As a result, they may be operated at higher speeds with less internal friction and heat generation. Ball thrust bearings can tolerate greater misalignment and occupy less design space than roller thrust bearings. Moderate radial loads can be accomodated with some designs. Ball thrust bearings are suitable for light, medium to heavy-duty applica tions with high thrust loads and precision running requirements. Typical applications include: ● Machine Spindles ● Pumps ● Valves ● ● Kingpins Aircraft propellers ● Axial valve fans ● ● ● ● Drilling heads Rotary tables Material-handling equipment Indexing tables Standard size ranges, .188" ID through 30" OD. Metric sizes also available. Standard configurations include: self-aligning; onepiece banded (inside or outside); flat seat-flat race; flat seat grooved race; single and/or double-direction thrust bearings. Materials: Thru-hardened orcase hardened steels in races, plates and balls. Bronze, stamped steel or nylon retainers are standard. Standard or precision tolerances are available. CYLINDRICAL ROLLER THRUST BEARINGS Cylindrical Roller thrust bearings have a comparatively large contact area between the roller and raceway. They can support greater loads and accommodate much more shock than ball thrust bearings of a similar size. Cylindrical Roller Thrust Bear ings are suitable for medium to heavy-duty applications with high thrust loads and low operating coefficient of friction require ments. Fully-machined bronze retainers are standard (others available). Typical applications include: ● Extruders ● Crushers/pulverizers ● Crane hooks ● Machine tool equipment ● ● ● ● Construction equipment Food processing machinery Rotary Tables Special Equipment Standard series in Light, Medium and Heavy-Duty cross section, .875" ID through 30" OD. Medium and Heavy-Duty series avail able In self-aligning configuration. OD Banded Standard Crane Hook series also available. Materials: Case-hardened or thru- hardened races and rollers. Bronze retainers in larger sizes fea ture staggered, multiple rollers for optimum wear and life. ●§w>J TMtJM # § PRODUCT PROFILE TAPERED ROLLER THRUST BEARINGS Tapered roller thrust bearings have precision matched flange and rolling contact surfaces for accurate rolling guidance. True rol ling motion of the rollers results in low internal friction and low heat generation under high loads. Tapered Roller Thrust Bear ings are suitable for Heavy-Duty applications with high thrust loads, low to moderate speeds. Maximum capacity, full comple ment versions also available. Typical applications include: ● ● ● Oilfield swivels Crane hooks Refiners ● Extruders/Injection Molding ● Rolling mill screw downs ● Piercing mill thrust blocks Standard series is Heavy-Duty cross section, 3” ID to 24" 00, available for both OEM and replacement. Materials: Casehardened and thru-hardened races and rollers. Bronze retainers are standard. I i CUSTOM BEARING ASSEMBLIES To assist design engineers to achieve desired performance levels custom bearing assemblies are often the answer. Andrews can design for light, medium or heavy-duty applications, which may require integration ofcomponents, combined radial and thrust capabi lities with maximum capacity and minimum cross section, special materials and tolerances. Typical applications include: ● Oilfield equipment— ● ● ● Special washers and plates ● ● Wobble plate assemblies ● pumps, swivels Special equipment Aircraft equipment Military applications Medical equipment Designed for specific customer applications in sizes .250" ID through 30" OD. Custom features include: Special tolerances: special materials(stainless steel, M-50, etc.): combinationradial and thrust bearings: large size radial bearings: hardened and ground thrust plates (with or without grooves): integrated as semblies: and double-direction ball and roller thrust bearings. f4. 2 - I BEARING BASICS LOAD AND SPEED Bearings are affected by load and speed. There is a specific, expected service life for a given load and speed. The service life is determined statistically from tests of sample bearings and generally selected on a basis of a 10 percent failure rate (90 percent reliability). The result is called the L10 life. Friction Coefficient Values (Approximate) Ball Thrust Bearings = .0015 Cylindrical RollerThrust Bearings Tapered Roller Thrust Bearings = .008 = .002 These Friction Coefficient Values apply to bearings operating under normal conditions with adequate provisionsfor lubrication. The life-load relationshipforball and rollerbearings is explained in the “Bearing Ratings and Life" and "Bearing Life Calculations” sections of this catalog. Roller bearings, size forsize.generaily have a higher load capacity than ball bearings. They are well suited to supporting heavy loads at lower speeds. Bearings can be vulnerable to severe impact loads. Resistance to impact depends upon the reserve capacity in the bearing. Proper bearing selection and application can be made to sustain high impact. DEFLECTION Bearings exhibit different degrees of stiffness de pending on type, mounting, loads and speed. De flection at the bearing, or at the load point in the bearing-shaft-housing system, is often important, especially in machine tools and other