GROOMING AND APPEARANCE Personal grooming and body positivity are important factors in how we see ourselves and others. Taking care of our appearance not only promotes self-esteem but also demonstrates how much we appreciate ourselves. In this lesson, we will look at the influence of personal grooming on self-esteem and the notion of body positivity in order to build a positive self-image. Learning Outcomes: 1. Define grooming and appearance. 2. Discuss the four types of personal grooming and its sample practices. 3. Discuss the relationship between personal grooming and self-confidence. DEFINITION Appearance is the way a person or thing looks or seems to other people. While, grooming is the act of improving and caring for your own body and appearances. These four different types of personal grooming help us understand why personal grooming is important for everyone: 1) 2) 3) 4) Personal Hygiene Dental Care Hair Care Nail Care PERSONAL HYGIENE “Take care of your body, its the only place you have to live.” - Jim Rohn It is important to establish a daily routine for hygiene, including bathing, oral care, and skincare. Cleanliness keeps germs, infectious bacteria, and viruses at bay. In addition, personal hygiene helps in keeping you clean, which raises your confidence and promotes personal interactions (Barik, 2022). Here are some recommendations for maintaining good personal hygiene: 1. Wash your hands with soap and water on a regular basis. 2. Bathing removes dead skin cells and dirt. 3. Make it a habit to clean your teeth twice a day. 4. Floss your teeth once a day to maintain good dental hygiene. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Cleaning your tongue once or twice a day may aid in the reduction of foul breath. Cleaning and cutting your nails lowers your risk of getting an infection. Always wear clean clothes; unclean garments might cause skin discomfort. Wear a face mask to protect yourself during Covid-19. A good night's sleep is important for good health. Visit the doctor on a regular basis for regular health checks before it becomes a medical problem. DENTAL CARE “A genuine smile comes from the heart, but a healthy smile needs good dental care.” - Wayne Chirisa Dental care is the act of keeping your teeth and other oral structures free of decay and infection. Brushing and flossing on a regular basis are part of this. In order to maintain proper oral hygiene, it is also recommended that you see a dentist at least twice a year for a dental checkup and cleaning (Barik, 2022). Here are some personal grooming recommendations to help you attain and maintain proper oral hygiene in order to have healthy teeth and fresh breath: 1. Avoid sugary snacks and eat wholesome dishes. 2. Tobacco products should be avoided at all costs. 3. Rinse your mouth with water or consume sugarless gum after meals. 4. Brush your teeth twice a day, ideally after each meal. 5. Consider using a night guard if you have a habit of grinding your teeth while sleeping. HAIR CARE “Invest in your hair, its the crown you never take off.” Experts promote haircare as one of the most important personal maintenance measures. It is necessary not only for our physical beauty, but also for our general health. Having healthy hair helps us to appear our best while also protecting our hair and scalp's health (Barik, 2022). Here are some tips to keep your hair healthy and presentable: 1. Hair should be kept clean, trimmed and neatly combed or arranged. 2. Wash your hair at least once a day. 3. Comb or brush your hair at least 100 strokes a day 4. Male students sporting long hair should tie, braid or bale their hair to appear neat and groomed especially when in school premises. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER NAIL CARE “Your hands and feet never take a day off so take care of them.” - Tammy Taylor Well-kept nails contribute to a pleasant impression. Broken, bitten, unclean, or hangnail nails will detract from an image. We use our hands every day, and they are one of the first things that others notice about us. Having good-looking nails may enhance your confidence throughout the day (Barik, 2022). Here are several ways to care for your nails (CDC, 2022): 1. Keep your nails short and trim them frequently. 2. Every time you wash your hands, scrub the underneath of your nails with soap and water (or a nail brush). 3. Before using any nail grooming instruments, make sure they are clean. 4. Avoid biting or chewing on your nails. 5. Cuticles serve as barriers to infection and should not be severed. 6. Never bite or rip a hangnail. Instead, use a clean, sterilized nail trimmer to cut it. The Influence of your Appearance and Grooming on You and Others (Shukla, 2021) 1. Your Outward Appearance Influences Your Confidence and Self-esteem. How you dress, groom, and conduct yourself influences how you feel and see yourself. Being well-groomed leads to a higher feeling of self-esteem, which influences how you seem to others. If you are untidy, you will appear unsure of yourself. This will have a negative influence on how others see you. Your energy will always attract your family and friends. 2. Your physical appearance influences your behavior. When you begin to be more conscious and thoughtful about your appearance and grooming, you set in motion a chain reaction of great life traits that will accumulate in other areas. If you feel better about your appearance, you will be less likely to do actions that would hinder your development. You will find that you begin to work on improving other aspects of your life that will collectively enhance your look, such as your nutrition, workout regimen, sleep pattern, and so on. 3. Your physical appearance improves people's perceptions of you. Whatever your behavior, attitude, or character, the first thing people notice about you is your look. It is notable to know how your looks and grooming affect how others connect to and interact with you. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER ACTIVITY # 1 MY PERSONAL HYGIENE CHART Instructions: Below is a chart of personal hygiene you could do for a week. Use this chart as a guide for the daily practices you do for improving and caring for your own appearance and yourself! CONCLUSION Personal hygiene and body positivity are two components of cultivating a good self-image that are inextricably linked. Students may boost their self-esteem and establish stronger connections with themselves and others by recognizing the importance of personal grooming and adopting body positivity. Encourage students to practice self-care and body positivity as they progress so they could better contribute to a more caring and tolerant society. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Respecting Me: Building a Foundation for Self-Respect INTRODUCTION Self-respect is the basis of a positive self-image and is necessary for personal development and well-being. It entails recognizing and appreciating one's own value, as well as treating oneself with love and dignity. In this lesson, we will look at the notion of self-respect and its importance in all facets of life. We will also talk about establishing boundaries, accepting oneself, and developing the courage to deal with criticism and failure constructively. Learning Outcomes: 1. Understanding the concept of self-respect and its importance in personal growth. 2. Identifying personal boundaries and communicating them effectively. 3. Encouraging students to embrace their unique qualities and talents. DEFINITION “Only by self-respect will you compel others to respect you.” - Fyodor Dostoyevsky Defining Self-Respect Self-respect is defined as loving and caring for oneself. It's the outcome of sticking to your principles and refusing to compromise. The more you engage in actions that are compatible with your ideas and values, the more fulfilled and confident you will feel. This will boost your overall sense of well-being. Respecting oneself also keeps you from comparing yourself and your life to the lives of others. This is especially relevant in today's digital age (Casabianca & Vogel, 2022). What is the opposite to Self-Respect? You may already know the answer, but disrespect is the polar opposite of self-respect. But how does this appear in practice? Here are some ways you may be disrespecting yourself: ● You may engage in negative self-talk (e.g., "I'm not good enough," "I can never do anything right," and so on). ● You may allow someone to cross your boundaries. ● You may find it difficult to say "no," which leads to you being taken advantage of. ● You may underestimate your abilities, accomplishments, and character. ● You may not make time for self-care. ● You may be preoccupied with what others think of you rather than what you think of yourself. ● You may disregard your wishes and necessities. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER “When you tolerate disrespectful people, you disrespect yourself.” - Wayne Gerard Trotman Setting Boundaries A person with healthy boundaries recognizes that setting clear expectations benefits them in two ways: it determines what conduct you will accept from others and what behavior others may anticipate from you. If you maintain appropriate boundaries, you may: ● Share personal information in an acceptable manner (not too much or too little) ● Know what your unique needs and desires are and how to convey them ● Respect your own viewpoints ● Accept when others say "no" There are five varieties of boundaries (Casabianca & Vogel, 2022): 1. Physical. This relates to your personal space, privacy, and body. You may be someone who enjoys public shows of love (hugs, kisses, and hand-holding), or you may prefer not to be touched in public. 