UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION, WINNEBA FACULTY OF SCIENCE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY NAME: BESSAH KWEKU KUMANU INDEX NUMBER: 200023934 SUPEVISOR: DR. BENJAMIN GHANSAH INTRODUCTION According to Tombrella (2020), The teaching philosophy is a statement of one’s beliefs and thoughts about what’s important in teaching and learning. It’s often a one- to twopage written description of how and why one teaches the way one does. It transcends every decision and directs the course of learning in the classroom. My teaching and learning philosophy has emerged from values that are learnt from several exposures and life experiences from my parents, my teachers and from my own experience as a student on campus and during my Teaching. CONCEPTUALIZATION OF LEARNING Learning as a word carries at least two meanings that is, behavior and change. However, learning cannot be defined or merely explained as just change and behavior. This is the fact that, not all change is learning. According to Sanli (2013), learning can be viewed as a relatively permanent change in behavior. CONCEPTUALIZATION OF TEACHING From what I'm knowledgeable, teaching is the process through which a more knowledgeable someone aids a less knowledgeable individual in their overall growth and development. Philip Schlech asserts that teaching is the art of getting students to behave in ways that are thought to promote learning, including efforts to get students to behave. STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHILOSOPHY In line with the constructivist theory of learning, which holds that learning is an active process in which students gain meaningful ideas based on their prior or present knowledge, my teaching philosophy is that "students are taught where to look but are not told what to see." I believe that empowering students to articulate their ideas in their own words helps them learn more effectively. Students get a sense of involvement in the teaching and learning process, which boosts their confidence. This concept also permits the teacher to use instructional strategies as appropriate to ensure that a student fully grasps a lesson. VALIDITY OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Since knowledge cannot be transferred straight from one knowing person to another, my teaching style is based on the constructivist theory of learning, which maintains that students must be actively involved in the teaching and learning process (Byer 2002). This philosophy is valid owing to the reason stated below; • Learners feel being part of the teaching and learning process. • It develops their communication skills. • It arouses and sustains their interest towards the subject since they know they will be allowed to make contributions and suggestions if they like to. • It reduces the effect and energy that teacher puts into teaching to let learners understand a concept. APPLICATION OF MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY During my Teaching, my teaching philosophy was put into practice. I got the attention of my supposed class by posing questions based on the RPK and the stated learning objectives. I viewed education as a partnership in which both parties have obligations. If a teacher has a duty to make the class interactive, then it is also the student's duty to show up to class prepared and to participate fully in the learning process. Students who actively participate in their education will be able to think critically and will be inspired to make an attempt to understand the goal of education. CONCLUSION I will therefore encourage teachers to make lessons practical by engaging students through varieties of teaching techniques that will make them feel part of the lesson delivery and come out with a better understanding.
