UNIT IV: MULTIMEDIA FORMS OF THE 20th AND 21st CENTURIES LESSON II: BALLET Objectives: a. Know what Ballet is b. Describe how an idea or story is presented in a live performance or video. Introduction When someone hears the word “ballet” he or she thinks of the theatrical presentation of the artistic dance form with formal technique, gestures and movements of grace and precision. However, in this lesson, ballet refers primarily to the music form. The word ballet came from the French word ballette. The French word originated from the Italian word balleto, which means to dance. The music form ballet developed from a simple compliment of the dance to a more particular composition with equal importance. The medium of dance and ballet to interpret novels, folktales, and stories provides visual excitement as the characters come alive not in spoken dialogue but in body movements. Much of the communication is relayed in pantomime. It is a performance in which a story is told without words by using body movements and facial expressions. The lack of spoken words or sung lyrics is more than made up for by the creative steps and arm gestures of the dancers. The performance is further enhanced by colorful costumes, elaborates sets, visually suggestive music, and synchronized choreography. Together, the dance or ballet production makes for a complete drama by itself without a single word being spoken. In a ballet company, a male ballet dancer is called danseur, and a female ballet dancer is called a ballerina or danseuse. Prima ballerina is the lead female dancer and premier danseur is the lead female dancer.
