Why? Verbal communication is an essential soft skill to have in life in any situation. Clear communication creates a productive environment. Impact Communication in a business employees is crucial because creates a healthy and collaborative environment. It allows employees to know what each customer has ordered, and it also allows employees to communicate whether they need assistance or not. Verbal communication is a basic essential soft skill needed in every career. Scenarios Scenario #1 Scenario #2 While working at a coffee shop, there were will times when it will be busy. Verbal communication is important so that team members can support each other to create a seamless production line. Verbal communication is also important to let your manager know of any updates. These updates might include time off requests or changes to one’s schedule. Communication with your manager is important so he can adjust the schedule to support business needs. Adaptability Definition The ability to adjust to new situations or circumstances. Why? Adaptability is an important skill to have because businesses change day to day. Impact This soft skill is beneficial because although Although businesses tend to see a trend, an unexpected situation can happen at any time. Some examples of unexpected situations include: a call out, technological issues, a refrigerator not working, etc. In these situations, employees must possess the ability to be flexible and to be able to adapt to these certain situations. Scenarios Scenario #1 Scenario #2 Adapability is an essential skill to have because businesses are usually very dynamic. It is important for someone who works at a coffee shop to be flexible and adaptable because people might call out. Although there are fewer people working, we still have a business to run. In a coffee shop, there might be times when a machine is not working. If an espresso machine stops working, we might have to be flexible and work with only one. Another solution would also be to serve brewed coffee only. Decision Making Definition The ability to make important decisions that will best benefit the business. Why? This soft skill was chosen because we make decisions every day. Decision making is even more important in a business setting. Impact Decision making goes hand in hand with adaptability. If employees are managing the store while I am not working, they may need to make important business decisions. These decisions maybe include how much product to order or something as simple as sending a person on their break right now or later. Scenarios Scenario #1 Scenario #2 Decisions are made almost every minute and in businesses, important business decisions are made that might impact the store. One example is ordering product. When ordering product, it is important to make sure not to order too much and too little. Deciding on what tasks to complete in a coffee shop at a certain time is another example of why decision making is an important soft skill to have. Should we restock the front so we’re ready for another rush or do some dishes? Respectfulness Definition Being courteous and mindful of another people’s feelings. Why? Respect for one another is a must. It is a basic essential skill that not only applies to my desired career, but in life in general. Impact Being respectful to one another creates a healthy and positive work environment. No one wants to work in an environment whether the employees don’t show respect to one another. Scenarios Scenario #1 Scenario #2 It is always important to be respectful. Period. This is especially important for the employees to be respectful to the customers. Customers are what keep our business running, so they are an important asset to any coffee shop. Respect is important for customers, but also important for the employees as well. It is important to be respectful to one another because it creates a healthy work culture for the team. Collaboration Defintion The act of working with someone or a group to produce something. Why? In a coffee shop, a lot of the time you are not working alone. Most of the time, you may be working with another person, and this is when teamwork is important. Impact While working in a coffee shop, it is important to be able to work well with your employees. The ability to collaborate with your team is especially crucial during rushes because it creates efficiency, and it allows you to produce more in a shorter amount of time. Scenarios Scenario #1 Scenario #2 While working in a coffee shop and especially during rushes, teamwork is important to be efficient. Is important to be able to work together to provide the best possible service for customers. Collabaration is important because allows for efficiency. When employees work together as a team, they are able to do more in a shorter amount of time. CO FF EE Conclusion By completing the soft skills project, it allowed for me to analyze which soft skills were going to be the most important in my future career. It also allowed for me to think of different scenarios in which the soft skills would be useful.
