GURU SWEETS
No visit to Mysore is complete without tasting the city’s most popular
sweetmeat, the Mysore Pak! This concoction, born in the royal palaces
of Mysore, takes only 4 ingredients to make, namely, gram flour, sugar,
turmeric, and plenty of ghee!
The first Mysore Pak was made by the great grandfather of Natarajan and
Kumar who are the current owners of Guru Sweet Mart. This sweet shop is
run by the fifth generation of the family descended from Kakkasura Madappa,
the chef at the royal palace, widely regarded as the inventor of the Mysore Pak.
The sweet dish, which has become the city’s signature dish, not only
relished by thespians like the late Dr Rajkumar, Rajnikanth, the late
Shivaji Ganeshan and politicians like Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
Jayalalithaa and scores of foreigners too.
▪
According to Kumar, one of the partners of Guru
Sweets, the Mysore Pak was first prepared by his great
grandfather Kakasura Madappa. According to him this
sweet was prepared when Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV was
the king of the erstwhile Mysore. Kakasura Madappa
was the chief chef of the Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and
was known for preparing the sweets.
▪
Once he prepared a special sweet by using
the ghee, gram flour and sugar. Kakasura Madappa didn’t
name the sweet he had prepared. It was Krishnaraja
Wadiyar IV who named it as the Royal Sweet Mysore Pak.
Like everything else, the history of Mysore Pak also
involves an accidental discovery.

Mahesh Prasad Veg
Restaurant
Although only a couple of decades old, it seems like Mahesh Prasad
has been a part of Mysore's culinary scene forever. Hugely popular
with locals for its all day vegetarian offerings, and also for its cosy,
homely setting that conveys to diners the comforting, gold ole vibes of
yesteryear.
Some of the popular dishes are wholesome vegetarian thali, that finds
its culinary roots in South Canara albeit in a flavour tone that is suited
to local preferences, a delicious bonda soup, a dish that doesn’t get
nearly the recognition it deserves, and some more like Chandrahara
Basundi
The Bisi Bele Bath is one dish that deserves this spotlight, not just at
the Conrad. 'Bele' refers to lentil and this flavourful dish combines rice,
lentils and a medley of fragrant spices that is usually drenched in
ghee. Many restaurants in Bengaluru and iconic establishments like
Mahesh Prasad in Mysuru top the bisi bele bath with boondi

GAYATHRI TIFFINS
Gayathri Tiffin Room, widely known as GTR in the city of Mysuru, is a
destination loved for its tiffin items, especially a variety of dosas! This
over half a century old establishment serves up tongue-tickling dosa,
the favourite being the Gayatri Masala Dosa here, not the typical
Mysore Masala with red chutney, but a thick roast with a soft
underbelly.
GTR masala dosa :- a delightful crunchy dosa with a soft interior. has a nice
buttery flavour. the potatoes are soft, creamy and have a generous amount of
onion and fresh coriander for that sprightly freshness. the dosa itself is quite
thick. served with a fresh spicy chutney.
▪
idli :- the idli has a grainy texture and a mildly vegetal flavour that suggests it
may have been steamed in a leaf. the spicy chutney has the fresh flavour of
coconut and body from the ground lentils. the sambar has a gentle sweetness
typical of a south canara sambar.
▪
Many other dishes like green dosa, open butter masala dosa, Uppitu, kesari bath
etc…
