Urmanita CHAPTER I Writing a Research Proposal Proposed Title: Analysis of Frequent Twitter Activity of the Students of Quezon City Science High School During the Pandemic Key Terms: Social Media, Twitter, Covid 19, Quarantine, Psyche Definition of Terms: Social Media – form of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, and others Twitter - a microblogging system that allows you to send and receive short posts called tweets Covid 19 - a mild to severe respiratory illness that is caused by a coronavirus Quarantine - a state, period, or place of isolation in which people or animals that have arrived from elsewhere or been exposed to infectious or contagious disease are placed. Psyche - refers to all of the elements of the human mind, both conscious and unconscious. FREQUENT TWITTER ACTIVITY OF QCSHS STUDENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC Statement of the Problem General Problem: Does a significant change in the frequency of Twitter users in the Scientian community have an effect on their psyche? Specific Problems: 1. Was there a significant change in the frequency of Twitter users in the Scientian community? 2. Is there a correlation between self-isolation and the amount of time spent on the Twitter? 3. Can the amount of time spent using Twitter have an effect on a student’s psyche? 4. Does changing the time spent in Twitter allow students to better manage their time? Introduction The world is currently experiencing the pandemic of coronavirus, and its corresponding quarantine period prevented our typical social interactions with the extended stay-home period. Still, as it took away our perceived notion of normalcy, it introduced plenty of new practices – one of which is communicating through social media (CDC, 2020). Social media became essential because they played a crucial role in providing information regarding the Coronavirus (Srivastava, Shrivastava, Chhabra, Naqvi, & Sahu, 2020). With the Philippines as one of the most active countries in social media, times spent online averaging in the 9 to 10-hour range (Gonzales, 2020), it’s no surprise that this average will continue to rise with the quarantine. Social media has made the world a more connected place. The sharing of information has never been more convenient. It helps in being more updated with the current events, and contributes to building communities (Akram, 2017). Social media can also be a key communication channel in situations of crises, such as natural disasters, and in this time’s case, a pandemic (Carmichael, Takahashi, & Tandoc, 2015). Moreover, many use it for numerous noble causes like charities and contemporary activism, with the intent to incite social change (LaRose & Velasquez, 2015). The researchers chose Twitter because social media such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Flickr, and others have increased and have delivered astronomical numbers of users in less than ten years (Hendricks & Noor Al-Deen eds., 2012). This growing use of social media is in the process of changing how news is produced, disseminated, and discussed (Nielsen & Schrøder, 2014). In addition, there's an increase in the use of Twitter as a source of real-time information and a place for debate in news, politics, business, and entertainment (Weller, Bruns, Burgess, Mahrt, & Puschmann eds., 2014). This study aims to examine the relationship between the presence of a quarantine period and the level of social media activity of Scientians. Furthermore, the researchers will analyze the case using relevant theoretical concepts and will recommend a course of action for the study. This study could explain the connection between self-isolation and the amount of time we spend on the internet. Also, observations and findings concluded could help in our time management skills, especially when using the internet for an extended period. The time spent on the internet will help future researchers examine the ongoing evolution of emerging technology better. Moreover, other researchers could also use this study's results to advance this analysis's primary objective. FREQUENT TWITTER ACTIVITY OF QCSHS STUDENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC Background of the Study Although social media has numerous advantages, especially during this time, several studies have stated that social networking sites (SNS) like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. have an effect on the social esteem of students, and have been a related to signs and symptoms of depression (Pantic, 2014). Addiction is also a concern in social media because of its mass appeal and numerous mediums for it (Griffiths & Kuss, 2011). Some experts also associate social media with multiple risks such as privacy concerns, identity theft, different forms of harassment, cyberbullying, etc. (Ramingwong & Ramingwong, 2016) With the preface of the topic presented, the