This edition of Margot Lee Shetterly’s acclaimed book is perfect for young readers. It's the powerful story of four African-American female mathematicians at NASA who helped achieve some of the greatest moments in our space program. Before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as “human computers” used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space. ... Gil ★★★★★ Great book for 12-14 year olds. Reviewed in the United States on 12-09-2019 I read this book before giving it to my niece. Ive also read the adult version. I would say the young readers version is edited for subject matter. And writen in a way to make complex issues understandable to a young reader. In parts, important subjects are deleted from the book. But if you have watched the movie, which is great, this version of the book more closely follows the movie. If you have a youngster that is interested in science, this is a great book to give. Its not a book to explain racial injustice or sexism in our society, so younger readers might not understand why the women were treated in a certain way in the book. As those part are fewer than the regular book. Otherwise it is a good book for budding scientists...... R Rebecca Maney ★★★★★ A Most Remarkable Story! Reviewed in the United States on 04-27-2018 3.5 stars 'That's one small step for a man . . . . . one giant step for mankind.' - Neil Armstrong Some of the most famous words of the last century were spoken from the moon. But who knew how much work went into the meticulous mathematical calculations that placed our American astronauts onto the cover of modern history. Some of these hard working professionals were not only trend setters in their field, but they were also young African American women, who had determined their way into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration position by position, having to over-prove their brilliance every step of the way. Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden should be unforgettable. However, it's a story that needed to be told and I applaud the author for telling it...... K Kelly ★★★★★ Great history! Okay book. Reviewed in the United States on 06-04-2021 I’m a reader, so this is almost blasphemy, but the movie is so much better! The movie found a narrative. The book is a collection of facts. Great, interesting facts, but lacking the kind of storytelling that makes a kid want to keep going. I couldn’t get through the original version and my kids didn’t much enjoy me making them read the young readers version. (For Homeschool) Amazing story- make sure kids know this history! But the book isn’t a compelling read...... More reviews...
