Paired Passage Question
The United States military has a long history of intervening in
other countries’ affairs. For too long, it has been the policy of
our government to use the might and power of our armed forces
to influence foreign nations without any consideration for their
sovereignty or self-determination. This is completely unacceptable
and I believe that we need to take steps towards reducing US
intervention overseas and focus more on diplomacy as well as helping
developing countries build up their own capacity for security rather
than relying solely on American troops. We should be working
together with these nations instead of trying to control them from
afar through force alone - this approach only serves further destabilize
regions where peace is already fragile enough without outside
interference.
1
What would the authors agree on?
A
The authors of these paragraphs agree that the US should invade other
countries as preventative measures in order to protect itself from potential
threats while promoting peace.
B
Both would agree that diplomacy is more effective than military intervention when dealing with terrorism.
C
The authors would agree that traditional military intervention featuring
troops on the ground is not necessarily the best approach to all security
scenarios.
D
The writers support using force as a way to influence foreign nations in
ways that benefit both themselves and the United States, as a mutually
beneficial enterprise.
Text 2
It is critical that our nation focus on its own security. We must
ensure that our borders are secure and continue to invest in defense
capabilities so they remain strong enough to deter any potential
adversaries. In addition, we need a strategy for dealing with global
terrorism initiatives before they can flourish into real threats. Finally,
as technology advances at unprecedented rates across multiple
industries – including cybercrime – we must stay ahead of emerging
trends by investing more resources into researching new ways of
protecting ourselves against these growing threats both domestically
and abroad. By focusing on strengthening internal protection
measures while also maintaining awareness of external dangers,
America can be better positioned to defend itself now and in the
future.

Paired Passage Question
Almond milk is a great choice for those who are looking to improve
their health. It’s much lower in calories than regular dairy-based
milks, making it an ideal option for people trying to lose weight or
maintain a healthy body weight. Additionally, almond milk contains
no cholesterol and has significantly less saturated fat compared with
other types of animal-derived products like cow’s milk – this makes
it helpful when managing blood lipid levels as part of cardiovascular
disease prevention strategies. Almond Milk also provides several
important nutrients such as calcium and vitamin D! Finally, you can
use almond milk in just about any recipe requiring traditional dairy
options, alleviating animal cruelty and minimizing environmental
impact.
2
What would the author of the first paragraph likely think about the
second paragraph?
A
The author of the first paragraph would be indifferent to the second paragraph, as it does not address the cruelty of factory farming.
B
The author would applaud the stance taken in the second text and point to
his own text as a potential replacement product that could reduce factory
dairy farming.
C
The author of the first paragraph would likely be in support of the 2nd
paragraph’s position because of the inferior quality of cow’s milk compared
to almond milk.
D
The author of the first paragraph would consider the 2nd paragraph sensational and exaggerated.
Text 2
Factory farming is an abhorrent practice that needs to be stopped. It
involves the exploitation of animals, which are kept in overcrowded
and filthy conditions without access to natural environments or
behaviors they would otherwise enjoy if left undisturbed in nature.
These confined spaces lead to multiple diseases such as E-coli,
salmonella, swine flu and more due to unsanitary living quarters with
little ventilation or sunlight exposure. The cruel practices employed
by factory farms also cause tremendous amounts of animal suffering
through unnecessary mutilations like tail docking for pigs and
debeaking for chickens—all done without anesthesia! Factory farm
workers experience low wages, long hours (often unpaid), dangerous
working conditions all while having their rights violated daily on top
these unethical methods used towards innocent creatures. We must
take a stand against this unacceptable industry before it’s too late!

