VI.
Deepening of the Lesson
Now, for you to be able to fully understand
our discussion, let us go back to what the
video lesson has presented to us.
First, let us define the word, connotation.
Connotation is a feeling or idea that a word
has. Whereas denotation is the precise,
literal definition of a word that might be
found in a dictionary.
,Sometimes, words have the same basic
definitions, but have different connotations.
Class, the two types of connotations are
namely, Positive and Negative connotation.
Positive connotation implies positive
emotions and associations.
Kindly read the example.
This phrase has a positive association
“the aroma of my grandmother’s
cooking”
because the word “aroma” implies that the
smell is pleasing and inviting.
Positive messages focus on the type of
communication that provides good news,
acceptance, or congratulations.
The second type is negative connotation
which implies negative emotions and
associations.
Going back to the presented example earlier
which is “the aroma of my grandmother’s
cooking,” what will happen if we exchange
the word “aroma” with the word “stench,”
then the phrase becomes “the stench of my
grandmother’s cooking.” Even if the words,
aroma and stench have a negative
connotation, thus, the meal sounds much
less appealing.
VII.
I DO/Modelling
At this point, let us together
answer the following activity in
order to test your knowledge
about our lesson.
Directions: Determine whether
the underlined words in the
sentences denote positive or
negative denotation.
What do you think is the answer
question number 1?
in
The answer is negative connotation,
ma’am.
1. It was hard to ignore the
baby’s disturbing screams.
Great! The answer is
negative connotation because
it implies that the baby’s
scream is annoying. It is
better to use the word loud in
the sentence.
How about item number
two?
2. Jackie wore a retro-inspired
dress to the party.
Precisely! It is positive because retro
clothes don’t refer to a specific time period
during which they were created. Instead,
“retro” relates to the style in which the
items are made.
The answer is positive connotation,
ma’am.
Let’s proceed to item number 3.
3. Dexter was a
conversationalist person.
The word suggests a positive
connotation, ma’am.
Exactly! The underlined may
mean a person who loves to
start a conversation or a
person who is good in
talking to different kinds of
people.
How about the next item?
4. She is a chubby person.
The answer is positive connotation,
ma’am.
Excellent! A chubby person is slightly
overweight, somewhat fat and hence soft. If
we are going to use the word fat in the
sentence, it will imply a negative
description to the person and can be
perceived as an offensive word.
How about the last item?
5. The slender girl made her
way to the water.
The answer is positive connotation
ma’am.
You are indeed correct! Slender implies a
generally attractive and pleasing thinness.
Are there any questions, class?
None, ma’am.
