Through its unique structure, RMSLA allows students to matriculate through middle school at an accelerated pace and enroll in freshmen core classes during 8th grade. Utilizing a cohort model, students experience a structured learning path, thus, better preparing them to meet the demands of the future. RMS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY QUALIFICATIONS A’s and B’s in all academic classes Strong Character and Leadership Potential Maintain a 3.0 GPA APPLICATION PROCESS Submit Parent and Student Info Sheets Submit 4th grade GA Milestones scores and 5th grade ITBS scores Submit final copy of 5th grade Report Card and GA Milestones Scores (upon receipt) RMS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY Rigorous Academic Program Exposes students to High School Standards in 8th grade Allows students to earn High School credits while in Middle School A Cohort Model Hones Leadership Skills Requires participation in community service CURRICULUM CURRICULUM RMSLA uses an accelerated curriculum. As a leadership academy, the students will study the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens”, to teach students leadership skills. Students are then required to demonstrate these skills by giving service hours, leading classroom discussions, participating in ceremonies and accepting leadership responsibilities. Parents are encouraged to remain abreast of leadership opportunities their students can earn within their own community. To earn those hours, they must be documented and signed off on by the appropriate community manager or site-based leader. Items that will be required to be housed in this binder are Transcripts (progress reports and semester report cards) One exemplar artifact from each academic course for each quarter (i.e. project, essay, lab) Log of community service hours Quarterly reflections (1-page, typed summary) Leadership articles, pictures, or other items related to the academy VOLUNTEER POLICY Parents of students currently enrolled into RMSLA are required to volunteer no less than 10 hours during the course of a given school year. Students are to complete at least 10 hours of community service in or out of the school context Parents and students are to log completed hours; student tracking will be housed in RMSLA portfolio. MIDDLE Elementary o Pull out, once a week o Enrichment for social studies and science o Done in units with checklist at the end of each unit Middle o Everyday o Academic class o Grade is given versus a check for satisfactory completion. Grade must be an 80% and above to avoid probation and/or dismissal. GIFTED SERVICES 6-8 Can receive services in one to four advanced core content classes and: will participate in individual and group projects in area(s) of content placement(s) will be supervised by gifted teacher to conduct in-depth research students are evaluated based on performance. TAG PLACEMENTS Rising 6th grade students are placed in middle school courses by their current TAG teacher based on the following criteria: A score of 90th percentile and above on the 5th grades ITBS test per each content area Teacher recommendations Academic grades in each content area The Placement Guidelines Sheet ***Please be sure to acquire a copy of your child’s TAG placement for 6th grade from the current elementary TAG teacher.
