What a view!
Dubai is certainly one of the most well-known cities in
the Middle East. Located in the United Arab Emirates, it is
a glittering jewel of a city in the otherwise sandy desert.
One of the reasons the city ‘glitters’ is because of its
extravagant construction projects. It’s certainly easy to
call Dubai a ‘tall’ city, because it has some of the world’s
tallest buildings.
Burj Khalifa is one of the tallest man-made structures
in the world. Construction began in 2004 and the building
opened in January 2010. Burj Khalifa is an amazing 828
metre high building! Most of the really tall skyscrapers are
only used as office buildings, but Burj Khalifa has also
got residential flats! The skyscraper is groundbreaking in
many ways. It is the building with the most floors (180),
the highest swimming pool in the world, the highest
observation deck, and the first Armani hotel anywhere in
the world. The hotel takes up 15 floors in the lower part of
the building. Burj Khalifa also has the highest lift system in
the world, as well as the fastest. You can take any of the
57 lifts from the first floor and be on the 124th floor in about
60 seconds. The building can hold around 35,000 people
at a time! There are also several ‘sky lobbies’ where people
can see the amazing panoramic views for many kilometres
from special digital binoculars.
Burj Khalifa is located in a part of the city known as
Downtown Burj Khalifa. This area is a large-scale real
estate project that includes parks, hotels, entertainment
venues and beautiful man-made ponds and fountains. In

fact, the same people who
made the Dubai Fountain,
also made fountains for
resorts and casinos in Las
Vegas. The fountain has got
lights and can shoot water
almost 150 metres into the
air. It’s over 275 metres
long; that’s more than the
length of two football fields!
It’s so large that people
can see it from about 30
kilometres away on a clear
day. Also, in Downtown
Burj Khalifa there is the
Dubai Mall, the largest
shopping mall in the world.
Nearby is the Burj Al Arab
hotel, the world’s second
largest hotel. This magnificent hotel sits on a man-made
island and looks like a ship’s sail. Dubai has got other tall
hotels too, including the Rose Tower, a 72-storey building
(333m) and the world’s tallest building used exclusively
as a hotel. In fact, Dubai boasts four of the world’s five
tallest hotels. With Rose Tower in the first place, Burj Al
Arab in the second, Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel and
The Address Downtown Burj Khalifa following in the list, it
must be hard to decide which to visit. No matter where you
go, the view is great!
4. What isn’t true about the Dubai Fountain?
a. You can see it from very far away.
b. It was created by people who made similar
structures.

More than just a pet
Have you ever thought that your pet has the potential to be a hero? Think about it the next time you are
playing fetch with your dog, or you watch your cat sleeping. Your beloved pet might just be the next hero on
the evening news.
DOGS
These animals are more than just man’s best friend. Sometimes they are even used during
times of war. (1)
Today, dogs are commonly used in search and rescue missions. This is
particularly the case during disasters when the dogs help to find missing people. There are a
couple of ways that dogs can find missing people, but they all involve the dog’s sense of smell.
Some dogs are trained to ‘airscent’. They raise their heads to the air and try to locate a person
by the smell carried in the air. These dogs are trained to sniff out a general human scent, not a
specific person. They are also used by the military and police as ‘bomb sniffing’ dogs, because
they can smell certain chemicals used in explosives.
Another type of search method is ‘trailing’ or ‘tracking’. (2)
In these cases, the dogs
are usually searching for someone specific and have an item that belonged to the person they
are looking for so they can know what the person’s specific scent smells like. Some dogs can be
used for specific types of searches. For example, some dogs are trained to find people under
water or snow, or people who are. Some animals are even trained to give a response to their
handler when they find a person. (3)
They also have different reactions when they find the
scent of the person, but not the person themselves. The dog and the handler need to have a
good relationship so that the handler can understand these cues from the dog.
PIGEONS
These birds have a very long history as tools of communication. Several ancient civilisations
used pigeons to carry messages, such as the Persians, Greeks and Romans. (4)
Pigeons
were an effective way to communicate information in modern times, too. Before inventions like
the telegraph and phone, pigeons would carry time sensitive information like financial and stock
news. In fact, stock information travelled from London all the way to Paris by way of the carrier
pigeon! In the 1800s, the Pigeon Post was created to carry small pieces of mail and news long
distances. The official mail system meant that each pigeon was registered by their government,
just like a postal worker is today. The pigeon post even had its own stamps!
A. The dog might jump up in the air if they find a person alive, or sit down if they find someone who is dead.
B. They were also a crucial part of military strategy during war because pigeons were used during nearly every
major war in history.
C. He is the most famous military dog.
D. Many dogs received medals and were even promoted to the rank of an officer for their services.
E. The Greeks used pigeons to spread news of the winners at the Olympic games and the Romans used them to
send messages about the outcomes of battles.
F. Dogs that use this method smell the ground and look for clues like footprints and broken twigs or grass.