2. Sexual. These are your feelings on intimacy. Sexual words and touches may make you feel uneasy. 3. Intellectual. These limits apply to your thoughts and beliefs. When someone ignores another person's thoughts and beliefs, intellectual boundaries are violated. 4. Emotional. This is about a person's emotions. You might not feel comfortable discussing everything with a friend or lover. You would rather share progressively over time. 5. Financial. As you can expect, this one is all about money. If you like to save money rather than spend it on contemporary clothing, you might not want to lend it to a buddy who does. To establish and create boundaries successfully, you must first understand why they are essential to you and how they will help your emotional well-being. You should also think about establishing limits early on. Setting limits and expectations from the start ensures that everyone understands where they stand and reduces emotions of pain, uncertainty, and anger. Allowing your boundaries to slip can cause confusion and foster new expectations and demands from others around you. That is why you should attempt to keep things consistent and steady. This reinforces your initial boundaries and values and ensures that those borders stay firmly defined (Pattemore, 2021). “Be yourself, everyone else is taken” - Oscar Wilde Embracing Your Individuality Acceptance is the key to embracing one's identity. Accepting not only our best aspects of ourselves, but also our least favorite aspects - and understanding that they all contribute to who we are. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Living with low vision might be difficult at times, but it is only one aspect of a complicated, one-of-a-kind individual. It provides you with a fresh perspective and tools that others may not have. In summary, we must balance the highs and lows in all facets of our lives (Allen, 2019). ACTIVITY # 2 CLASSROOM AFFIRMATIONS INSTRUCTIONS: List down your favorite positive affirmations and things you like about yourself. After that, the teacher will randomly call students to share their work to the class. CONCLUSION Self-respect and resilience are essential abilities for human development and well-being. Students may create a good self-image and foster healthy connections with themselves and others by setting boundaries, appreciating individuality, and taking criticism and failure with resilience and self-compassion. Encourage pupils to exercise self-awareness and self-care, allowing them to overcome obstacles and develop into confident and resilient individuals. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Dress Code Decoded: Your Style Game with Proper Dressing! INTRODUCTION In many academic and professional environments, a proper dress code or a set of guidelines on how to dress is usually prescribed. By following this, students present themselves as responsible and disciplined members of their community. In SPCF, there are prescribed school uniforms for male and female students that the student body must follow. Learning Outcomes: 1. Define Proper Dress Code. 2. Reiterate the Proper Dress Code for Male and Female Students of SCPF as per the student handbook. 3. Discuss why following the proper dress code of the school is important. 4. Identify the offenses and disciplinary measures related to dress code. 5. Encourage students to follow the dress code prescribed by the school. 6. DEFINITION Male Students’ Dress Code SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER For male students enrolling in the System Plus College Foundation, the following guidelines must be observed: a. The prescribed school uniform for male students consist of black, dark blue, dark brown, or dark gray pants that are not tight-fitting; white polo shirt or polo barong or even a plain white shirt with collar and sleeves, and not see-through or knitted shirt, plain white undershirt, black or dark brown shoes (not rubber) and socks. b. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER We Slay Wednesdays! Effective since November 23, 2022, Fashion Day was created to allow students more freedom to dress. Below are the guidelines for the Fashion day taken directly from a letter to all departments signed by Executive Vice President Lean Happie Bustamante: 1. Students are allowed to enter the campus wearing an outfit of their choice provided that they comply with the guidelines henceforth. ● No item of clothing that may offer perception, reference, design, etc., of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, foul language, sex or sexual topics, or topics that may be offensive or inappropriate to others. ● Tops: Mesh, see-through, ripped exposing too much skin are not allowed. ● Bottoms: Shorts and skirts exceeding 5 inches above the knee are not allowed. ● Hair: Hair color is allowed so long as it is washable. 2. Students with RLE and OJT/practicum are not included in the Fashion Day. 3. During laboratory classes, the prescribed uniform and PPE will be worn should the respective instructors require. 4. Students can still wear their respective school uniform if they prefer to during Fashion Day. Impact of Proper Dress Code Students are encouraged to follow the proper dress code for the reasons that follow: 1. First Impressions Dressing appropriately leaves a lasting first impression on others, influencing how one is perceived and often shaping initial judgments in personal and professional interactions. 2. Self-Confidence Properly adhering to the dress code boosts self-confidence, as individuals feel assured in their appearance and preparedness for any situation. 3. Respect and Recognition: Following a proper dress code reflects respect for the values and norms of a particular environment, leading to increased recognition and acceptance within the community. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Consequences of Not Following the Dress Code 1. Distraction The dress code is implemented so nobody stands out and catches too much attention. If a student, for example, is wearing a casual outfit while doing a presentation, it might affect how their teacher and peers perceive or listen to them. This kind of distraction can affect focus and evaluation. 2. Loss of Credibility The student may not be seen as responsible or respectful of the school and its guidelines anymore. 3. Disruption of the Classroom Environment A student who is not following the dress code may disrupt the formality and seriousness of the classroom and school. 4. Disciplinary Measures A student who does not follow the dress code may be given disciplinary measures by the administration, which may affect their academic and behavioral standing. Disciplinary Measures for Ignoring the SPCF Dress Code Not wearing the prescribed school uniform can result in a disciplinary action depending on the number of times the offense is made. 1st strike: Counseling 2nd strike: Reprimand 3rd Strike: Suspension for 5 class days 4th offense: Suspension for 5 class days and disciplinary probation ACTIVITY # 3 CONSEQUENCES CHARADES! INSTRUCTIONS: With the class divided into two teams, one student from each team will come forward and act out a consequence of not following the dress code given by the teacher. The opposing team will try to guess the consequence and if they fail, the chance is given to the other team. The team that guesses correctly gets a point. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER CONCLUSION A proper dress code is important in creating an effective learning environment. Following these guidelines shows responsibility, unity, and professionalism of the student. Dressing with the norms helps lessen distraction and lets everybody focus on their studies and work. Although it may seem like taking away freedom and creativity, the dress code actually encourages students to express their individuality through their actions and personality instead of just their clothes. Moreover, the dress code helps create an equal environment where economic status is less obvious, therefore balancing the students’ confidence. In conclusion, the school dress code is a tool to maintain a positive environment of respect, dignity, and professionalism. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER MISSION-VISION-PHILOSOPHY! INTRODUCTION Every ship needs a compass and every driver needs directions. Similarly, schools need a mission and vision philosophy to guide their actions and aspirations. Mission and vision statements help the institution have a successful journey of growth and excellence. Learning Outcomes: 1. Identify the mission and vision of SPCF. 2. Discuss why having mission and vision statements is important. 