Course Description
Employee learning and development is an essential contributor to any organization’s success. A strategic

areas of employee development towards an individual's career goals. It builds employee retention and
loyalty and promotes employee engagement and the organizational growth. Learn how to plan, develop,
and implement a training and development program that benefits employees and organizations alike.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Align your corporation's business strategy and culture with a training and development program
for your organization.
2. Conduct a needs analysis and report back to the management team.
3. Construct a learning plan outlining the target audience and delivery method.
4. Prepare a cost benefit analysis and develop financial justification for a learning and development
program.

Using a real/fictional company, develop a needs assessment
(organizational, task & person) to strategically plan training in terms
of objectives, content & methods of delivery.
Assessment 3: Training Design (Part 2) Cost-Benefit Analysis
and Evaluation
Building on Part 1, develop the training plan one step further by
looking at the costs in relation to the benefits before implementation
and how you will evaluate the effectiveness of the training in terms
of student feedback, transferability of training and ROI (Return on
Investment).
Assessment 4: Lesson Plan
Can you teach someone to bake bread or open a Twitter account?
Choose from a variety of topics to develop a lesson plan using a
template including goals, objectives, pre-requisites, materials,
description, procedures, assessment, conclusion, and follow-up.
The plan will be shared for feedback from 2 students using a peer
evaluation guide and you, in turn, will offer feedback on 2 lesson
plans.
Late Assignments
A 5-day ‘Late Bank’ will be provided to all learners. Use these days at your own discretion and without
explanation during the course. For example, you could submit your second assignment 3 days late and
your final assignment 2 days late, or just your final assignment 5 days late.
This is designed to provide you with some flexibility regarding personal situations, workload management
or other concerns that July arise. You do not need to let the instructor know ahead of time that you are
using days in your Late Bank. As you submit your work, simply note in the Dropbox or by email that you
are using X number of Late Bank days. Note: The Late Bank cannot be used for online discussion
participation (Online courses), an exam with a set day/time, presentations and/or group work.
V 2022-2023
Once your Late Bank days are used up, late assignments will be deducted 5% per day.
Learning Resources
Your course will make use of Desire2Learn (D2L), the University of Calgary learning management
system. Your instructor will describe how D2L will be incorporated into your course experience.
For tutorials on using D2L, go to: https://conted.ucalgary.ca/info/online-resources.jsp
Attendance
Your participation is required for one or more essential graded components to be performed/completed
during class time. Failure to attend may result in a failing grade for the component. Should you have a
scheduled absence, please let your instructor know with as much notice as possible. The instructor will
not review the information that you missed. It is strongly recommended that you find a “study buddy” who
can catch you up on any missed content.
Continuing Education Grading System
A minimum grade of C is required to meet certificate program graduation requirements. A grade of C- or
less is not sufficient for graduation and the hours will not apply to your certificate program. Please refer to
the graduation requirements: http://conted.ucalgary.ca/info/graduation.jsp
Grades displayed in D2L are not official. Approximately three weeks after your course ends, you will
receive an email with instructions to access your official course grade by logging into My Account at