Pigeons weren’t just famous letter carriers. (5)
Homing pigeons were widely used for
carrying secret messages from one unit to another, across very long distances. The pigeons were
able to travel from country to country and relay the messages with no trouble. The pigeons carried
their messages in many dangerous places with extreme weather conditions, like deserts, the
frozen arctic and jungles and many pigeons were injured while carrying through their messages.
However, this didn’t stop them from getting home and completing the mission successfully. For
this reason, many pigeons received medals for their service. One of the medals, the The Dicken
Medal, was created specifically for animals which perform heroic acts during wartime.

BILLION DOLLAR IDEAS
Mark Zuckerberg is best known as one of the creators of the
highly successful social networking site, Facebook. Zuckerberg had
been interested in computers from a very early age. He created
his first computer program when he was in high school. In fact, he
became so well-known, that both AOL and Microsoft asked him to work for them but Zuckerberg decided
that he would rather go to college, so he went to Harvard. It was while he was at Harvard that he and
his roommate created Facebook.
The idea of Facebook came from the actual facebooks that many colleges use with students’ names
and pictures. Zuckerberg took the idea of the college yearbook, and computerised it so that it was on
the Web. The idea spread to other colleges across the US and became very popular in a short amount of
time. Since Facebook started in 2004, the website has added many new and exciting features including
games and applications. Today, Facebook has over 400 million users worldwide, and Zuckerman has
proved himself quite the businessman, becoming a billionaire in his early twenties. There is even a film
based on the creation of Facebook starring Justin Timberlake.

YouTube is a very popular video sharing website created by Chad Hurley,
Steve Chen and Jawed Karim in 2005. In only about a year and a half of the
site being online, the creative team sold it to Google for almost 2 billion
dollars, making the three founders billionaires in their mid-twenties.
The company was founded in a small office above a pizza restaurant and
a Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. The three founders created
the website because they wanted an easy way to share large video files
with each other online. At that time, it was impossible to send such a large
file through e-mail and there weren’t any other free websites that existed
which allowed posting videos. It’s well-known that YouTube started with
just one video: Me at the zoo. It’s a short clip of founder Jawed Karim at
the San Diego Zoo that can still be found on the site today. This early post
paved the way for all other videos to come and showed that anyone could
upload simple moments from everyday life for the whole world to see. The
website grew very fast, and within the first 8 months of operation, more
than 65,000 videos were uploaded every day. YouTube is so popular that
its daily bandwidth cost is around one million dollars. It’s currently number
four in the list of the most visited websites and has an estimated one
billion views per day all over the world. Today, the YouTube offices have
moved from a tiny office above a couple of restaurants to its own large
office building in San Bruno, California. Now, YouTube is as popular as ever,
and getting better each day.
1. Mark Zuckerberg started working for Microsoft when he was a college student.
2. Mark Zuckerberg graduated from Harvard.
3. Mark Zuckerberg acted in a movie about his life.
4. YouTube was created by a group of people.
5. The founders of YouTube spent about one million dollars for their new office.