precision equipment. In typical applications, ball and roller thrust bearJngs are used to provide precise shaft positioning. Thrust bearings exhibit much greater stiffness com pared with radial bearings loaded in thrust. Ball thrust bearings are exceptionally rigid when preloaded. FRICTION The losses due to friction in an antifriction bearing are essentially negligible and are usually ignored in calculating the operating efficiency of a mechanism. LIMITING SPEED The maximum permissible speed at which a bearing operates is affected by the bearing size, internal design, loading, lubrication and operating tempera ture. The principal factor limiting bearing speed is the effective operating temperatureof the lubricant. The lubricating qualities of most lubricants begin to deteriorate at approximately 200 degrees Fahren heit which can impair bearing performance. Limiting speeds for ball thrust bearings are listed in the catalog and apply to normal operating condi tions having oil bath or drip feed systems. Limiting speeds should be reduced by fifty percent (50 %) when grease lubrication is used. At high speeds, grooved ball thrust bearings may require a minimum applied thrust load. This min imum load is necessary to overcome the effects of centrifugal forces of the bail and the resulting adverse affects on bearing performance. Limiting speeds for roller thrust bearings for most applications can be provided by Andrews Engineer¬ ing. With high speed operation, special provisions must be made to remove sufficient heat from a bearing and its environment to keep the temperature of the lubricant within acceptable limits. Circulating oil, oil cooling systems, special housing designs and oil mist systems should be considered. In some instances, however, the friction coefficient of a bearing may be required. Consult Andrews Engineering for technical assist ance with applications where deflection, friction or The friction coefficient of a bearing depends largely on bearing design, load, speed, surface finish, temperatureand lubrication. Many of the variables are not easily defined. A single, approximate coeffi cient value may be applied to each type of bearing without introducing a large calculation error. speed are of concern. 3 \ BEARING DESIGN The bronze retainer (M) is fully machined from THRUST BEARING COMPONENTS Andrews bearings satisfy the requirementsof a wide range of applications. The following outline of Andrews bearing designs, retainer types, materials, precision and nomenclature will help with the selec centrifugally cast bronze which separates and re tains the balls. It will generally perform better than other retainers underextreme operatingconditionssuch as marginal lubrication or in the presence of contamination. The bronze retainer is cost effective tion process. in lower volume. Thrust bearings have four (4) basic components: The steel retainer (J) is stamped from low carbon steel. Flanges of the window type retainer are curled or rolled to provide ball retention. The thin cross section is strong yet light weight. The steel retainer has a large capacity for grease storage within the bearing permitting longer intervals between bearing two (2) thrust washers, typically a small bore washer and a large bore washer; balls or rollers and a retainer (figure 1). Washer I relubrication. Retainer Washer HUSO Roller Thrust Ball Thrust The nylon retainer (N) is injection molded with fully contoured ball pockets. The light weight retainer performs well under a variety of conditions but should not be used in high temperatures. The nylon retainer is most cost effective in high volume. Banded Ball Thrust Bearing assemblies of maximum capacity design (FC), without retainers, are avail able to accommodate heavy loads. Bearing Components The hardened thrust washers and rolling elements carry the bearing load. Ball thrust bearing retainers hold and separate the balls. Retainers in roller thrust bearings are required to guide and separate the rollers. On some series a band holds the assembly together, retains the lubricant and/or shields the bearing from harmful contaminants. Retainers for cylindrical roller and tapered roller thrust bearings are machined from cast bronze. 1 1 Bronze - M BEARING RETAINERS Roller Thrust Bearing Retainers Andrews thrust bearings are manufactured using a wide variety of retainer styles and materials which satisfy the performance and cost requirements of the many applicationswhere they are used. Retainers for ball thrust bearings in this catalog are available as machined bronze, stamped steel, or molded nylon. Phenolic isalsoavailable. Each is ball riding and provides full ball retention. Bronze - (M) Steel - (J) Nylon - (N) Ball Thrust Bearing Retainers Cylindrical roller thrust bearings have roller riding retainers with accurately machined, contoured roller pockets. A steel band around the retainer secures the roller assembly. Tapered roller thrust bearings have flange riding retainers with accurately machined pads in each pocket to guide and separate every roller. Higher capacity, full complementtapered roller thrust bear ings without retainer, are also available. Various retainer designs and materialsare available to meet the particularneeds of almostevery applica tion. Bearing type, operating speed, loading, mount ing, lubrication, temperature, volume and cost all affect retainer performance and design. Consult Andrews Engineering for assistance with retainer selection. 