Discuss how the written and visual features in text 1 work to represent a genre.
Written codes and body language have been used in Text 1 to represent the romantic genre. The
image showcases two people kissing below a big text, labelled "The Kiss Quotient".
Written codes has been used to represent the romanticism genre which has been described through
high inference words of "fall in love". The use of the word "love" signifies the passion and emotion
they have for each other which has been represented by two people kissing. As such, it conforms to
this genre as it usually evolves with emotions and mental senses that are not able to be fabricated. It
highlights the unison of a romantic genre which has been further elaborated by the use of high
inference words "dare you" to demonstrate the passion and 'love' they feel with one another,
connotating the strong emotions they are able to have with one another in this setting. The use of
the big text in the bottom middle of the page saying "Kiss Quotient" embodies itself as a split
between two human beings where passion and love are represented through the book, evident
through the equation of how they are able to be a 'whole' once two halves are connected together.
As such, written codes have been used to represent and conform towards the romantic genre where
love, passion and emotion are evident.
Similarly, body language has been used to represent the romantic genre where two heterosexual
figures are shown to be kissing. This signifies the emotions they are able to showcase and represent
towards one another where they are able to do this. Their body position, with the female's body,
attaching herself to the male's body with only her hands, symbolising the passion they have for each
other. This is further demonstrated via the mathematical formulas behind them which signifies of
how love, passion and the romantic genre are like an equation, where people are either able to get it
wrong or right. It highlights itself of the situation this genre is able to be created with the correct
formula and equations that are abundant in people's lives. It compares to the amount of people that
are in society as formulas, evident that only one person and equation is able to be created as a 'tight'
fit for love and this romantic genre. As such, body language and imagery has been used to represent
the genre of romanticism through the written codes of love and the body language of the two
heterosexual relationship they have with one another.
Explain how at least two language features in text 2 are used to develop an idea about place.
Text 2, an excerpt from the novel Wake in Fright written by Australian author Kenneth Cook uses
descriptive language and imagery to describe the land as a desolate and empty place.
Descriptive language has been used in Text 2 to showcase how the place described by Cook as a
desolate and empty location to live in. He highlights this through high inference words within the
start of the passage, describing the location of where the protagonist is currently teaching, "semidesert". This highlights the arid location in which it is hard for the people of the town to survive. This
has been done via the high inference word of "desert" which signifies dry and emptiness in the place
for which has been described. This demonstrates that for prolonged periods of time,"...earth had
been innocent of any trace of moisture for months" which portrays how dry and desolate the
environment is, and how desperate the people are for there to be rainfall.
Similarly, imagery has been used to symbolise the idea of the town being desolate and empty for
their society to live in. This has been described through high inference words by the author "plains
stretching west" which highlight how far the protagonist is able to see from where he is standing but
also the description of the dryness of the environment. This demonstrates the vast and desolate
environment that has been described through imagery by Cook. This has been further demonstrated
through imagery described by Cook, "people had withered, their skins contracting and their eyes
sinking as their stock became white bones", by describing people as having contracting skins, which
is apparent from the harsh sun and dry environment, signifies how harsh the environment is
towards the town where people struggle to survive. The second part of the sentence, describing
stock as white bones signify the extreme malnutrition the animals are suffering throughout in which
they are not able to be fed the correct nutrients to survive in this town. This adds to the desolate
nature of the town as not only the animals are finding it difficult to survive, but the population as
well.
Analyse the way in which written/visual features in text 4 are used to appeal to the values of an
audience
Body language and Written codes have been used in text 4 to appeal the values of wealth and family
connections towards the audience shown in the poster.
Body language has been used in Text 4 to showcase how family connections and wealth are used.
This has been demonstrated via a child and its mother figure where their hands are connected
together. This highlights the family values and connection with each other that the watch brand has
conveyed, symbolising the values of family and being together for generations. Through this poster
of a luxury watch brand - Patek Philippe, showcases the values towards items of wealth- a watch to
unify family conditions together which symbolises how they are able to be connected together,
having a strong family connection between each other. As such, it shows how a watch is able to
ensure family wealth and status through advertising this through a wealthy and high socioeconomic
status of family which values family and love for each other.
Similarly, written codes have been used through the top right of the Text 4 which showcases the
values of family connection and love for each other. The description of the watch, comparing it to
family and its future presence, "...never actually own" which signifies that once the watch is bought,
is not owned by yourself, but along with your family members for life. It acts as a symbol of how
material wealth not only allows people to think of themselves but also their future generation,
ensuring their legacy of family and its values of connection and wealth. Furthermore, the phrase
"merely look after it for the next generation" further highlights how the watch is not only a an
accessory but also how it is able to be kept and loved through multiple generations to be cherished.
It showcases the whereby owning a branded watch is able to give for a high socioeconomic family
the value of love and connections with one another in a family.