These days, people are very concerned about how they can help the environment. Agritourism
is a great way to give back to the environment, and have fun at the same time. (1)
Its main goal
is for the tourist to become a part of the land and local culture without damaging it. Popular venues
for Agritourism are farms or ranches. (2)
Few tourist destinations offer an eco-friendly option
for visitors. This makes Agritourism a popular option for people who want to make a change to the
environment.
People who choose farms or vineyards for their holiday destination get to relax in the natural
splendour of the area, but also do work that is meaningful and rewarding. (3)
In fact, on many
farms you can also take some fruit and vegetables home with you. Or, if you do arts and crafts, such as
carving a wooden statue, you get to keep it. (4)
When choosing a ranch, tourists get to learn a lot about how to take
care of animals, like cows or horses. Many ranch owners love having
agri-tourists. (5)
Last but not least, agri-tourists become more health
conscious and have the opportunity to find out where the food they
consume comes from.
A. It gives them a chance to show people what they do on their ranches, as well as having them help out with the
tasks they have to do.
B. This way, people are able to experience nature and farm animals first-hand.
C. Sometimes tourists also organise exhibitions with some of the things they make during their holidays.
D. Some of the activities include planting flowers and vegetables, landscaping, picking fruit from trees and doing
arts and crafts.
E. Agritourism is a branch of ecotourism where people go on holiday that do as little harm to the environment as
possible.
F. Other common activities include tasting local food and recipes, going hiking and horse riding, as well as
learning about local environmental issues.

Can you believe it?
Ripley’s Believe it or Not! is an entertainment franchise started in 1918 by
Robert Ripley. The line ‘believe it or not’ comes from the doubt that people had when
they first saw Ripley’s strange collections. 1.
He loved travelling all over the world and finding strange
things. He took a lot of photos and made many notes and drawings to remember the strange things he saw.
Common topics in Ripley’s! were amazing sports records, little known facts about far away destinations
and other items that readers of the comic had sent in to Ripley to read about. 2.
Typically, it might be
something like an odd looking vegetable, a strange trick a person could do, or an animal with odd markings
on its fur. Ripley even managed to find strange and unbelievable creatures, like a ‘mermaid’ or a farm
animal with an extra leg or two heads.
Ripley took these descriptions and pictures and drew his own images and printed
them in his comic. 3.
After that, he also started a cartoon for children and several
TV programmes that had famous hosts who presented a variety of the strange material
that Ripley loved to talk about so much. He even was the first person to publish a very
early drawing of the dog that inspired the comic character ‘Snoopy’ created by the
cartoonist, Charles Schulz, who wrote the Peanuts Comics. 4.
Copyright © MM Publications
Today, the Ripley’s company owns 35 museums in cities all over the world,
called ‘odditoriums’. 5.
One of the most impressive is the museum in Panama
City Beach, Florida, which is shaped like a giant boat that’s sinking into the water!
Ripley’s also owns cinemas, and many other entertainment venues. They even own
several aquariums, and, in fact, the Ripley’s aquarium in Gatlinburg, Tennessee has
the longest underwater tunnel in the world.
30
A.
He told Ripley about his amazing dog that did strange things, like eating pieces
of glass without getting hurt.
B.
Several of the museums look as though they are breaking into pieces because of an
earthquake.
C.
Ripley would be very happy to see that his company, Ripley Entertainment has done so well.
D.
The comic was so popular that, eventually, he started a radio show of the same name.
E.
These could be any sort of strange or interesting item from all over the U.S.
F.
Ripley started the company by creating a comic book where he talked about and showed
pictures of odd artefacts.