3. Discuss the role that the students have in actualizing the mission and vision of the school. DEFINITION The SPCF Vision “An institution delivering world-class education” The SPCF Mission “Systems College Plus Foundation provides holistic development to all stakeholders through excellence in instruction, research, and extension services.” ● ● ● Core Values Service - We serve the Filipino people delivering excellence in academic services and social volunteerism. Professionalism - We uphold professionalism through integrity and ethical responsibility. Competence - We personify service excellence with holistic growth and learning. How are the mission and vision philosophies different from each other? While the vision statement is broad and talks about long-term goals, the mission statement is more specific and talks about the practical principle that the school follows for its present and near-future decisions (Sabbott, 2015). What is your role as a student in actualizing the mission and vision of SPCF? As ambassadors of the school, students must embody the mission and vision of the school through their attitudes and actions. You must actively aim for excellence in your school work and practice the culture of accountability, responsibility, professionalism, servitude, and respect in your community. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER ACTIVITY # 4 ENVISIONING MISSIONS INSTRUCTIONS: Using any art material, create a poster on the vision and mission of SPCF. CONCLUSION The mission and vision philosophy of SPCF plays a very important role in directing the future of the school and its students. Both these statements should guide decisions and actions, and must be upheld by the administration, staff, and students. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER IDology: Responsible ID Handling INTRODUCTION An ID, short for identity or identification, is an important part of a safeguarded community or institution. In schools, our IDs are not just mere plastic cards with our names on them. They show our belongingness to our school. When we wear our ID, we represent SPCF wherever we go. Learning Outcomes: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Define ID and identify its uses. Discuss why it is important to take care of the school ID. Illustrate situations in which ID dishonorment can have consequences. Reiterate offenses and sanctions related to ID-wearing as per the student handbook. Encourage students to wear their IDs at all times and observe proper caring for their IDs. DEFINITION The SPCnian’s Pledge on Wearing of the School ID: “I will always wear my school/college ID properly within the school premises.” “I will not use another person’s ID, a not validated school/college ID, an unauthorized or illegally printed/copied/laminated/ ID, or lend my ID to anyone.” Uses of the ID 1. Security and Protection IDs safeguard members within school premises by making it easier to distinguish students and authorized personnel from outsiders who may pose potential threats to the school safety. 2. Quick Identification In instances where introduction consumes time or is not possible, IDs make it possible for one to identify another (i.e. a teacher calling a new student or a personnel identifying an unconscious student). 3. Access Control Facilities such as libraries and laboratories as well as documents can be accessed upon presentation of IDs. They ensure that only members of SPCF can make use of these provisions and thus improve maintenance and protect the school’s resources. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 4. Emergency Situations At times of emergency such as natural disasters or lockdowns, school IDs can help to account for the present individuals on campus. 5. Representation of the School IDs help foster a sense of pride and identity as being part of an institution. Wearing school IDs reminds us that we belong to the SPCF community and must therefore act with dignity at all times. 6. Accountability Culture Encouraging everyone to care for their school IDs teaches them to be mindful of their belongings and actions, and ultimately creates a culture of accountability and responsibility. How to take care of your ID! 1. 2. 3. 4. Wear your ID properly at all times on campus. Present your ID upon entry to school or other facilities, and whenever necessary. Never lend or reproduce your own ID or use someone else’s. Act with dignity and respect when wearing your ID on- and off-campus. Consequences of ID Dishonorment When you dishonor or ignore your responsibility of taking care of your ID, several consequences affect your wellbeing as well as the school’s. 1. Safety Risk Threats to the safety of people on campus may be made when an outsider gains entry using a borrowed ID. Places and materials in the school that require a trained personnel might also be abused and this can pose a risk to oneself and those nearby. 2. Violation of School Policies Not wearing the school ID or using/lending it to someone else are considered violations of school policies that may lead to disciplinary action and consequently affect the student’s standing. As per the student guidebook, there are two offenses listed regarding the school ID. 1. Light Offense: Not wearing the school ID Card. 1st strike: Counseling 2nd strike: Reprimand SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 3rd Strike: Suspension for 5 class days 2. Serious offense: Illegal entry into the school premises; Use of another students ID card or Registration Card in gaining access to the school campus, in borrowing books in the library or for any other purposes. 1st strike: Suspension 2nd strike: Exclusion 3. Abuse of School Resources School resources such as libraries, laboratories, and other facilities may be abused by outsiders. Similarly, the students themselves may fail to utilize these resources if they are not wearing their IDs. 4. Missed Attendance Classes & activities might be missed and attendance may not be recorded if the student is not wearing their ID. 5. Impact on Accountability Culture Dishonoring the ID might influence other students to follow the same road, destroying the culture of accountability and responsibility in the school. 6. Institutional Reputation Mishandling of the ID can reflect poorly on the school's reputation for maintaining a safe institution and ability to produce well-rounded individuals. As per the SPCF Student Manual: All students must secure identification cards from the Multimedia Department. Students must present Identification Cards when entering the school premises properly worn at all times. The student's ID must always be the basis for identifying a student when he transacts business with the school. In case of loss of the ID card, a student should execute an affidavit of loss and submit the same to the Office of the Student Affairs. Students pay an amount as fixed by the school to the Accounting Office and present the receipt to OSA and submit a 2 x 2 " colored picture. ACTIVITY # 5 ID DETECTIVES! INSTRUCTIONS: Create IDs using the template below, except, instead of your name, put a word or phrase that you feel is significant to you. It can be the name of a fandom you are part of, a favorite movie, a book character you have a crush on, your astrological sign, your pet name etc. One by one, SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER you will be asked to introduce yourself in front using your ID and the rest of the class will take a guess on how the word or phrase on your nametag is related to you. Explain afterwards. CONCLUSION School IDs serve several important purposes, both for the student and the institution. Take care of your school ID by following protocol and keeping the SPCnian pledge of wearing it at all times within school premises and refraining from its unauthorized use. Ultimately, honoring school IDs helps maintain order, security, and a positive learning environment. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Mindful Online Presence: Best Practices for Social Media Engagement INTRODUCTION Social media has become an essential element of modern life, bringing with it both benefits and difficulties. The objective of this lesson is for students to understand the influence of social media on mental health and self-esteem, to use social media responsibly, and to promote positivity and empathy online. Students will also understand the significance of keeping a positive digital presence and remaining safe from cyberbullying and online threats. DEFINITION The phrase "social media" refers to websites and programs that emphasize communication, community-based input, engagement, content sharing, and collaboration. People utilize social media to remain in touch with friends, family, and members of various communities. Businesses utilize social media to sell and promote their products, as well as to track client issues. Some examples of social media include Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Youtube, and Twitter. Moreover, most social media platforms stipulate that the minimum age to sign up is 13+. Keep the following in mind when engaging with others online (Dollarhide, 2023). 10 SOCIAL MEDIA ETIQUETTE 1. Use privacy settings to control who can see your posts, messages, and profile information. 2. Think before you post. Avoid sharing anything that could be embarrassing or harmful to yourself or others. 3. Don't engage in cyberbullying or online harassment. Treat others online as you would like to be treated in person. 