This method of separation works on the property in which the different coloured components of a liquid-liquid mixture travel at different rates on paper because some coloured components are more attracted to paper than others. Chromatography is very useful in scientific research because it gives quick results, is easy to handle and requires very small amounts of mixture. It is often used to test a substance for purity and is also widely used in the testing of dyes in food and other industries. Representing in a Cornell Note format: PAPER CHROMATOGRAPHY What does the method identify? What separates out of the mixture? DEFINITION/EXPLANATION: Separate and identify the different coloured liquid components in a liquid-liquid mixture. What enables the method to work? HOW IT WORKS: Based on the property of: Diff. travel rates on paper for different coloured liq. components, due to varying levels of attraction Why is it so useful? ADVANTAGES/BENEFITS: • quick results • easy to handle • requires very small amounts of mixture. How is the method used/ applied? USES: • often used to test a substance for purity • is also widely used in the testing of dyes in food & other industries. • Diff. coloured components in the liq.-liq. mixt are separated & identified. • It works cos’ some different coloured components of a liq-liq mixt travels faster than others, on paper. • It’s quick, easy to use & demands small amts. • Chromatography is usually used to test a substance for purity (e.g. food dyes) © 2023 High Achievers Training Consultancy Pte Ltd All Rights Reserved Cornell Notemaking Method 2 METHODS FOR NOTEMAKING 1. 2.
