Why do you want to work at our company? I believe this job would be a really good fit for me as I enjoy the process of organizing. It isn’t a stressful job to do and it requires just enough mental activity where you can get your mind off of things. I don’t really mind the monotony of doing the same task for a long period of time because I usually do that at home anyways. I also like the environment of the library because I think its pretty calming and quiet. I usually go at least once a month and It’s pretty enjoyable to just walk around and browse through the books. Another reason I want to work at the library is the friendly environment. Most of the time when I go to the library the people who work there are really nice and one time they helped me pick out books for my little brother. I also just want to help out in the community, I don’t think I’m as involved as I should be and I feel if I worked at the library I could give back to the community. I think community is a big motivator because it feels like you're actually contributing to something important and it’s not pointless. I feel like working at the library will motivate me to keep on time and improve myself. I think working at the library would be a fun place to work at because you’re constantly moving and it isn’t a very loud place. Tell me about yourself? I’m a diligent student and I have a passion to learn new skills and ideas. In my free time I usually spend my time studying and keeping my grades up. When I don’t need to focus on school I like to learn topics that interest me personally and learn it by myself at home. I don’t have enough money to learn from courses and I usually do extensive research on the best ways to learn something. A couple of skills I have tried and am continuing to learn are Art, programming, learning a new language and music. Describe a time you failed? One time I failed is when I failed to take inniative and get to know my group members in a project. We are tasked with making a presentation and I had not grown a personal connection with my group which made it hard for us to talk to each other about who was going to do what. In the end our presentation ended up being too long as some members added in extra things as the project was already almost fully finished. From this experience I learned the importance of getting to know people personally and reaching out to others. What are your strengths? I think my biggest strength is my ability to learn things independently and quickly. I often pick things up quickly at school and I rarely need support. I also think I possess higher than average problem-solving skills as I took up Computer Science at my school and learn it continuously at home. Computer Science and programming requires a lot of out of the box thinking and planning to solve a problem. It does not require you to memorize a lot but it requires you to think through a problem step by step. Another strength I have is my attention to detail. I draw a lot in my free time and it requires me to look at various references which I can incorporate into my drawings. It’s important to look at all aspects of a photo so that you can get the most out of it such as the gesture, lighting, colors, form, perspective etc. What are your weaknesses? Weakness would be how I deal with stressful situations like being put on the spot. How would you talk to a customer who needed help? I would first ask how would you like me to help you? I would then listen to their concerns and ask myself If I am fully equipped with the knowledge of whether or not I should help them personally or should I contact someone else to handle their problem. I would then assess how much I should help them and understand their personal boundaries. For example if they are looking for a specific book I would ask if they would like to be personally led or point out the directions of where they should look. I think it’s important to make a customer feel comfortable and to not overstep my help What is your previous volunteer experience? I don’t have a lot of volunteer experience and a lot of the experience I do have was just before the pandemic started. One of the most recent volunteer experiences I tried was volunteering at the Edmonton food bank. I volunteered through our school's volunteer club, key club, and I worked with two other people packing hampers and sorting out food. We worked as a team and it was an overall fun experience. It was a pretty fast paced job and it required us to be aware of surroundings and also being able to pay attention to what the clients wanted. For example we needed to be careful of what food we were putting into their hampers as some hampers were vegan or halal which meant we needed to look through ingredients and expiry dates. Before covid I was involved in my own school’s volunteer group called PACT, and I helped plan school events and fundraisers. Our group would usually meet every week during lunch and I would sometimes help after school or early in the morning. I was usually involved in making posters and spreading information about the events. One event we were planning needed funding and support so we had to email various establishments near our schools about what they could offer to us. Me and two other members also went and directly spoke to different managers about what they could offer. Unfortunately the event was canceled due to COVID. Another experience I had while in PACT was volunteering at the Festival of Trees. I was in charge of my own stall where I had to lead another student who was younger than me to help as well. My stall was in charge of giving tattoos to children so it involved being friendly and talking to a lot of children.
