Course Description
In this course, the student continues to use the framework of Watson’s Caring Model to meet the
needs of clients in various age groups with chronic alterations in nutrition, bowel elimination, urinary
elimination, sensory/motor functioning, oxygenation, tissue perfusion, and immune responses. Focus
is on the application of the nursing process to manage the care of clients and groups of clients in
acute care, long-term care, and community health settings.
Course Objectives
1. Incorporate knowledge and skills from the communication arts, information technology, social and
biological sciences and previous nursing courses in caring for clients in all age groups with chronic
alterations in human needs.

disciplinary perspectives, and hone the ability to deepen and continue learning.
2. Evaluate caring behaviors in the safe management of clients of all ages with chronic health
problems in community, long-term and acute care settings.

3. Integrate the nursing process using a creative problem-solving approach to provide clientcentered care to culturally diverse clients with chronic alterations in human needs.

Teaching Methodology
For the purposes of this course and to address the multiple learning styles of students, a
variety of methods and strategies will be used to enhance the facilitation of student education.

Methods of Evaluation
Theory:
Unit Exams (3): 60% of course grade
Comprehensive Final Examination: 35% of course grade
Assignments & activities: 5% of course grade
 Group Activities: (4): 40 points ( worth 1% of course grade)
 Kaplan 2.5% of course grade
 Prep-U 2.5% of course grade
Kaplan – 2% - Focused exams with remediation, Integrated exams plus
remediation, Diagnostic Tests, Sample Tests plus remediation, Question
Trainer. Students must complete all assignments. Students must spend time
in remediation for focused tests, please see chart below. You should spend 1
minute per question for incorrect or difficult concepts on the other Kaplan
exams. Once all assignments are completed on time then the student will be
graded based on their overall score. Failure to complete Kaplan assignments
may result in an incomplete or failure of the course.

The Kaplan Diagnostic Test can be taken at home, students should
score at least 65% on this exam. Review the test results and look at
client needs categories. Identify your 3 lowest client need categories
and start to complete Q bank questions in these areas as soon as
possible and remediate all questions.
Prep U – 2% - all Prep U assignments must be completed on time for full
credit at the appropriate level. Failure to complete Kaplan assignments may
result in an incomplete or failure of the course.
Group Assignment – 1% - this assignment will be provided to students during
class or one week prior to class.

Clinical:
Laboratory: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.
Course:
To pass this course, a student must achieve a minimum grade of 75% (C)
in theory and a Satisfactory grade in clinical. All online assignments must
be completed satisfactorily and submitted on time. In addition, The
Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing Program’s affiliation with
Kaplan Program is a contractual agreement to provide the individual
student with a basic remediation program at a minimum student cost
each semester. This program will support the Associate Degree in Nursing
student’s educational needs and Preparation for the NCLEX exam.
Students are required to participate in the NCLEX preparation program
which includes the Kaplan Exit Exam and NCLEX Live Review. Also,
proof of having completed six (6) hours of community service is to be
submitted by the 12th week of the semester.

Academic Integrity Standards
New York City College of Technology Policy on Academic Integrity
Students and all others who work with information, ideas, texts, images, music, inventions, and

Cheating/Plagiarism/Unfair Advantage
The Department of Nursing at New York City College of Technology views cheating,
plagiarism, and gaining unfair advantage as serious offenses. Students suspected of cheating,
plagiarizing or gaining unfair advantage may receive a zero for the assignment or examination
and will be subject to further disciplinary action by the College. For more information, refer to

Attendance and Lateness
Class: One absence puts the student at risk for failing the course. Two lateness’ will constitute an
absence. Lateness is 5 minutes or more after class start time. More than one absence is considered
overcut and can result in course failure. The Department of Nursing Examination Policy regarding
attendance and lateness for testing is reviewed on page 13 and is available in the Nursing Student
Handbook
Clinical/lab: More than one absence or two lateness in the clinical is considered overcut and results
in clinical failure. The clinical component of the course must be satisfactorily fulfilled, or course failure
will ensue. In case of personal emergency, please let the Clinical Instructor know via City Tech email
ASAP or within 24 hours of an absence.

Course Content Focus
Emphasis in this course is on restoration of function for growth and survival. Each topic will include
examples of psychosocial/cultural issues; legal/ethical responsibilities; pertinent health teaching and
accountability in the care of clients with chronic alterations.

