Being a manager in any company is a tough job. The amount of pressure is
tremendous and every decision you made and actions you take can affect the company.
Colleagues, especially your bosses, are always expecting high. Your subordinates are
learning from you and always listens. Always looking up to you. They always watch your
every move you take and analyze if you can be a great manager to them. So, if you are
a first-timer manager, I can share some of my research on how to become an effective
manager. What skills you need or to improve or to learn. Learning crucial tips on
leadership and more.
Throughout the researched that I have made, I am confident enough to share it to
you about how to become an exceptionally effective manager.
According to the Management Advisor Service (2022), good managers or
effective managers achieves a hardworking, productive and effective workforce that
punches above its weight in its performance. In other words, if you feel that your team or
what you managing are doing great, working efficiently and finishes job ahead of its time
and your staff eager to work, then you can say you an effective manager. But if the
opposite if happening in your workplace, then it is time rethink about your decision and
actions that you are taking.
Michelle Donovan a Director of People Operations at Google (2022), her
company, Google, were made to identify the best and worst managers. They discovered
that the best managers are more helpful advocate, working efficiently and decisions were
made quickly. Resources were allocated well and all staff’s ideas are being considered.
Have transparency in working so that everyone can catch up and everyone is being
treated equally. Managers also involves themselves in decision-making so that they can
come up with the best solution. Lastly, they let their employees balance work time and
personal life.

From these two articles I learned that to become an effective manager, first you
need to understand your people. Your staff. Because they are the one who are making
your decision possible. Though I am not saying that managers do not need to work and
just rely on your staff. My point is that once you understand your people, you can come
up with creative ideas and decision that would fit to your staff. Executing your ideas and
decision would be a plain sailing and for sure it would make your workplace more
interesting, lively, productive and more likely; it would make you become more than a
manager and so as your staff. Both of you will grow into something more.
Since I have tackled on how to become an effective manager, next would-be what
skills you need or needed to learn and how to improve it.
Great managers are essential to every company because they are the one who
manages the business. Some industries are harsh and hard to compete; and every
industry have different goals and problems. It is survival to the fittest out there. You will
never know what will happen tomorrow, or next week, or months or even next years. So,
managers should always have a good set of skills in order to prove themselves that they
are worthy. That they can overcome any unexpected problems or any on going problem
that they might be or currently facing.
Brighton School of Business and Management (2022), gives 6 essential skills
for managers.
First is good communication skill. According to them, it is the most important
skills and if you are a good communicator, then the rest of the skills won’t really matter.
Because if you can deliver your message clearly or deliver your thoughts, ideas to your
staff, things will be easier. Good communication skills are not only pertaining on how you
deliver your message but it also pertains on how you deliver your thoughts and ideas.
You will also be aware on your words that you are saying. You think before you speak.

Second is Good Organization. As what I have stated earlier, you will never know
what will happened tomorrow, or next week, or months, or even next years. But having a
good organization skill, it will eliminate this idea because if you are organized enough,
what will happen in the future won’t matter to you because everything is on schedule. You
are always on step ahead. You already planned everything. Also, workplace won’t be
messy because you have set of rules and your staff won’t be having a hard time doing
their work because everything is already in place.
Third would be Team Building. Since in every workplace, you will encounter
different people and everyone is different. Putting them in one place would be chaotic but
that is the setting of every business and there is nothing you can do about it. As manager,
you should be able to handle it. And they suggest that you must come up with different or
creative ways on how to make your team intact. Like listen to your members issues and
discuss it with your team so you can come up with a solution. Failing to do this will lead
to unhealthy workforce. Thus, fail business. And we don’t want that to happen, so make
your team healthy by interacting with them and resolve issues as soon as possible.
Forth is Leadership. It means that define your goals with your members then
assign responsibility to various team members clearly. Vision is also important because
this will be the team’s guide to achieve the goal. Every effective leader is being followed
because they give them their goals and they set their vision so that their team or followers
won’t lost.
Fifth is Ability to Deal with Changes Effectively. It only means that managers
should be adaptable and flexible. So that when obstacle encountered, you will be able to
pass through it.
Lastly is Domain Knowledge. It basically means that you should be able to know
or understand how the process on what you are managing works. Or in short, you should

know more than you know so that your team or your business that you are managing
always works at 101%.
All of these ties in good communication skills. You won’t be able to gain these skills
if you do not have good communication skills. If you think you are not skilled enough with
the said skill, then you need to work on it. Even I, are still having a hard time improving
my communication skills. So, researched on different ways to improve it.
