Learning outcomes covered

LO 02: Explain the fundamental aspects of all digital computers and the operating
principles of computer peripherals.

LO 03: Understand the principles underlying operating systems and system software.
Introduction
Computer architecture deals with the design of computers, data storage devices, and
networking components that store and run programs, transmit data, and drive interactions
between computers, across networks, and with users. Computer architects use parallelism and
various strategies for memory organization to design computing systems with very high
performance. Operating system and Computer Memory are very important subject domains
related to Computer systems.
Tasks
1. A microprocessor is a programmable device that takes in input and performs some
arithmetic and logical operations. It is designed to perform arithmetic and logic
operations that make use of small number-holding areas called registers. (15 marks)
LO 02
a) What are the common components of a microprocessor?
b) Explain the function of microprocessor?
c) How the processor components will help to make the computer faster?
2. Express your ideas for Operating System related areas are given below (20 marks) LO
03
a) What is an Operating System?
b) What are the types of operating systems available?
c) Explain the Hardware Protections of an Operating system?
3
3. Describe the following Operating Systems related terms: (15 marks) LO 03
a) I/O Controller
b) CPU scheduling
c) Dead Locks
d) Threads
4. What the most popular types of operating systems available and explain its functions
and characteristics LO 03 (15 marks)
5. There are many features available in operating systems that help to make the computer
faster and more powerful. Explain the features related to the operating system that
contributes to the speed and computer's performance. (15 marks) LO 03
6. Presentation and Individual Viva Session (20 marks) LO 03 / LO 02
General Guidelines for Students

Each team made up of 4 members

Presentation Duration: 15 min. Minimum 10 slides

Each member must participate in question and answers session

Harvard Referencing must be used accordingly

The presentation should be in a professional manner and with proper formatting.

Every group is expected to hand over the slides of their presentation on the presentation day.

The Group leader is expected to attach a member’s contribution declaration as the cover page
of this report.

Based on the presentation and the Q&A session the panel will grade the proceedings.

Students absent on the presentation day will not be awarded any mark irrespective of their
contribution to the group work.

The members get individual marks based on their performance in Q/A and presentation skills.
4

Clearly, easily readable text and suitable graphics (Graphs, Charts etc.). Limit the amount of
words you have on each slide. Suitable clear and readable font style should be used.

The student need to name the presentation softcopy with his/her name with initials and the
university number (not ICBT number), not your topic or some weird abbreviation of your topic.

You are required to submit the soft copy of the presentation slides to university.

Strict time limits will need to be enforced on student’s presentations. Therefore, student need
to have a proper practice before the final.
