UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT Assignment no. 1 Semester Course MED2602 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN II DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING School of Engineering College of Science, Engineering & Technology Examiner: Mr. ROM Magabe Internal moderator: Mr. P Kruger External Moderator: Prof D Madyira Marks: 20 Weight of Assessment: 15% Time: 1 week MED2602 Project development Problem formulation The electro/hydraulic lift, commonly known as a two-post car lift, is designed mainly to lift cars during repairs or other under-carrier work, see figure 1. The lift is comprised of two symmetric vertical columns safely anchored to the ground. It is operated by an electric motor which controls a hydraulic pump to deliver hydraulic fluid to cylinders inbuilt in the vertical columns. This enables the lifting of two trolleys, one on each column, that in turn carry two swing arms each. You are the design engineer incharge of this project. You are expected to select the most appropriate section and materials for the swing arm design. Fig 1: A Two-Post car lifts system 2023 Assignment 1 requirements 1. Graduate attribute (GA 1) 2. Literature review and design inspiration ✓ History of equipment ✓ Existing product variations ✓ Locally manufacture vs international ✓ Material research and selection ✓ Existing material in their applications in the designs ✓ Factors to consider during design 7) Citations (Harvard) 8) List of references NOTE: Do an indebt research on this equipment with reasonably sized images. At least 10 pages of written work is to be submitted with a plagiarism of maximum 10%. The Turnitin report is required for submission. Use the graduate attribute as a guide for areas of interest in your project formulation (see Annexture A below). Use Annexture B for the formatting required for your project document. Total = 20 marks 2023 Annexture A (Graduate attribute) Graduate Attribute 1: Problem solving. Learning outcome: Demonstrate competence Identify, formulate, analyse and solve well-defined engineering problems Where is outcome assessed? How is this outcome assessed? What is satisfactory performance? What is the consequence of unsatisfactory performance? MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN 2 – MED2602 ✓ This Graduate Attribute is assessed through use of a comprehensive rubric to evaluate the following: ✓ Diagnose, then analyze a well-defined engineering problem; identify the criteria for an acceptable solution. ✓ Identify the necessary information and applicable engineering and other knowledge and skills. ✓ Generate and formulates possible approaches find a solution(s) for the problem. ✓ Simulate and analyze possible solutions. ✓ Evaluate possible solutions and selects best solution. ✓ Formulate and presents the solution in an appropriate form. ✓ Supply a solution for assessment either in hard format or as a modelled solution or in the form of an algorithm. ✓ Assessment compliance is evaluated by using a comprehensive rubric • Within the project the student must acceptably analyse a well-defined problem and then formulate possible approaches to solve the problem. • The student must then adequately defend a possible solution verbally and by simulation demonstration, using the appropriate engineering software/hardware. • Successful compliance is accomplished by demonstrating an adequate solution to the problem as per provided assessment rubric. • Students are allowed more than one opportunity to accomplish this as set out in the learner guide. • Obtaining a mark of 50% or higher equated as ‘Passing’ for the academic content does not mean compliance with the GA requirements. • As per the comprehensive rubric attached to the module, the student’s work requires satisfactory compliance in terms of Range Statement and Associated Assessment Criteria for the particular GA attached to the module. The consequence of an unsatisfactory performance and compliance regarding the Graduate Attribute (GA) attached to the module, is that even if the student obtains a mark of 50% or above for the academic assessment of the module (i.e. assessments marks and test mark) he / she will not pass the module unless the compliance with the GA is evaluated and the student is declared “competent”. This rule is strictly applied to the GA attached to the exit level modules. 2023 Annexture B (Report format) 1. Page format Set up your page margins as follows: Top – 3.5 cm, Bottom – 3 cm, Left = Right = 2.54 cm. 2. Font style Use either Arial or Times New Roman fonts with 12 point size. 3. General document layout • Let your text be justified throughout the report. • Space paragraphs and section titles by 12 points as shown in this document. • Use a 1.5 point line spacing as used in this document. • No tab spacing should be applied to the start of any paragraph. • Number the sections and subsections as: 1. Section 1.1 Subsection 1.1.1 Sub-subsection, etc. • Please do not underline section titles. Use bold-type for section titles, italics for the subsections and sub-subsections shown in the above line. • Tables and their captions must be centre-justified as in Table 1. All table captions must be placed at the top of the table and numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance in the report. Table 1. Table showing how tables are formatted and captioned Title Title Title 2023 • Figures and their captions must be centre-justified as in Figure 1. All figure captions must be placed at the bottom of the figure and numbered consecutively according to their order of appearance in the report. Figure 1. Figure showing how to set your document text to "justify". • Number all equations consecutively and enclose the number in brackets () as shown in Eq. (1). Ensure that the equations are right justified as shown below: 𝑦 𝑥 1 1 𝐴 = ∫𝑦 2 ∫𝑥 2 𝑥 2 𝑦 2 𝑑𝑥𝑑𝑦 • (1) Ideas of other authors must be cited within the text where they are being used and the sources must be appropriately listed in the References as shown below. Please read the Harvard style for guidance on the referencing style. In the main text: Ullman (2010) states that developing a concept into a product without prior effort on the earlier phases of the design process is like building a house with no foundation.