4 i t BEARING DESIGN BEARING PRECISION The term "bearing class” generally identifies the var ious levels of precision to which a bearing is manu factured. The terms "commercial”, "industriar, and “industrial precision”are sometimes used to identify the grade of bearing. The bearings listed in this catalog are manufactured to industry standard tolerances established by the Antifriction Bearing Manufacturers Association (AFBMA) and the International Standards Organiza tion (ISO). Special precision bearings are available to satisfy the requirements of most applications. Total bearing axial runout, checked by the method shown in Figure 3, is a measure of the total perfor mance of the thrust bearing assembly at a specified load. At less than the specified load, axial runout is affected by runout and flatness of the thrust washers. Thrust washer flatness greatly affects bearing per formance under light or no-load conditions. Nomi nal washer out-of-flatness will usually flatten under normal loading due to the resilience of the washer material. Several applications do not require the precision tolerances associated with AFBMA or ISO stand ards. Commercial quality bearings are available as cost effective alternatives. Axial runout is the variation in thick ness of a thrust washer or the variation in the thick ness from the bottom of the ball groove to the backface of the washer. The accepted method for measur ing washer axial runout is shown in Figure 2. Often the bearing that is required can be selected from this catalog. Many times an off-the-shelf bearing with only minor modi fications will perform properly in a custom appli cation. However, a bearing is a precision component which must fulfill application parameters. In many instan ces, a completely custom bearing or assembly is required to satisfy all operating conditions. Andrews has the experience and expertise to custom design bearings to meet those special needs. Whether the need is for a custom configuration or special materials: whether the design objective is for greater precision, extended service life, severe loads or ease of assembly, maintenance or repair: Andrews Engineering welcomes the opportunity to assist with the proper bearing design. The ratings are calculated in accordance These conditions must be reasonably satisfied otherwise the actual bearing life experienced may be considerably below that indicated by the Dyna mic load rating. with standards established by the Antifriction Bear- ing Manufacturers Association (AFBMA). Material factors have been applied where appro priate in this catalog. DYNAMIC LOAD RATING The Dynamic Load Rating (Ca) for a thrust bearing is the calculated, constant, centricthrustload that a group of apparently identical bearings can endure for an L10 life of 1,000,000 revolutions of one thrust washer. The Dynamic Load Rating should be treated as a reference value since dynamic loading of that magnitude can cause localized plastic deformation of the contact surfaces. STATIC LOAD RATING The Static Load Rating (Coa) is the maximum per missible centric thrust load that can be applied to a non rotating bearing without significantly impairing the operating smoothness or friction level of the bearing. The catalog values for Static Load Rating are based upon a maximum contact stress of 580,000 psi (4,000 MPa). Bearings subjected to static loads of this magnitude will experience no appreciable reduction in calculated L10 life. Different static load limits may be applied for smoothness of operation, friction and sound level depending on design re quirements and experience. OPERATING CONDITIONS Dynamic Load Rating and L10 Life calculations are based upon ideal operating conditions. The follow ing assumptions are made: The thrust load is con stant and applied coincident with the axis of the bearing: the lubrication is adequate for the load, speed and temperature; the mounting is proper with accurately machined locating surfaces: the envir onment is clean and sealed from contaminants and abrasives; and the operating extremes have been BEARING LIFE Bearing life is the number of revolutions or length of time a bearing is expected to operate under defined load and speed conditions before fatigue of the roll ing contact surfaces occurs. While it is not possible to precisely determine the life of a single bearing, a group of apparently identical bearings operating under similar conditions exhibits a stable, predictable life pattern. Thus it is possible to predict, with statistical probability, that any bear ing in a group of bearings will reach or exceed a particular life before fatigue failure occurs. The L10 lifeor“Rating Life” of a bearing isdefinedas ' the life in revolutions or hours that 90 percent of a group of apparently identical bearings will complete before fatigue failure occurs. Thus, a single bearing can be expected, with 90 % reliability, to meet or . exceed the L10 or Rating Life for a given load and speed condition. Similarly, the L50 life or “Average Life” of a