4. Avoid sharing personal information. Don't share your full name, phone number, address and other personal information online. Monitor your digital footprint. Be mindful of what you post online, as it can have a lasting impact on your reputation and future opportunities. What Exactly is Cyberbullying? (UNICEF, n.d.) Cyberbullying is bullying that occurs via the use of digital technology. It may occur on social networking sites, chat systems, gaming platforms, and mobile phones. It is repetitive behavior intended to frighten, upset, or shame individuals who are targeted. Here are several examples: ● ● ● ● Fabricating lies about someone or sharing humiliating photographs or videos of them on social media Using messaging systems to send hateful, abusive, or threatening texts, photos, or videos Impersonating someone and delivering hurtful words to others on their behalf or through a phony account. Bullying in person and cyberbullying can frequently occur together. However, cyberbullying leaves a digital trail, which may be used as proof to help stop the abuse. Cyberbullying can have severe and long-lasting consequences. Because of the anonymity afforded by online contexts, people may say things that they would not say in person. Teens and children who are cyberbullied are at risk of developing emotional, behavioral, and mental health problems (Zitner, 2022). In addition, the more time people spend on Facebook and Instagram, the more they socially compare themselves with others. This social comparison has been associated with poorer self-esteem and increased social anxiety, among other factors. On the other hand, when times are tough, social media can be a tremendous tool for offering support, building communities, and motivating action. This is the reason why it is important to remember to take pauses, set boundaries, and consume carefully. Continue to speak out, share, and connect in ways that are beneficial for you (Zitner, 2022). . SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER ACTIVITY # 6 SOCIAL MEDIA POST INSTRUCTIONS: A lot of what we see on social media is negative. For today's lesson we are going to be creating a positive post. In the first box write your name and the date. In the large box create your post. In the bottom box you will include your text or additional messages. Topics that could be used are: Diversity, Acceptance, Positivity, Celebrating Differences, or anything to promote positivity. CONCLUSION When used wisely, social media can be a wonderful tool for connecting, learning, and spreading optimism. Students may create a safer and more positive online environment for themselves and others by recognizing the influence of social media on mental health and self-esteem, creating a positive digital footprint, preventing cyberbullying, and practicing empathy and compassion online. Encourage students to be careful of their social media usage and to make a concerted effort to share positivity and develop an online network of support. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER From Sunrise to Soul: Everyday Spirituality INTRODUCTION The goal of this module is to lead students on a path of spiritual growth and self-discovery. In this module, the value of taking care of one's spiritual needs is emphasized, and techniques that foster inner tranquility, awareness, and a feeling of purpose are examined. Students will strengthen their relationship with themselves and establish a healthy, content life by participating in these lessons. DEFINITION “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” ~ Pierre Teilhard De Chardin Different people associate different things with spirituality. Few people think it's a connection to our inner self; others associate it with religion, some with a superpower, and yet others with Nature. Whatever way you look at it, spirituality has a lot of advantages. Spirituality has many different facets, from bringing about a positive development in you to increasing your level of happiness in life. In order to reach their higher existence, a person may pursue a belief system outside of religion known as spirituality. It gives one the ability to think that there is more to life than material possessions and that people are more than just their basic existence. It also entails the conviction that life continues after death. Each person has their own definition of spirituality. It is presented in this manner. It is displayed in the manner in which the individual feels most at ease. For instance, some people experience a spiritual connection in places of worship, such as temples, while others may experience it when meditating. It takes time to feel a connection to your higher self. You can raise your spiritual vibration and experience happy emotions by seeking your higher power. Systems Plus College Foundation believes that caring for others is a proper behavior that should not only be practiced on the campus but also in the community. It includes a variety of aspects that revolve around the concepts of respect, kindness, responsibility, and appreciation. At the end of this module, students are expected to: 1. Understand the different forms in which they could show their care to others. 2. Know how to be a caring individual not only on the campus but also in the community. 3. Understand the importance of their rights, privacy, and boundaries. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Caring for Others 101: Paying Everyone with Equal Respect! INTRODUCTION Respect is integral to Filipino culture (Elnar, 2019). That is evident in how we acknowledge older ones with “po” and “opo” and how we address someone older than us with “Ate” or “Kuya” to signify respect (Elnar, 2019). It is only proper that we pay respect to everyone. This includes our family, friends, authorities, and even random people that we meet. Everyone should be respected regardless of their status, gender, age, religion, disability, race, or any other personal or social characteristics that they have. Showing respect to a person just signifies how you perceive them as a fellow human being with equal value and dignity. MOTIVATION Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of several successful companies including the global company of Panasonic Group, is also a best-selling author and a well-known philosopher (“Konosuke Matsushita,” n.d.). With the success of his ventures, he had established seven principles that should be adhered to by all of his employees which are: contribution to society, cooperation and team spirit, fairness and honesty, untiring effort for improvement, adaptability and gratitude, and courtesy and humility (“Panasonic,” 2021). The excerpt below is an anecdote about Konosuke Matsushita that displays great respect for everyone. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Famous Japanese entrepreneur Konosuke Matsushita (1894-1989) once invited some friends to have dinner at a restaurant. He ordered good steaks for everyone, and all of his friends finished their steaks with delight, except Matsushita. Seeing the situation, the manager of the restaurant was very nervous, as he was afraid that there might have been something wrong with the steak. When paying the bill, Matsushita especially asked the chef to come over. He told the chef: “The steak is very delicious, but due to my poor appetite, I didn’t finish it.” He also asked the chef not to worry about it, because it had nothing to do with the quality of the steak, and he hoped the manager would not blame him. Upon hearing that, the chef was truly touched and bowed to express his appreciation to Matsushita. It is well said to never think that other people’s respect for you means you are superior to them. … After all, intellectual people are more likely to respect others. As one of Japan’s greatest entrepreneurs, Matsushita treated everyone equally, without belittling anyone for his or her social status. Only after one can respect the little people can he be counted as a great person. Respecting others is in fact respecting ourselves. (London, 2020, Respecting others section) CARE Questions: Answer these questions and write your answers in the box below. 1. What did you feel after reading the excerpt? Why? 2. Is there any event where you showed great respect for someone? If yes, how did you do it? 3. If you were to choose a role model for respect, who would it be and why? SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER DEFINITION What is respect? “Respect is a positive way of treating or thinking of someone. It involves recognizing their value and importance as a human being and treating them accordingly.” (“What is Respect,” n.d.) ILLUSTRATION Respect in the School Context In school, it is expected that you pay respect to your fellow students, teachers, staff, and personnel—including the guards and janitors. However, in the present times, there has been an observable lack of respect among young generations, including students. According to the State of Philippine Education Report 2023, there have been reports from teachers that students “no longer respect the authority of the teacher in the classroom and behave as though there are no consequences to their actions.” Here at Systems Plus College Foundation, we put great importance on respecting and expecting students to “behave responsibly and maturely at all times.” Any form of disrespect towards teachers, staff, and personnel is subject to disciplinary action. Specifically, respectful students are expected to treat the following people with the list below: Faculty Members ● Listen to them when they are teaching. Let them know that you are eager to learn. ● Do what they ask you to do with honesty and integrity. ● Pay your teachers with equal respect. ● During classes, politely ask your teachers when you want to go to the comfort room. ● Do not interrupt ongoing classes or activities. ● Follow the rules that they set in your class. ● Respect their private time. Avoid disturbing your teachers outside of working hours. Remember that they are also people who need personal time for themselves. ● In case you need to email your teachers, make sure that you are following the rules that they set on the time frame on when you could email them. Also follow other email instructions that they provide. Here are also some etiquettes on writing emails to your teachers (Pritchard & Lloyd, 2023) 1. Write a clear subject line. Your teacher may receive many emails each day, so it's important to be clear about who you are and why you're sending the message. Include your name, the name of the class, the class period if applicable, and—if you are emailing about a specific assignment—the title of that assignment. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 2. Address your teacher formally. It's important to establish a respectful tone in your email, so start with "Dear Mr./Ms./Mrs. [Last Name]" on its own line before creating the rest of the email. 3. Always include some form of body text. When sending in an assignment, for example, it's tempting to attach the assignment and click Send without adding any body text; unfortunately, this is both unprofessional and ambiguous (and, at times, rude). To ensure that your teachers have the proper context for your email, always include a message in the email. 4. Be straightforward. Teachers have a limited amount of time per day to answer your questions, so make your email quick and to-the-point. 5. Understand how to ask for favors. If you are asking for a letter of recommendation or for a chaperone, explain briefly the circumstances and ask in one sentence if it's something they'd be able to do. It's also important to end requests with "Thank you" or "I appreciate your consideration." 6. Use proper grammar and spelling. Your message should be well-written, properly spelled and capitalized, and grammatically correct, even if your message is only a sentence long. 7. Label properly any attached assignments. Before you upload an assignment to the email (if applicable), make sure that the assignment's file name includes your name, the name of the class, the name of the assignment itself, and the period number if possible. 8. End the email. There are many ways to end most emails, but you should always end emails to teachers with some variation of "Thank you," on its own line and then your name on a separate line. Personnel and Staff ● Be respectful to them no matter what their job is. ● Give guards and janitors equal respect as you would do to any teacher or staff. Here are the things that you could do for them: For Guards: ○ Do not get mad when guards ask for your ID or conduct a lawful inspection of your belongings. Show it to them politely. ○ Be polite when you are talking with them. For Janitors: ○ Be sure to be respectful in using your rooms, comfort rooms, and other facilities so the janitors will not have a difficult time cleaning. ○ Always practice CLAYGO or the “Clean As You Go” policy. This means always cleaning your trash and area before you leave. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Fellow Students ● Respect your fellow students’ belongings. ● Be compassionate to every student. Lend them a hand when needed. ● Do not judge other students even when you see that they are different. ● Do not treat others any differently based on their looks, status, disability, or intellectual capacity. ● Do not bully anyone in any form. And stand up for your peers that are being bullied. Any act of bullying can also be reported to authorities such as school teachers. Below are different forms of bullying that one should avoid (“Different Types of Bullying,” n.d.) Physical Bullying This involves hurting someone, or damaging or stealing their belongings. It includes: ● hitting, kicking, pinching, spitting, biting ● tripping, shoving, or intimidating another person ● mean or rude hand gestures ● touching another person when they don't want you to ● being made afraid of being hurt ● stealing or damaging possessions. Verbal Bullying This involves saying or writing mean things. It includes: ● name calling ● teasing someone in a hurtful way ● making fun of someone ● being sarcastic in a hurtful way ● offensive comments, insults, or jokes about someone and their family because of their race, culture, religion, disability, or sexuality ● mean comments about someone's body or physical characteristics such as their weight or height ● hurtful comments about the way someone looks or behaves ● inappropriate sexual comments ● taunting ● threatening to cause harm. Social Bullying This involves hurting someone's relationships or reputation. It includes: ● ignoring or leaving someone out on purpose ● telling others not to be friends with someone ● spreading rumours about someone ● destroying relationships and friendships ● embarrassing someone in public SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER ● ● sharing information or images that will have a harmful effect on the other person telling lies or stories about someone to make others not like them. Everyone ● ● ● ● ● ● Always use appropriate language and proper behavior when you are interacting with others. Follow rules, regulations, and guidelines. Doing so avoids putting others at an inconvenience. This includes walking on the right side of the road. Pay attention to directional arrows that signal where to walk. Also pay attention to other signages that indicate rules and instructions on how to properly do things. Do not dishonor anyone by spreading rumors or committing defamation. Always try to address authorities and people older than you with a “Ma’am” or “Sir.” You can also address them in other ways as long as it is respectful. Greet them. Another great way to show respect is by greeting people whenever necessary. A simple good morning can brighten up someone’s day! May it be your teacher, classmate, guard, or janitor, try to greet them when you have a chance. Greetings, however trivial it may seem, can make someone feel that they are being cared for. It could make them feel seen and that their job is being appreciated. Appreciate people even when they are just doing their job. Remember that not everyone does their job with all their heart. So when they do, be thankful. Here are also other easy ways you can do to show your respect (“What is Respect,” n.d.) ● Treat others how you’d like to be treated ● Practice random acts of kindness for people in your class ● Say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ ● Don’t tease people ● Be patient with others ● Be polite APPLICATION SHARE Form a group of 4 and share your answers to the following questions: 1. When was the last time that you showed respect to someone? 2. Do you practice seeing everybody as your equal and pay them respect just as you want others to do to you? How? 3. Is there anybody whom you think you lack in showing respect? Why do you think you lack in showing your respect to them? 4. What are the things that you want to do or change in order to show your respect? SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Extending Beyond: Spreading Love in the Community INTRODUCTION Respect, love, care, goodness, kindness, and every good thing there is should not be limited to the campus. These should be extended to the community. This is in line with the Systems Plus College Foundation’s philosophy of being committed “to serve God and the community.” From a random act of kindness to volunteer programs, students can create a lasting impact on the lives that they touch. Not only does it create something good for its recipients, but it can also create a chain of good deeds by inspiring others to do the same. MOTIVATION Showing care and kindness does not need to be grand. It does not need to be expensive. It could be a smile, a hug, an ice cream, or a chocolate to brighten up someone’s day. It could also just be an open ear—or an open heart. It could also just be your presence. It does not also need to take days of preparation, it could just be spontaneous. The point is, it does not take too much to create a lasting impact on someone’s life—may it be someone we know, love, or just a random person. The excerpt below shows a perfect example of a stranger’s random kindness that touched another person’s heart. