Why revise qualifications?
We work closely with schools, universities, and ministries to make sure our qualifications offer the
best possible preparation for further study and employment. We review syllabuses on a regular
basis so that the content is up to date, the assessment is appropriate, and our syllabuses remain
highly regarded by universities and employers.
To help teachers plan ahead, we provide advance notice of changes to syllabuses at least one
year before first teaching. We publish this guide twice a year and it includes details about the
following types of changes.
Set texts & Set works
The words SET TEXTS next to a syllabus title indicate that the set texts in a syllabus have been
updated. Set texts regularly change in syllabuses and many change from one year of examination
to the next. Before you begin teaching, check the set text list in the syllabus for the year in which
your candidates will take their examinations. This also applies to set works. You should fully check
the updated syllabus, as there may be other changes in addition to the set text update. Any
additional changes will be detailed in the changes section of the syllabus and the update notice, if
applicable.
Revised syllabuses
There are syllabuses with significant changes following our review process. They may have
revised content and assessment models, updated set works or texts, new codes, or new titles.
Updated syllabuses
These are new versions of published syllabuses. They include syllabuses that have been
amended with minor changes outside of our review process, and syllabuses that are republished
for further years of assessment. When a syllabus is republished for further years of assessment, it
may have updated set texts or works or there may be minor updates to information in the syllabus.
New syllabuses
These are new subjects being offered for the first time, or syllabuses that have new syllabus codes
and titles.
Withdrawn syllabuses
These are syllabuses that have been withdrawn and will no longer be available. Information will
include the year of the last assessment of that qualification. The relevant syllabus page on our
website will indicate if there is an alternative syllabus available, for example if a syllabus is being
replaced by one with a new code.
Information on series and availability
These are syllabuses that are either available in a particular series, for a particular administrative
zone, or those where the series availability has changed.
