Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Scenario for the Bi-Copter Group:
You are a junior member of the research and development team based within a large company manufacturing
Multi-rotor Drones. The company is in the process of developing the next generation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
(UAVs) and you have been tasked with researching the latest developments in Bi-copter. Your research needs to
focus on how new technologies, configuration and materials can be utilized and integrated into the design process
and how these potential developments would impact on the flying factors of the Bi-copter, such as attitude and
altitude controllability, stability, speed etc. Flight tests needs to be conducted to verify the controller's effectiveness
and the effect of the system's nature. In order to complete the preliminary stages of the research project, you should
produce a comprehensive project proposal, based upon your initial research, which evaluates and justifies the
rationale for your research.
.
To complete this part, the following elements should also be undertaken:

Produce an initial research project proposal that clearly defines a research question or hypothesis,
identifying the resource requirements and estimation of time required to complete the project.

Identify and discuss your key project objectives, what it is you are setting out to achieve and how you
intend to achieve them, the resulting goals and rationale.

Analyse and justify your selection of the essential elements of the project specification and undertake a
SWOT analysis and feasibility study to identify any potential risks associated with the project.

Scenario for Single Rotor UAV Group:
You are working as a junior Aeronautical Engineer in a company that is involved in the various aspects of
designing, modelling, building, and manufacturing small-scaled UAVs. The company is currently working on
a project that involves developing a portable spherical unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which is powered by a
single rotor. You have been tasked to design and build a Low Cost Single-rotor spherical UAV with the aim
that this could be used to encourage and help Engineering students to acquire a basic knowledge in design
concept, flight dynamics, flight stability, control structure and performance of small-scaled drones, and to
demonstrate how type of single-rotor spherical UAV has its advantages over other types of multi-rotor UAVs.
Hence you are required to carry out a research on how technologies, development processes and materials can
be utilised and integrated to develop a Single rotor UAV. In order to complete the preliminary stages of the
research project, you should produce a comprehensive project proposal, based upon your initial research,
which evaluates and justifies the rationale for your research.
.
To complete this part, the following elements should also be undertaken:

Produce an initial research project proposal that clearly defines a research question or hypothesis,
identifying the resource requirements and estimation of time required to complete the project.

Scenario for the Group building the Model RC Plane :
You are a junior member of the research and development team based within a large company that
manufactures electric-powered radio controlled aircraft. The company has tasked you with a project and that is
to design and create a small-scaled remote controlled electric-powered model aircraft which should be a
replica of an existing full-scale aircraft for testing of future aviation designs. Your research needs to focus on
how to build a low-cost RC aircraft that is easy to fly; made from light weight and durable structure with the
ability to survive from some slight crashes. Also the aircraft considered in this study needs to have high lift
and drag characteristics, and this can be achieved by determining the optimum values for the dimensions and
parameters of the major parts of the RC aircraft. In order to complete the preliminary stages of the research
project, you should produce a comprehensive project proposal, based upon your initial research, which
evaluates and justifies the rationale for your research.
.
To complete this part, the following elements should also be undertaken:

Produce an initial research project proposal that clearly defines a research question or hypothesis,
identifying the resource requirements and estimation of time required to complete the project.

Identify and discuss your key project objectives, what it is you are setting out to achieve and how you
