STEPS IN CORD DRESSING 1. Verify physician order for cord dressing. 2. Gather the necessary materials. 3. Perform hand hygiene and put on sterile gloves. 4. Clamp and cut the cord after cord pulsations have stopped (typically at 1-3 minutes). 5. Put ties tightly around the cord at 2cm and 5cm from he newborn’s abdomen. 6. Cut the ties with sterile instrument. 7. Observe for oozing blood. Wipe excess blood with sterile gauze. 8. Do not milk the cord towards the newborn. 9. No dressing should be applied and the cord should be kept open and dry. 10. Normally it falls off after 5-10 days but may take longer especially when infected.