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER A couple of years ago, I stumbled off the subway in Upper Manhattan, exhausted after a long and stressful day at work, dreaming about the warmth of my bed. I stopped in a 7/11 on the way to my apartment to buy a bag of popcorn (treat yourself!). A man about three times my size stood in front of me at the register buying a pack of cigarettes and turned toward me, telling me I looked tired. I smiled uncomfortably and became noticeably more alert, as a young woman does when a strange man starts talking to her at night. He turned toward the cashier and said that he was going to get my snack too. I politely declined and was already pulling out my wallet, but this man wouldn’t allow me to say no. He handed the cashier a couple of extra dollars to cover my popcorn and told me that he hoped my night got better. He walked out of the store and I never saw him again. The world could use a little more kindness. It’s so easy to get caught up in your own routine and everyday personal worries that sometimes we just don’t remember to tune into those around us. The man who paid for my popcorn has stuck with me and inspired me to pay it forward to others who look like they could use a hand. It feels great to be kind, so it’s a win-win! Maybe you need a little guidance on random acts of kindness, but these stories of kindness will definitely encourage you to pass the compassion along. A little bit can go a long way. (“30 Stories,” 2023) CARE Questions: Answer these questions and write your answers in the box below. 1. What did you feel after reading the excerpt? Why? 2. Have you ever received a random act of kindness? What happened? 3. Recall an event when you showed kindness. How did it turn out? SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER DEFINITION We can let others know that we care for them in many ways. It can be in the form of body gestures. It can be with our kind words. It can be with material things. And it could also be with service. As such, another great way to show our care to others is by doing community service and volunteer programs. Here at Systems Plus College Foundation, we believe in the importance of service and the community. To better serve the community, the institution holds Community Extension Programs and Services that aim to increase “awareness of social responsibility and instilling the value of service in the different student organizations.” Through the collaborative efforts of different colleges, faculty members, deans, and program coordinators, the Systems Plus College Foundation creates an impact on its community. What is community service? Sarikas (2018) defines community service as unpaid work that aims to benefit others and could be accomplished by a single person or a group of people. Oftentimes, it is organized by local groups such as schools, religious groups, and other non-profit organizations. It is also usually conducted within or near the area of the volunteer/s to help their own community. Community service can help anyone in need may it be children, people with disabilities, elders, and the poor. It can also help the condition of animals and the environment (Sarikas, 2018). ILLUSTRATION Why is community service important? Community service brings many benefits not only to the community but also to the volunteers themselves. It contributes to the betterment of the community and also helps the volunteers achieve a wider perspective. To some, it may even help in finding their purpose. Listed below are five benefits of community service (“Here’s Why,” n.d.) 1. Community service helps connect to the community 2. It benefits your career prospects 3. Community service raises social awareness 4. Community service establishes contacts and friendships 5. Community service helps improve your skills SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Where to volunteer? One can opt to participate in volunteer programs offered by (1) the school or groups they belong to, (2) places where they want to volunteer, and (3) their community (Sarikas, 2018). Should one be interested in joining community service offered by Systems Plus College Foundation, just report to the Community Extension Services Unit of the External and Community Affairs Office. APPLICATION SHARE Form a group of 4 and share your answers to the following questions: 1. Have you ever done any community service/volunteer work/outreach programs before? If yes, how did it feel? 2. If you were to volunteer, what people or cause are you most interested in helping? 3. Do you know any groups or communities that do community service in which you could be of use? SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Knowing Your Limits: Acknowledging Boundaries INTRODUCTION Together with respect is also acknowledging our fellows’ rights and boundaries. While we already know what to do to show our respect, in this section, we are going to discuss our accountability for maintaining the dignity of our fellow humans. It includes respecting their rights and knowing our boundaries. This section specifically gives emphasis on the importance of data privacy. MOTIVATION Edward Snowden has become a controversial name when it comes to data privacy. In 2013, he became a famous American whistleblower as he leaked to journalists how the NSA invades its citizens’ privacy by tapping into their phones and internet communications (Browne, 2019). He broke the law and was declared to commit an act of treason by unveiling the state’s secret (“Edward Snowden,” n.d.). He had to leave the country to avoid his charges and Russia eventually granted him asylum and let him live there ever since (Browne, 2019). Nevertheless, it would not change the fact that he did the public a favor by informing them about an important aspect of their lives—their privacy. Below is a portion of an article about Edward Snowden and why he decided to commit such an act: SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER The individual responsible for one of the most significant leaks in US political history is Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former technical assistant for the CIA and … has been working at the National Security Agency for the last four years as an employee of various outside contractors … The Guardian, after several days of interviews, is revealing his identity at his request. From the moment he decided to disclose numerous top-secret documents to the public, he was determined not to opt for the protection of anonymity. “I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong,” he said. Snowden will go down in history as one of America’s most consequential whistleblowers, alongside Daniel Ellsberg and Bradley Manning. He is responsible for handing over material from one of the world’s most secretive organisations – the NSA. In a note accompanying the first set of documents he provided, he wrote: “I understand that I will be made to suffer for my actions,” but “I will be satisfied if the federation of secret law, unequal pardon and irresistible executive powers that rule the world that I love are revealed even for an instant.” ... He does not fear the consequences of going public, he said, only that doing so will distract attention from the issues raised by his disclosures. “I know the media likes to personalise political debates, and I know the government will demonise me.” Despite these fears, he remained hopeful his outing will not divert attention from the substance of his disclosures. “I really want the focus to be on these documents and the debate which I hope this will trigger among citizens around the globe about what kind of world we want to live in.” He added: “My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them.” He has had “a very comfortable life” that included a salary of roughly $200,000, a girlfriend with whom he shared a home in Hawaii, a stable career, and a family he loves. “I’m willing to sacrifice all of that because I can’t in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they’re secretly building.” (Greenwald et al., 2013) CARE Questions: Answer these questions and write your answers in the box below. 1. Would you do the same if you were Snowden? Why? 2. Do you think what he did is justifiable? Why or why not? 3. How would you feel if you knew that you were being watched through your gadgets and your information was being collected through your internet communication? SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER DEFINITION What is data privacy? Data privacy refers to a person’s ability to determine or control how, when, and to what extent their personal information is being used and shared with others (“What is Data Privacy,” n.d.). Personal information can refer to a person’s “name, location, contact information, or online or real-world behavior” (“What is Data Privacy,” n.d.). ILLUSTRATION Why is data privacy important? There are many places and situations where people are obligated to share their personal information. May it be in school, work, establishments, job applications, surveys, and a lot more. Every time we share our information there is a potential risk that we endanger ourselves and our identity. And the collection of information is even aggravated with the advancement of digital technology. Hence, it is crucial to have mechanisms that safeguard our information. And that is exactly what data privacy is for. The list below enumerates the benefits of Data Privacy (Tobin, 2023) ● Protection of Personal Information ● Trust and Confidence ● Legal and Regulatory Compliance ● Ethical Data Practices ● Data-driven Innovation ● Preserving Individual Autonomy Systems Plus College Foundation upholds the importance of data privacy. It honors the Republic Act No. 10173 or the Data Privacy Act of 2012. It is the Philippine government’s legislative act made by the National Privacy Commission to protect the information of its citizens. As students, it SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER is important to know your rights regarding your information. But at the same time, when you are already the one in charge of others’ information, you must follow the set of rules and guidelines to protect others’ privacy. When conducting surveys, studies, interviews, and anything that requires the collection of data, it shall be clear how you intend to use the participants’ information. Always inform the participants on how and to what extent you are going to use their data and most importantly, know how to abide by your words and handle their information appropriately. This, too, is a form of showing your care and accountability to others. APPLICATION SHARE Form a group of 4 and share your answers to the following questions: 1. Are there instances where you collect someone’s information? Why? 2. If you did, what are the things that you did to keep things confidential? 3. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into best practices to preserve and enhance each school facility: Laboratories: Laboratories offer hands-on learning experiences, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to practical experiments, fostering curiosity and analytical thinking (Laboratory Definition & Meaning | Dictionary.com, 2020). ● Follow safety protocols, handle equipment with care, and clean up after experiments to ensure a safe and functional learning space for scientific pursuits. Library: The library serves as a knowledge hub, promoting research, reading, and critical information literacy skills, enhancing students' intellectual growth and academic success (Library, 2023). ● The library should be kept clean and free of litter. Chairs should be arranged properly when leaving. Smoking, eating, and drinking are not allowed inside the library. Vandalism is strictly prohibited. Books must be returned in good condition, and borrowers are responsible for them until returned and recorded. Any defects found in borrowed books should be reported to SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER the librarian. Serious offenses, like stealing, damaging books, or property, will be handled by the Office of Student Affairs. Auditorium: The auditorium provides a platform for school events, performances, and public speaking, boosting students' confidence, communication, and leadership abilities (Definition of Auditorium, 2023). ● Keep the auditorium clean and tidy, follow seating arrangements, and report any damages to sustain a well-maintained venue for events and performances. Lobbies: Lobbies offer gathering spaces for students, promoting social interaction and community bonding, fostering a sense of belonging and support within the school (Definition of Lobby, 2023). ● To ensure the school entrance area (lobbies) feels friendly and professional for students and visitors, we should use it for its intended purpose, keep it tidy and free from clutter. It's important not to litter, eat, or spit in the classrooms, lobbies, or hallways, as it helps maintain a clean and pleasant environment for everyone in the school. Gymnasium: The gymnasium promotes physical health and sports activities, enhancing students' physical fitness, teamwork, and discipline, contributing to holistic growth (Gymnasium Definition & Meaning | Dictionary.com, 2021). SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER ● Clean up after use, store equipment properly, and report damages to maintain a well-kept gymnasium that promotes physical fitness and various sports activities. ILLUSTRATION General Care: Caring for our school facilities is like taking care of a big garden full of beautiful flowers. Each facility is like a precious flower, and we are the gardeners! We water the flowers (clean and tidy), remove any weeds (pick up trash), and make sure they have plenty of sunshine (use them responsibly). When we take care of our school facilities, it's like watching our garden bloom and fill our school with happiness and joy! Laboratory (Lab): ● Caring for the lab is like being a scientist with a magic wand! Just like how scientists carefully mix potions to create something special, we must handle the lab equipment with gentle hands and put things back where they belong, like arranging puzzle pieces after solving a tricky puzzle. This way, the lab will always be ready for exciting experiments! Library: ● Imagine the library as a treasure chest full of colorful books, just like a rainbow! Each book is like a precious gem, waiting to be discovered. When we borrow books from the library, it's like taking a friend on a magical adventure. To care for the library, we must treat the books like delicate flowers, turning the pages softly and returning them to their shelves, so other friends can enjoy them too! Auditorium: ● The auditorium is like a magical stage where stories come to life! When we use the auditorium, it's like having a special show for all our friends. Just like actors who dress up and shine like stars, we must keep the auditorium clean and tidy, like sprinkling fairy dust, so every performance is fantastic and full of wonder! Lobbies: SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER ● The lobbies are like big, warm hugs when we enter the school. To care for these friendly spaces, we need to be like smiling greeters, saying hello to friends, and making sure we don't leave any messes behind. It's like tidying up our playroom; when we pick up after ourselves, the lobby becomes even cozier and more welcoming for everyone! Gymnasium ● Picture the Gymnasium as a vast toolbox filled with tools that help students become stronger, healthier, and more confident individuals. When students take care of the Gymnasium, they ensure that all the tools are well-maintained and readily available. This means that students have access to resources that can improve their physical well-being, enhance their teamwork skills, and boost their overall academic performance. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Environmental Care 101: Preface Introduction Aside from taking good care of ourselves and others, valuing the community we belong to is highly important. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2023) defines an environment as the surrounding body of circumstances, objects, or conditions by a person. This module will discuss how we can care for our environment as Systems Plus College Foundation students and be better fellows in our community, respectively. The objectives of this module are the following: 1. Understand the surrounding issues regarding the environment; 2. Be informed about the benefits of a good environment; 3. Prevent risks from happening within the environment; 4. Realize the institution’s dos and don’ts within the community; and 5. Create extreme importance for protecting and keeping the environment safe from destruction. All Natural, No Chemical: Basics of Nature INTRODUCTION The Philippine forest this year is at 12.5 million hectares from 13.2 million hectares in 2010. Furthermore, the country also lost 1.42 million hectares of tree cover, resulting in a 7.6% decrease compared to 2001 (Global Forest Watch, 2023). With that, the Systems Plus College Foundation aims its students to: 1. Understand the basic concepts of nature 2. Know the benefits of plants and animals to the community With these objectives, we are able to understand the environment in the community we belong in! ICE BREAKER SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Paint the House: A Coloring Game Instruction: Color or shade anything that involves nature in the picture. Color/Shade as many as you see. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER DEFINITION What is Nature? Nature is the entirety of the external world. Nature includes plants, animals, and humans interacting with each other. With that, forests and animals, as part of nature, emphasize the benefits and importance of these natural resources to the environment (Definition of nature, 2023). Forest Cover Vs. Tree Cover Forest cover is the amount of land plants cover. On the other hand, tree cover is the amount of land being covered by trees only. What are the causes of forest and tree cover loss? (World Resources Institute, n.d.) 1. Deforestation is one of the primary causes of forest and tree cover loss, such as from January 2022 to July 2023, there have been 3,119,642 deforestation alerts in the Philippines (GFW, 2023). 2. Natural disasters can cause permanent removal of trees (i.e., storm damage). 3. Forest fire. 4. Other man-made activities that cause temporary or permanent loss of trees (e.g., logging production) What are the effects of forest and tree cover loss? (World Resources Institute, n.d.) 1. The Carbon Dioxide Emissions increased by 39.8 million tons with the forest loss and 848 million tons with the tree cover. 2. Increases effects and drivers of climate change. 3. Habitat loss for some animals, especially forest-dependent ones. With that, in the Philippines, here are the Top 6 Endangered Animals due to forest threats (Perez, 2019): SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 1: Philippine Eagle 2: Negros Bleeding-Heart 3: Visayan Wrinkled Hornbill 4: Cebu Flowerpecker 5: Tamaraw 6: Palawan Bearded Pigs (Baboy Damo) Now, let us understand the benefits of plants and animals to the environment and community (Cook, 2018). Plants to the Community 1. Plants are used to create clothing (e.g., straw hats and woven cotton) 2. Plants are a source of food for both humans and animals. 3. Plants, especially in forests, create a habitat for animals. 