The professor may assign other readings, assignments within the semester to meet the
educational goals of the course.
The professor may conduct an online hybrid session due to scheduling or other issues.
The professor reserves the right to change the date, time and/or location of the
examinations. All students should be prepared to stay for 3 hours on testing days. For example,
be prepared to stay until 1pm for a 10am test.
Group Activities
Groups and activities will be assigned at the start of class (groups are randomly
assigned). There will be four group activities, worth 10 points each for a possible total of
40 points. In order to earn full credit for each group activity, the following criteria must be
met:
1) Must be present and on time for class*
2) Must participate in group work
3) Group must complete the activity in the allotted time and be prepared to present
to the class.
Each group will be expected to appoint the following roles:
 Group Leader: Organize the group and direct group members. Has final say
regarding the group’s answers/responses to the group activity. Does presentation
to the class or may designate other group member(s) to present. Has the
authority to report to professor if a group member did not meet criteria #2.
 Group Recorder: Succinctly and accurately documents the main ideas and
answers/responses of the group. Presents answers/responses to the group for

final review. Monitors the time to ensure group completes the activity in the
allotted time.
*In the event of an excused absence, individual makeup assignments may be given,
upon request, at the discretion of the professor. However, only a maximum of 5 points
will be granted for individual makeup assignments. Requests for makeup assignments
must be made within 7 days of original group activity date.
In the event of lateness to class, 2 points will be deducted (from the individual’s grade)
for every 15 minutes of lateness.
Additional Policies
The recording and/or screenshot/photos of lectures, activities, examinations, and exam
reviews are not permitted in NUR 2210.
Distribution of course materials (i.e.: PowerPoint slides, handouts, journal articles,
assignments) is not permitted to any other individual within the City Tech Nursing
program or outside of it, without permission from the professor.
This course consists of in-person lectures and in-person, proctored exams at City Tech.
However, depending on the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic and state/city
guidelines, lectures and exams may be converted to an online environment. Please be
advised that courses within the nursing program may use proctoring/lockdown browser
for exams which may consist of different modalities such as, but not limited to, live
proctoring or video recorded proctoring. Please note that the proctoring tool/lockdown
browser may only be required if the course description or course syllabus noted that one
might be used, allowing the student to make an informed decision about enrolling in that
course. A student cannot be compelled to agree to the terms and conditions of
proctoring solutions procured by the University, Colleges, Programs, and/or those which
may be bundled in with specific textbooks. An incomplete will be provided to the student
in the course, until an alternative assessment is provided. When in doubt, please refer to
the following guidance from our Office of General Counsel regarding this matter.

Student Absence or Lateness for an Examination
In the event of an absence from an examination, it is the responsibility of the student to
notify the corresponding course faculty within 24 hours. Notification must be made to the
corresponding faculty’s NYCCT email address. A determination at the faculty’s
discretion will then be made whether a makeup examination is warranted. Progression

on to the next examination cannot occur until a missed makeup examination is
completed. Makeup examinations must be completed prior to the next unit examination.
Five (5) points will be deducted for makeup unit examinations and ten (10) points
will be deducted for the makeup final examination. A grade of zero (0) will be
assigned for any missed makeup examination, not taken at the scheduled time.
A student who is late for an examination will be required to complete the examination in
the remaining examination period, extra time will not be given.
Professional Communication
Nursing students are expected to conduct themselves ethically and with integrity while
communicating with professors, staff, and students in all electronic, oral, visual, and
written forms of communication and adhere to the following:
Email address: Students are required to use their City Tech email address for
all electronic communication related to their studies at City Tech or during any
off-campus clinical assignment.
Email etiquette: Students shall follow basic rules of email etiquette, such as (a)
including a clear and direct subject line, (b) being brief, concise, and clear in the
body of the email, and (c) obeying standard rules of grammar and style; and
avoid being overly familiar. When writing to a professor or senior administrative
official at the college, students must include their name, course and section
number, and follow the basic rules of email etiquette. Language should always be
respectful; if a student has a concern, such as with exams or grades, the
students must make an appointment to meet with the administrator or professor.
This meeting is required to be a calm and respectful interaction, or it can be
terminated at the discretion of the professor.