bearing is defined as the life that 50 % of a group of appar ently identical bearings will complete before failure. The L50 life is as much as 5 times the L10 or Rating Life. Where costand maintainance requirements are low, L50 bearing life may be an acceptable design criteria. However, replacement costs and lost pro ductivity usually outweigh savings gained from de signing to the L50 life. Adjustments to the calculated bearing life may be made to increase the reliability of bearing selection. Life adjustment factors can be applied to the life . * calculations to increase the statistical reliability or tp4>i account for less than optimum operating conditions. Life adjustment factors are listed in the Bearing Life Calculations section, on the inside back cover. Improvements in bearing life may be attained with special materials, heat treatment or processing techof the lubricant. Consult Andrews Engineering for assistance. considered and minimized. 48 >»»] i. i ● 19 MM3 THRUST BEARING MOUNTING DESIGN The installation and mounting of a thrust bearing varies widely depending upon the bearing type, application, assembly requirements and past exper ience. Proper mounting is critical to achieve the expected bearing life. Shaft and housing pilot diameters, backup shoulder and clearance diameters for each type of bearing can be determined from the Shaft and Housing Tol erance Tables (pages 51 - 52) and the guidelines below. Ball Thrust Bearings The minimum shaft and maximum housing shoulder diameters are calculated as follows: Shaft Shoulder Dia (Min) = (Bearing ID + OD)/2 Housing Shoulder Dia (Max) = (Bearing ID + OD)/2 Cylindrical Roller Thrust Bearings The minimum shaftand maximum housing shoulder diameters are calculated as follows: PILOT DIAMETERS A thrust washer should locate or pilot on the surface with which it has no relative motion. A rotating washer will usually pilot on the rotating shaft and a stationary washer would piloton the housing. Under normal operating conditions, thrust washers do not creep with respect to their backup surfaces and can Shaft Shoulder Dia (Min) = Bearing OD - K1 Housing Shoulder Dia (Max) = Bearing ID + K2 Bearing OD K1 K2 under 5" 0.17 0.28 0,28 0.36" 0.43 5 -8" 8-11" 11 -15" be mounted with a loose fit on the shaft and in the 15-22" over 22" housing. Several catalog series are provided with one small bore and one large bore washer. This simplifies cus tomer design and machining by permit!ng a straight, unstepped shaft and/or housing bore. The small bore washer is designed'to pilot on the shaft while the large bore washer is designed to pilot in the housing. Many thrust bearing series are designed with the same ID, OD or both. They require extra running clearance between the non-piloting washer surfaces and the shaft and/or housing to avoid cross-piloting of the bearing. This clearance also permits adequate lubrication flow through the bearing. Where re quired. 0.030 inches minimum clearance on the dia meter should be allowed. Shaft Clearance Dia (Max) = Bearing ID - 0.030" Housing Clearance Dia (Min) = Bearing OD + 0.030 BACKUP SHOULDER DIAMETERS Proper backup of each thrust washer is necessary to assure optimum thrust bearing performance and to realize its expected life. Shaftand housing shoulders should be sufficently large to provide full support of the bearing rolling elements. 0.55" 0.60' 0.39 0.50" 0.82" 1.13" 0.70" Tapered Roller Thrust Bearings The minimum shaftand maximum housing shoulder diameters are calculated as follows: Shaft Shoulder Dia (Min) = 0.9 x Bearing OD . Housing Shoulder Dia (Max) = 1.1 x Bearing l6 Shaft and housing shoulders should be of sufficient height or thickness to support the bearing loads without permittingexcessivedeflectionof the thrust washers. The shaft and housing piloting and backup surfaces should be smooth, square and sufficiently uniform to locate the bearing washers and support the thrust load. Shaft and housing finishes should not nor mally exceed 64 RMS. Better finishes may be re quired to satisfy precision or high speed appli cations. Maximum allowable backup shoulder squareness and flatness specifications should not exceed the total squareness tolerance. It can be circulated, accu rately metered, filtered and cooled. Oil more readily removes heat and contaminants from the bearing. Adequate sealing is necessary to retain the oil, as well as prevent the entry of contaminants. and oil mist systems are used where increased speeds and temperatures demand superior bearing Typical oil lubrication methods include oil bath, drip feed oil. circulating oil and oil mist. Circulating oil 56 LUBRICATION Perhaps the single most important consideration when selecting a bearing lubricant is the viscosity of the oil at the operating temperature. Minimum recommended oil viscosities at the operating tem perature of the bearing are: Selection of a grease should be based upon operat ing environment, temperature and bearing speed. Greases that perform well at high speeds and temper atures may cause unnecessaryrolling resistance at low temperatures. The following table is provided as a guideline. Minimum Viscosity 140 SUS Ball Thrust Bearings, Roller Thrust Bearings 160 SUS BELOW 32 TO 160 TO 32° F 160° F 250° F GRADE#0 