4. Plants provide oxygen to humans and animals. 5. Forests filter water to provide clean water to animals. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Animals to the Community 1. Animal furs also create clothing in colder climates (e.g., sheep’s wool) 2. Animals are a source of food, similar to plants. 3. Animals helped the community in labor-intensive activities before the development of various advanced technologies, such as the Philippine Carabaos helping to pull plows to fields and horses used to travel by many. Until now, animals help when technology is not accessible within the labor area. 4. Some animals provide help to plants to reproduce (e.g., pollination) 5. Animals, when domesticated, are human companions (e.g., dogs, birds, and cats) ILLUSTRATION Golden Rule! Think of taking care of the plants and animals as the golden rule. You should treat others the way you want to be treated yourself. If you want to have good tree shade during a sunny day or not to be harmed by a cat or a dog, you should also respect them, even though they could not be on the same level of thinking as you APPLICATION Reflective Activity Instructions: Go back to the colored activity, have you seen how colorful the house was with nature? SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER The Color and Feeling of Gray: Waste and Garbage INTRODUCTION At Systems Plus College Foundation, we value going greener towards environmental conservation and having a better community to live and belong in. This section aims for students to: 1. Know the types of waste 2. Understand the 4R Principle of Waste Management 3. Be informed about the basic proper waste disposal practices in the Philippines Why? The Philippines currently generated an estimated 18.05 million tons of waste in 2020 and is expected to reach 23.61 million tons in 2025 (Tinio, 2022). How heavy is that? 18.05 million tons of waste Weight of 2 million elephants ICE BREAKER Hanapin Mo ang Kalat Mo! (Find Your Mess!) Instruction: Encircle the 9 things that are not in their proper places and box the ones that should be thrown away (11). SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER DEFINITION Definition (Waste Vs. Garbage) Wastes are everything that is no longer in use or purpose that you need to throw away, dispose or discard. The waste we come across in our environment is commonly referred to as garbage, which is common in solid forms and usually present in our homes, municipalities, school, and offices (American Veterinary Medical Foundation, n.d.). Back To Basics: Two Types of Wastes According to Byju’s (n.d.), there are two types of waste: biodegradable and non-biodegradable. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 1. Biodegradable wastes (Basurang Nabubulok) are wastes that can decompose, disintegrate, or rot over a period of time. Some of the examples are food waste and paper. 2. Non-biodegradable wastes (Basurang Di Nabubulok) are wastes that can be recycled or reused because they do not decompose by themselves and are one of the significant causes of pollution. Some of the examples are glass, styrofoam, and plastics. Back to the Basics: 4R Principle of Waste Management (The Ministry of Infrastructure Cook Islands, 2022) REFUSE The first step of waste management is to say NO. It is best to refuse materials that can increase environmental impact and waste in landfills. Some of these materials are single-use plastics (e.g., straws, bags) and styrofoam. What can we do if we say NO? 1. Carry a reusable bag when going shopping. 2. Carry a water bottle or reusable tumbler when you are going outside. 3. Request reusable containers, if possible. 4. Bring your own cutlery (reusable spoon, fork, and drinking straw) REDUCE If it is unavoidable to refuse, you can use less. Some of these are: 1. Print documents double-sided. 2. Buy sturdy clothes and bags for reuse. 3. Buy larger containers of items instead of smaller ones. 4. Buy products with minimal packaging to have lesser garbage or waste. REUSE OR REPURPOSE It simply means to use something again with its same purpose instead of throwing them away. On the other hand, you could use these materials for a new purpose through repurposing. Examples are the following: 1. Give away books, magazines, and toys to donation boxes SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 2. Use glass jars as drinking glasses or organizers 3. Reuse sturdy shopping bags for storage 4. Reuse wrapping paper for future gifts RECYCLE It means to use something again. In the Philippines, a group of recyclers known as The Plastic Flamingo turns plastic bottles into building planks. Recycling gives the following benefits: 1. It saves landfill space. Similar to refusing, recycling reduces the waste in landfills. 2. Separation of recyclable materials helps waste facilities to waste management. ILLUSTRATION Proper Bins in the Philippines In the Philippines, we often see these three types of waste bins—non-biodegradable, recyclable, and biodegradable. With that, Filipinos need to be familiarized with the basics of waste management for effective disposal of waste in the country. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER SPCF Cares: All for the Environment INTRODUCTION The Systems Plus College Foundation’s Philosophy is “Commitment to Excellence to serve God and the Community.” With that, the institution needs to take excellent care of its community and be a good example to its students. With that, it is important for SPCF that the students will: 1. Know the institution’s dos and don’ts within the community 2. Realize the institutional practices to a safer community By having these objectives, the students will be able to participate in strengthening environmental situation in the community! ICE BREAKER Yay or Nay Instruction: Look at the picture and check the “Yay” if it shows proper care to the environment and “Nay” if not. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER Yay Nay Yay Nay Yay Nay Yay Nay DEFINITION How does SPCF take good care of its environment? The Systems Plus College Foundation values the importance of safety and environmental guidelines in Angeles City and the Philippines. With that, the SPCF: 1. Complies with the establishment's safety guidelines. The SPCF has to provide trash bins for proper waste disposal to maintain a clean and healthy environment for the faculty and studentry. SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 2. Maintains its orchard preservation on the campus. The SPCF is known for having the biggest campus orchard in Angeles City. With that, the institution put the highest consideration into building placements, ensuring that the construction area would not harm trees in exchange for a new building or facility. 3. Ensures the safety of animals living inside the campus. Due to the orchard being present, various animals tend to live within the orchard because it is their primary habitat. Because of that, the institution ensures its safety similarly to the safety of the students and staff. How can you, as a student of SPCF, take good care of the environment? As a student of the institution, you can: 1. Bring your reusable cutlery or utensils for your food and your water tumblers for drinking. Since the institution promotes environmental conservation, it is best to participate in their advocacy, even in the little ways possible. 2. Prevent harming plants or animals. Avoid kicking or stepping on plants and animals to preserve peace in the community and environment. For the plants to continuously grow healthily, it is best to let them in their places. Most animals in the orchard are not domesticated— whether cats or dogs— and to avoid getting hurt, avoid petting them as much as possible. 3. Practice CLAY Go or Clean As You Go. When you use the school facilities, make sure you leave them clean to help the maintenance people from more work. This practice is also in consideration for others who may want to use the facilities right after you. Examples could include cleaning your table in the school cafeteria after eating, picking up trash below your desk before leaving your classroom, and erasing the writings on the board after class. As a participating citizen, how can you take good care of the community? As a participating citizen, you must practice what the institution taught you even outside of the school. With that, as a Filipino, you must: 1. Prevent littering on streets. There are designated trash bins on the streets, and be on your best behavior to keep your trash until you find one! SPCF CARES BY: SPCF ACAP CENTER 2. Keep yourselves from petting animals. Similar to the school's orchard, stray animals could also be undomesticated, so to prevent yourself from hurting, you should not pet them even if it looks gentle. 3. Not harm any plants. Prevent yourself from stepping or kicking plants on your way. Furthermore, avoid picking flowers. Even though it is tempting to keep one for yourself, it is best only to get one if you ask for permission. 4. Follow the street signs. There are several signages posted on the streets to keep you informed. With that, you should comply and follow what is stated with the signs, even though no one is looking! ILLUSTRATION Beat that Monster! Illustrate your garbage as a monster or villain from your favorite game who kept on growing when being fed by garbage.