Paired Passage Question
China’s one-child policy is an innovative and praiseworthy approach
to population control that has had a lasting impact on the nation.
The implementation of this policy in 1979 was critical for China,
as it allowed them to successfully manage their rapidly expanding
population growth rate over the past 40 years. This enabled the
government to focus its resources more efficiently towards health
care, education, food security and poverty alleviation initiatives ultimately improving living standards overall throughout different
parts of Chinese society. As evidenced by recent reports from
UNICEF which show improvements in child mortality rates since
1980 due largely in part to effective family planning measures put into
action through this policy; we can see how successful implementing
such practices truly have been for China’s citizens now and well into
future generations.
3
What would the author of the second passage believe about the first
passage’s conclusion?
A
The author of the second passage would likely dispute the conclusion
because it only looked at the short-term impact of China’s policies.
B
The author would agree with the conclusion and suggest implementing
similar family planning measures to address global demographic decline
issues in other countries around the world.
C
The author would believe that implementation of China’s one child policy
was irrelevant for improving living standards throughout different parts
Chinese society over time.
D
The author of the second passage would acknowledge the immediate
impact of China’s policies on child mortality rates, but note that more
serious consequences would eventually arise.
Text 2
Global demographic decline is an issue that threatens our global
society in the 2020s. As people around the world are living longer
and having fewer children, population growth rates have slowed
significantly or even begun to shrink in some countries. This
phenomenon can be seen most notably among developed nations
such as Japan, but other developing regions like Europe may also feel
its effects soon if current trends continue. The shrinking population
size could lead to labor shortages and a reduced tax base for
governments, both of which will result in economic consequences
that must be addressed by policymakers worldwide. In addition
to this potential strain on economies, global demographic decline
carries with it social ramifications related to cultural continuity and
traditional values held within societies across different parts of the
globe

Paired Passage Question
Pets can provide us with so many benefits as companions. They
bring joy and unconditional love into our lives, providing a source of
comfort in times of stress or sadness. Pets also help to keep humans
active by encouraging regular walks and playtime which can lead to
improved physical health. Additionally, having pets around has been
found to reduce loneliness since they become an integral part of the
family unit within a household. Furthermore, research suggests that
pet owners experience lower levels of anxiety due their interaction
with animals compared those who do not have them - this is because
when we interact with our furry friends there’s often an increase
in oxytocin (the ‘feel good hormone’) released! All these positive
effects make it easy for anyone looking for some extra company or
distraction at home should consider getting themselves a loyal friend
from the animal kingdom!
4

Text 2
Having a healthy social life is invaluable to our overall wellbeing. It
provides us with the opportunity to build meaningful relationships, gain
support from peers and family members, cultivate empathy for others
and develop communication skills that are essential in everyday life.
Spending time engaging with those around us can help reduce stress
levels as we receive emotional validation through positive interactions;
this helps boost confidence while allowing ourselves room for selfexpression in an accepting environment. Through having supportive
networks of people surrounding us, it gives individuals the assurance
they need when facing challenging situations like work or personal
difficulties. Most importantly however is establishing trust between one
another which increases sense of belonging by providing comfort during
difficult times—making sure everyone has access to necessary resources
needed throughout their lives!

Paired Passage Question
A soda tax is an effective tool to reduce sugar consumption and
improve public health. It can incentivize people to make healthier
choices, while also generating revenue that can help fund important
programs such as healthcare or education initiatives. Studies have
found that taxes on sugary drinks result in reduced consumption
of these products; this means fewer cases of obesity, diabetes, heart
disease and other chronic illnesses. Furthermore, it encourages
companies to reformulate their beverages by reducing the amount
of calories per serving size - which helps further incentivize healthy
habits among consumers without drastically changing behaviors or
lifestyle choices overnight. Ultimately Soda Taxes are beneficial both
from a financial perspective (since they generate new revenues) but
also from a medical standpoint because it reduces long term costs
related to poor diets linked back directly towards beverage intake!
5
What would the two authors likely agree on?
A
The authors would agree that a soda tax is an example of big government
working in a positive way to benefit its citizens.
B
They would agree that soda companies are exploitative and deserve to be
taxed as a way to protect consumers from fradulent practices.
C
They would agree that a soda tax would likely hurt soda companies, resulting in less jobs and opportunities for the average person.
D
The authors would agree that big government taxes like a soda tax are
unethical since individuals should be allowed to make their own choices.
Text 2
Big government can be a force for good in many ways. It provides
essential services that people need to live healthy, safe and prosperous
lives – such as education, healthcare and infrastructure investment.
The presence of strong safety nets helps ensure basic human rights are
respected regardless of income level or social standing. Additionally,
big government plays an important role when it comes to regulating
private companies so they don’t take advantage of their customers by
providing faulty products or low wages without benefits; this protects
individuals from exploitation while helping the economy grow
sustainably over time due to increased consumer confidence.
