Discuss the principles of First Aid. DEFINITION First Aid is the initial assistance or treatment given to a person who is injured or ill. OR The response that happens before regular medical aid can be obtained. The purpose of First Aid is to minimise injury and future disability. Roles and Qualities of a good First Aider ROLES Assess the situation quickly and calmly Check for: safety whether you or the casualty are in any danger. Is it safe to approach. Scene: find out what caused the accident or situation and how many causalities there are. Situation: find out what happened ,how many people are involved and how old they are, Protect yourself and them from any danger. Always protect yourself first never put yourself at risk Only move them if leaving them would cause more harm. Prevent infection between you and them. Comfort and reassure. Assess the casualty and give first aid treatment. Arrange for help if needed. Qualities Quick and prompt Able to notice or recognise someone who need or requires immediate assistance. Calm and in command Be able to maintain your cool, be confident and stay calm. Have the ability to work under pressure. Communication expert Ability to communicate with victims in volatile situations. Able to obtain information from passer-by and co-workers. Must be straight forward and explicit. Be able to give the right information when handing over casualty to the other medical personnel. Leadership ability Must be able to command in a volatile situation Be able to communicate with other responders as well. Must be a good team player. Understanding your limits Recognise your limitations , rather than doing it yourself ask for assistance. Priorities of a good first aider Priority 1 Preserve life – stop the casualty from dying keep alive. Priority 2 Prevent further worsening - stop the casualty from getting worse by treating their injuries , also managing the incidence to prevent worsening. Priority 3 Try to help the casualty feel better by talking to them and supporting them emotionally. Principles of First Aid Keep calm in first aid situation Avoid infection Act as a first aider Ensure the comfort of the person Provide psychosocial first aid Pay attention to emotional reactions after the event.
