover how many candies of one color are in a sample of Skittles. This will allow you to record data and then create graphs to help draw conclusions; the same way scientists do in the lab. DO NOT touch the candies until you are supposed to. Do not eat any of the candies until after the lab. :) Question for CER: Which color of Skittle appears most frequently in a sample of Skittles? Materials: ● A sample of Skittles ● Pencil ● Paper towel ● Scientific calculator (NOT your phone!) Procedure: 1. We already stated the problem in our Question for CER. Let’s move to step 2! 2. Before you get the Skittles, let’s perform research. (hint - gather information. Since we will most likely not find information on Skittles in the library, we should look for people who have experience with these colored candies. Look around you and you will find some experts - you may in fact be an expert yourself!) What are all the different colors of regular Skittles? _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ 3. Look back to the Question for CER and make a hypothesis based on the question and based on your research. Write your hypothesis below. _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ 4. Set up and perform the experiment. Investigate! Come grab a sample of Skittles from the front lab table. NO EATING (yet)!!! Sort the candies by color on your paper towel. 5. Record data and analyze your results. ○ Write the color of the candies in the first column of the table. ○ Count how many candies there are per color. Record the results in the frequency column of the data table. ○ Add the numbers in the frequency column, from the top line to the bottom. Write the total number of Skittles on the bottom of the frequency column where it says “Total”. ○ Determine the percentage that each candy color is of the entire bag and record it in the percentage column of the data table. Your percentages should add up to be 100%. USE THE EQUATION BELOW. Percentage = # 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑟 𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 # 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑏𝑎𝑔 𝑥 100 Data table: Color Frequency (how many) Total: Percentage 100% 6. Write a conclusion. We will do this using CER! CER CLAIM Your statement to answer the question. EVIDENCE Data from the lab to support your claim. REASONING Why and how your evidence supports your claim? Analysis Questions 1. Look back to your hypothesis. How did your results compare with your hypothesis? (was your hypothesis correct? If not, why?) _______________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Find 3 groups to compare your results to. Write down which color they found occurred most frequently in their sample. Is it the same or different than yours? Group Member Names Their most frequent color Same or different than yours? LAB CLEANUP CHECKLIST ★ Please complete ALL checklist items below. When you are done, please ask me to check your lab station and give you a stamp so you can get full credit for lab cleanup. No stamp = no credit Clean up Skittles (you can throw them away or eat them!) Throw away paper towels Clean the table with spray and paper towels FOR ABSENT STUDENTS ONLY - (If you weren’t absent, you can do this for 1 extra credit point on this lab) Please check Canvas for the lab video to get data for your lab. Complete your lab as you watch the video. Since you were absent, you won’t need to do the lab cleanup, so instead to get those points, please answer the following questions to receive all points: 1. Find the volume of liquid in each graduated cylinder in milliliters. (2 pts) 2. Find the length of each bar in centimeters. (The big numbers are centimeters on these rulers). (1 pt) 3.