researchers will analyze the frequency of social media use in the Scientian community during the quarantine. The study will be conducted via structured surveys because it would be the most convenient form of collecting and analyzing our study data. The researchers believe that this study would help us understand the effects of having too much time for ourselves, especially in quarantine. Learning the relationship between the two would significantly help our time management skills and our overall productivity throughout the day (Gutiérrez-Martínez, Luna-Reyes, & Picazo-Vela, 2012). This study investigates the relationship between the quarantine period's existence and the frequency of social media activity of Scientians. Furthermore, the researchers will analyze the case using relevant theoretical concepts and will recommend a course of action for the study. This study would help understand the correlation of self-isolation and the amount of time spent on the internet. Insights and results concluded could help in managing time, especially when using the internet for too long. Additionally, other researchers may also use the researchers' conclusions to further the study's primary purpose. CHAPTER II Review of Related Literature Foreign Related Literature and Studies According to Gunther Eysenbach (2011), conceptualized social impact pertaining to the use of social media, mainly Twitter, shows effective spread and dissemination of peer-reviewed articles (Eysenbach, 2011). A study conducted by researchers Alaa Abd-Alrazaq, Dari Alhuwail, Mowafa House, and Mounir Hamdi Zubair Shah (2020) analyzes the surge of public health crisis , response activities on Twitter (Abd-Alrazaq, Alhuwail, Househ, Hamdi, & Shah, 2020). Social media sites are regarded as valuable and effective tools for promoting proper health practices and awareness, and increasing health literacy among the public (Li & Liu, 2020). However, excess exposure to social media disasters can lead to negative effects, which can, in turn, contribute to mental health problems (Zhou & Zhou, 2020). A study examined the potential link between the use of social media and the rising number of people that suffer from depression and secondary trauma during the peak of the pandemic (Zhong, Huang, & Liu, 2020). In some studies, parents reported that they and their children (especially adolescents between 13 and 18 years of age) have increased the use of technology and social media since the beginning of social distancing. In addition, it also showed that parents and children with higher levels of anxiety (as reported by parents) were more likely to increase their use of technology and to use social media and phones to connect (Drouin, McDaniel, Pater, & Toscos, 2020). (Gao, et al., 2020). Quarantine has prevented our typical social interactions with the extended period of stay at home. Still, when it eliminated the supposed notion of normalcy, it implemented a variety of new behaviors – one of which is to connect through social media (CDC, 2020). Communicating through social media became an essential because social media platforms played a crucial role in providing information regarding the Coronavirus (Srivastava, Shrivastava, Chhabra, Naqvi, & Sahu, 2020). Online social networks are now a popular way for users to connect, communicate, and share content (Mislove, Lehmann, Ahn, Onnela, & Rosenquist, 2011). Social media may also be a main medium of information in crisis situations, such as natural disasters and in our current case, a pandemic (Carmichael, Takahashi, & Tandoc, 2015). FREQUENT TWITTER ACTIVITY OF QCSHS STUDENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC Local Related Literature and Studies The Philippines is one of the most active countries in social media, with an average of 9 to 10 hours spent online (Gonzales, 2020). With this and the current situation of the COVID-19 in the Philippines in context, Filipinos have more time dedicated to using social media (citation needed). Twitter, in specific, have been observed as a channel of sharing concern, thoughts, etc. during times of crises (David, Ong, & Legara, 2016). Tweets regarding requests for prayer and rescue were the most likely to be retweeted (Boaz, Ybañez, De Leon, & Estuar, 2013). Some studies show that there are more students who tweet several times whenever there is a typhoon but the students are more active on twitter by just checking on the latest updates (Paladin, Ramos, & Capulong-Reyes, 2015). The sentiment and effects of the coronavirus and the lockdown correlates with each other that twitter users are looking for possible solutions in order to survive (Pastor, 2020). Results of some studies showed that different stakeholders used social media mostly for dissemination of second-hand information, in coordinating relief efforts, and in memorializing those affected (Carmichael, Takahashi, & Tandoc, 2015).
