PFC Lawson is about to leave the Korean Pennisula within the next two weeks. He and a few
friends decide to go out to celebrate the completion of their tour. PFC Lawson, PFC Warren, and
PFC Deluca are of legal drinking age, so they decide to have dinner at a favorite restaurant and
nightclub. After dinner and several margaritas, Lawson, Warren, and Deluca decide to return to
the installation. Upon their return, the Soldiers purchase some tequila and continue drinking. The
next morning, Warren wakes up naked from the waist down with shaving cream spread over his
genitalia. He vaguely remembers talk about lewd sex acts. Lawson tells Warren that he has an
extremely long tongue and knows how to use it. Deluca informs Warren that several
inappropriate pictures were taken of him while he was passed out drunk and these pictures are
being passed around the unit. Warren does not want to report the incident because he wishes to
avoid an embarrassing investigation.

Case Study:
You are a Platoon Sergeant assigned to the 121 CSH located at Yongsan, Garrison. An old friend
from basic, SFC Maria Kamatani, is also assigned as a Platoon Sergeant. Although the two of
you are not particularly close, you occasionally get together for dinner or drinks with some other
old friends. Over the last few months, you have heard gossip that SFC Kamatani was involved
with an older, married man, SGM Rick Mortenson. Several people reported seeing them dancing
and kissing at a bar in Itaewon. You are not surprised, because you know she had an affair with a
married officer at her last assignment, too. While you are worried about her and the impact this
choice could have on her career, you figure she is a grown-up and can take care of herself, so
you have minded your own business. Today you are awakened by an early call from SFC
Kamatani. She is crying and asks if she can come over because she needs to talk to somebody.
You agree, and when she arrives, you can see she is in bad shape, with bruises on her arms and a
big rip in her sleeve. SFC Kamatani starts telling you her story. She says she and SGM
Mortenson started dating five months ago. He told her he was separated from his wife and
waiting for their divorce to go through. Everything seemed great at first and SGM Mortenson
was incredibly romantic. After a few weeks, she started to suspect that his statement about being
separated was a lie, but they were having so much fun, she ignored the little nagging concerns.
Last week, SFC Kamatani learned that not only was SGM Mortenson still married, his wife was
pregnant with twins. She felt sick about the affair and decided she needed to end it. On Saturday
night, when SGM Mortenson came to her apartment, SFC Kamatani tearfully told him what she
had learned and said she could not continue the relationship. At first SGM Mortenson broke
down crying, said he could not live without her, and tried to hold and kiss her. However, when
SFC Kamatani pushed him away and said that she was serious and the relationship had to end,
SGM Mortenson grew violent. He knocked over a lamp and threw a book at her, then grabbed
SFC Kamatani and forced her onto the bed. While she struggled and screamed, he held her
down, covered her mouth, and raped her. After he left, SSG Kamatani called you—the first
person she could think of who wouldn’t judge her.