GRADE #2 GRADE #2 500 TO 1,000 GRADE#0 GRADE#1 GRADEtt2 1.000 & OVER GRADE #0 GRADE#1 GRADE #2 TEMPERATURE SPEED (rpm) 500 Viscosities of various grades of oil are shown in figure 4 for temperatures-30 to+250 degrees Fahren heit. & UNDER GREASE LUBRICATION GREASE SELECTION GUIDE Grease consists of a lubricating oil suspended in a soap base. Oil separates from the mixture and lubri cates the bearing. Grease lubrication is generally restricted to lower speed and lower temperature applications, however, it simplifies handling and design requirements. Bearingscan be prelubricated with grease and stored. Grease provides an effective seal against corrosion and contamination and im’ proves the performance of mechanical seals. Sodium (soda) based greases can operate continu ously at 250 degrees F. but readily absorb water and L should not be used in the presence of moisture. Lithium based greases are resistant to waterabsorption and can operate continuously at 250 degrees F. Lime or calcium based greases provide good resist ance to water absorption but should not be operated at temperatures over 160 degrees F. Severe or heavy-duty operation may require lubri cants with extreme pressure (EP) additives to main tain boundary film lubrication properties. However, extreme pressureadditivestend to separate out with time and higher temperatures. Bearings require only small amounts of fresh lubri cant to perform satisfactorily. Provision must be made for periodic replacement of the lubricating oil or grease. Frequent relubrication with small amounts of fresh grease is recommended. The amount of lubricant in an application is impor tant, especially at high speeds. Overfilling a bearing or housing with oil or grease can be detrimental to bearing performance. The energy required to dis place excess lubricant during operation can cause overheating and subsequent bearing failure. Static oil levels should be at the center of the lowest Greases with mixtures of the regular base materials and synthetic base materials are available. Consult a qualified manufacturer of lubricants for specifica rolling element for horizonal shaft applications and just above the lower washer in vertical shaft applica tions. tions and assistance. The grades of grease are classified by the National Lubricating Grease Institute Code (NLGI) and an ASTM Worked Penetration Number: ASTM Penetration Number Grease should occupy 1/3 to 1/2 (maximum) of the air space in a bearing housing. The housing should be properly vented to allow thermal expansionand for relubrication. Drain plugs, appropriately placed, facilitate the draining of oil, waterand the purging of old grease from a bearing housing. The Mixing of lubricants is not recommended as it GRADE #0 355-385 may result in the formation of alkalies or acids which GRADE #1 GRADE #2 310-340 will corrode the roiling contact surfaces. The work area should be as clean as possible. Mois ture and contaminants must be excluded from the area while bearings are being handled and installed. All equipment components and tools must be clean. Housings and covers should be checked for hidden debris or contaminating dust. All mounting surfaces should be inspected for proper contact. Nicks or scuffs which could cause stress areas should be removed. REMOVE THE BEARING FROM ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING ONLY WHEN READY TO BE INSTALLED. STORAGE Particular attention must be paid to storage and subsequent handling of anti friction bearings to assure satisfactory performance. Andrews bearings are carefully inspected, cleaned and lubricated with a corrosion inhibiting slush, packaged within a vapor barrier. Others are also boxed in bound corrugated or wooden containers. This packaging assures reasonable shelf life when stored under satisfactory conditons. Improper storage of bearings may allow moisture and foreign particles to gather on the load bearing surfaces and cause significant reduction of bearing life. Bearings should be stored in a clean dry area in their original packaging UNTIL READY TO INSTALL. Bearing Life Formulas and Nomographic Overleaf E ●%%> /● BEARING LIFE CALCULATIONS Bearing life is the number of revolutions or length of time a bearing is expected to operate under defined load and speed conditions before fatigue of the rol ling contact surfaces occurs. Shaft and housing size limitations, lubrication, design weight, etc., must be considered when mak ing a bearing selection. Once a bearing has been selected, only load, speed and operating conditions determine the theoretical L10 or "Rating” life. Andrews Engineering assistance is available for bearing selection and design recommendations. The L10 life is the life in revolutions or hours that a bearing can be expected to meet or exceed with 90 percent reliability. The L10 life for a bearing can determined from the following; are; Reliability Life 90% L10 1.00 95% L5 0.62 96% L4 0.53 97% L3 0.44 98% L2 0.33 99% LI 0.21 Reliability Fi Table 2 The Equivalent Dynamic Thrust Load (T) L10 Life - AF x RF x (Ca/T)^ x 10® Revolutions 10/3 culated. constant, centric thrust load wh plied to a rotating thrust bearing will res same life as would be attained under actu Roller Thrust Bearings Only; ing conditions.
