Name ____________________________________________________ Date_______________________________ Period____________________________ Scientific Method: Oreo Lab The Scientific Method can be broken down into the following parts: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. State the problem. Form a Hypothesis. Experiment! Record and analyze data. Communicate the results. Introduction In this activity, you will follow the steps of the scientific method to discover if double stuffed Oreos are really double stuffed. It will show you how scientists record data on charts, make graphs, and draw conclusions. Do not eat the Oreos until you are permitted, because it will affect your results. Objectives 1. Name and describe the steps of the scientific method. 2. Follow the steps of the scientific method to solve a problem. 3. Record data in a table. 4. Construct a graph that shows the results of the investigation. 5. Write a conclusion of your results. Materials 1. 3 double stuffed Oreo per student 2. 3 regular stuffed Oreo per student 3. Balance 4. Graph Paper for each student Procedure 1. Gather Materials 2. Carefully twist of one side of the cookie from both Oreos 3. Measure the mass of the cookie with no filling on it for both cookies using the balance. Record in the data table using grams. 4. Measure the mass of each cookie with the filling on it using the balance. Record in data table. 5. Calculate the mass of stuff by subtracting the mass from the cookie +stuff mass. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 three times. 7. Using the data table, graph your results as a bar graph. 8. Write your conclusion. Steps of the Scientific Method 1. State the problem: (Hint – What are you trying to figure out?) _____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. Form a Hypothesis: _________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. Experiment: Twist off one side of the cookie from both Oreos and measure. No eating yet! 4. Record and analyze data: a. Complete steps 2-5 of the Procedure. Trials of the Cookie Experiment Type of Cookie Trial Regular 1 Regular 2 Regular 3 Double Stuffed 1 Double Stuffed 2 Double Stuffed 3 Mass of Cookie Mass of Cookie + stuff b. Make a graph of your results on graph paper. Calculated Mass of stuff 5. Communicate your results. On the lines below, form a paragraph that answers the problem you looked to solve in the Oreo Lab. Your paragraph should include: • An answer to the question addressed in #1. • What were your results? • How your actual results compare with your hypothesis? • What did you learn? • What were possible sources of error?