the boxes.
IT’S A HYBRID WORLD
The wave of the future in automobiles is definitely the hybrid. Hybrids are vehicles
that use a combination of petrol and battery power to run, making them very fuel efficient
and better for the environment. Hybrids use much less petrol than a regular car and emit
virtually no toxic air, which is a vast improvement for anti-pollution measures. This feature
is also good for people with respiratory problems and other illnesses. Hybrids conserve
energy. For instance, when the car is stopped, it shuts down everything that isn’t essential
to save the battery power, and when the owner wants the car to ‘wake up’, they simply hit
the accelerator. This unique feature makes a hybrid an extremely quiet car to be in, which
is one of the first things people notice when riding in one.
A well-known hybrid car is the Prius. The Prius, made by Toyota was introduced in
Japan in 1997, and after that they were released worldwide. Today, these fuel-efficient cars
have become a common sight on roads. Other companies have made competing versions
of hybrid cars, such as the Honda Insight, and the first hybrid SUV, the Ford Escape. One
of the newest vehicles to join the hybrid family is the Persu hybrid. The Persu is a threewheeled vehicle, making it stand out from the rest of the hybrids. The Persu drives like a
car, but looks like a motorbike. There is a driver’s seat with a passenger’s seat directly
behind it and a small boot space. The Persu can achieve an amazing 120km per
gallon, which outperforms almost every car on the market at the time of speaking.
Right now, other kinds of vehicles are being developed with hybrid
technology. Just a few include ships, buses, military vehicles, trains
and even some types of aircraft. It’s definitely an exciting time for
developments in the automotive industry.
2. Hybrid vehicles use environmentally-friendly petrol.
3. Most people with health problems prefer to buy hybrids.
4. You can start the engine of a hybrid by just hitting the accelerator.
5. When the Prius was first released, a lot of Japanese people bought it.
6. One type of hybrid vehicle looks like a motorbike.

HAND
People love gadgets. In today’s modern world, it seems like there is a gadget for
everything. Gadgets are getting smaller and smaller and you can control almost
everything you need right from your hand. The following are a couple of the most
popular gadgets that people are crazy about.
KINDLE
The Amazon Kindle is an electronic reading device created by amazon.com in 2007.
The Kindle is about the same size of a small paperback, but the big difference is
that, instead of having only one book with you, in this gadget you can store around
1500 or 3500 books, depending on which model you have. Users can purchase the
‘book’, or file of the book’s text from Amazon’s website for a small fee. You download
the file and load it on your Kindle. At first, there were only around 80,000 digital
titles available for downloading but today, there are over 300,000. Users can also
subscribe to magazines and newspapers for a monthly fee, some as low as 0.92
euros per month. The Kindle has got web capabilities, so users can surf the Net
while reading, as well as listen to MP3s. Today, many authors are promoting the
Kindle by releasing chapters of their novels or entire novels for free to download for
a Kindle device. In this way, the Kindle online store is becoming a lot like the iTunes
store, with its special promotions and features.
1. Which of the sentences is true about the Amazon
Kindle?
a. Users download books using the Amazon Kindle.
b. Users can store up to 1,500 books in the Amazon
Kindle.

The Flip Video is a very small
digital camcorder made by
Pure Digital Technologies. The
earliest model of the Flip Video
came out in 2006, but the Flip
Ultra, released in 2007, is much
more well-known. The Flip
Ultra is popular because it is
so small and light which makes
it extremely easy to carry. The
camera also comes in a variety of colours and has
got many accessories, including an underwater case
(for shooting underwater video), a tripod and even
a bicycle helmet attachment for those who want to
shoot a video while cycling. Some models come in High
Definition format and use recyclable batteries, while
other models use regular AA batteries. Each camera
has a hidden USB stick that pops out to connect it with
a computer easily, eliminating the need for any cables
or wires. Depending on which model you choose, you
can have a storage space of up to 8 gigabytes, which
allows for several hours of video footage. Flip Videos
are popular because they are so easy to use and are
compatible with many online networking sites and
video-sharing sites like YouTube. Gadgets like these
show us that the wave of the future will be controlled
right from our hands!

