Sections: Title/Abstract/Introduction
Goals: Construct a concept map including key relevant
terms/variables and determine relationships to create
appropriate links and concepts. This map should highlight the
range of issues that the article addresses. Make sure to note any
unfamiliar vocabulary and concepts that you can look up and
define.
1. Identify keywords found in the title/abstract/introduction (~8
or more words).
2. Starting with the broadest topic (i.e., aging, stem cell
differentiation), create a concept map by connecting and
making links to the various keywords enumerated above:
3. In your own words, what do you think the paper is trying to
achieve?
4. Write 2-3 questions that you have before proceeding to
reading about any data. These may be about any unfamiliar
terms (i.e., specific genes or pathways), any background
biology that is not fully explained/addressed, etc. Asking
questions right away helps guide how you research other
literature to help you better understand the concepts
discussed.

CREATE Worksheet 1
1. Keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4…keyword 8
Methylation, Primordial Germ Cells, Human, DNA, Mouse, Embryonic Germ Cells, In
Vitro, Pluripotent Stem Cells, Extended Culture, Reduction, Maintenance, Depleted
H3k9me2, Differentiation.
2.
3. I think the paper is focused on showing that…
The paper is trying to learn more about human primordial germ cells by allowing them to
be formed without going back to pluripotent stem cells once removed from their
environmental conditions.
4. Questions I have before I proceed to read the rest of the paper:
What epigenetic factors allow the removal of methylation from the
cells to occur?
What are the key factors in order to allow Human Primordial Germ
Cells to maintain their identity when taken out of their typical
environment and if so, would those key factors allow the HPGCs to
survive and proliferate as usual or even better?