WACKY PHOBIAS!
We asked and you responded: tell us your strangest phobias!
We know a lot of people are afraid of heights or closed spaces,
but what are some really weird things to be afraid of?
John - Koumpounophobia
Ever since I was little I have been afraid of
sharks. I know that a lot of people are afraid
of sharks, and that’s not a strange phobia, but
I am actually just afraid of pictures of sharks. I
can’t open a National Geographic or any other
wildlife magazine without getting nervous. It’s
even worse when the shark has its mouth
open in the picture. I feel like the shark can
still bite me. One time, while I was reading a
magazine in the library, I turned the page and
there was a big picture of a shark! The worst
part is that when my hand turned the page,
my fingers were actually touching the picture.
I screamed and threw the magazine across
the room. Everybody laughed and I was
really embarrassed. Oddly enough, sharks in
aquariums or zoos don’t bother me at all.
Daniel - Oneirophobia
Have you ever known anyone
who was afraid to go to sleep?
Well, now you have! That’s a
little misleading though, as I’m
not actually afraid of sleeping,
I’m afraid of dreaming. It’s not
like I’m afraid of nightmares
or something, I just don’t like the idea of dreaming at all. It
feels like you completely lose control of your own mind when
you’re dreaming, and I don’t like that, even if it’s a good dream.
Usually, when I go to bed and I feel myself
starting to fall asleep, I get a panic attack,
1. My phobia is food-related.
and my heart starts racing. Sometimes I even
feel like I will be sick! It is a serious problem,
2. I’ve visited a therapist to help me deal with my phobia.
because it’s very unhealthy to go without sleep.
3. My phobia influences what I wear.
I’ve tried everything to make myself really tired
when I try to sleep, drinking warm milk, herbal
4. My phobia made me feel very uncomfortable once.
sleeping aids, even therapy! A friend suggested
5. I have tried to cure my phobia.
hypnotherapy, so I think I will try that. I really do
want to sleep, it’s just impossible.
6. I’ve had a couple of accidents because of my phobia.

Carrie – Selachophobia
I am absolutely terrified of buttons. I don’t
mind wooden buttons or something like
that, it’s the plastic ones I can’t stand.
Unfortunately, most of the buttons out there are made of plastic.
I can’t look at them, I hate touching them, I don’t even like talking
about them! Most people think it’s really hard to live without
buttons, but it’s actually not. I dress quite casually anyway, so I
just wear T-shirts and stuff. It used to really upset me as a child,
watching my grandma sew a button on a shirt. She would always
hold it in her mouth, as she was getting ready to sew it on. That
used to drive me crazy! I thought it was the most disgusting thing
in the world! The worst is when I see a button that has a little
bit of the thread that’s loose and hanging down. That makes me
want to run out of the room!

Aim: to practise the Present Simple and indirect questions
• Have Ss work in pairs. Explain to Ss that they should look at the brochures of the two places and they should
discuss about where to spend their Saturday afternoon.
Example
A: Where do you want to go this Saturday?
B: The Jungle Park is a good idea. It opens every day and it only costs 18 euros.
A: Oh, yes. We can climb up a tree and feel like we’re in the jungle. I like that.
B: Yes, but could you tell what we’re going to eat?
A: Right. There are no restaurants there. Well, we can eat afterwards. I don’t mind.
B: OK, then.

Suggested Answer
It was a sunny day and Paul was in his car with his family. They wanted to spend a weekend in the countryside.
Suddenly, as he was driving, a truck blocked their way. Paul tried not to crash into it but, unfortunately, the car
got out of the road. It fell into a lake. Paul’s older son was hurt. There was blood all over his head and he was
unconscious. Paul got out of the car, but the rest of the family couldn’t. They were trapped. He used his mobile
phone to call for help so that somebody can come and rescue them. His wife and his younger son were in a panic
and they were crying. Fortunately, a man came from a nearby petrol station and he helped Paul pull his family
out of the car. Half an hour later, the ambulance came and took them to hospital.

Aim: to practise the Past Simple and the Past Progressive, speculate about the missing parts of a comic strip
and narrate a story.
• Divide Ss into pairs and explain to them that each pair should try to imagine what happened in the pictures
with the question marks. Tell them that there are no right or wrong speculations.
• Then, using the words in the box, they should try and narrate the story with: ‘It was a sunny day and Paul was
in his car with his family. They wanted to spend a weekend in the countryside’. Remind Ss that they should be
using the Past Simple/Past Progressive along with linking words.
• Choose a few pairs to tell their version of the story.

• Draw Ss attention to the box and tell them that they can use some of the words in it or their own ideas.
Example
A: Well, I remember once, I was in the park, reading my book under a tree and relaxing. There was a strange man
sitting near me. He was looking at me and smiling. I thought I knew him so I stood up to go and say hi. The
moment I turned around he was gone. I asked the children who were playing nearby where the guy went, but
they looked surprised. ‘There wasn’t anyone here’, they said. I think it was just my imagination.
