E-WASTE MANAGEMENT
FOR SAFER FUTURE

WHAT IS E-WASTE
All types of electrical and electronic devices or equipment that are being discarded or not in operation. It
includes a wide range of electronic products, such as computers, smartphones, televisions,
refrigerators, and other electronic appliances. E-waste is generated when these devices become
obsolete, broken, or unwanted and are disposed of improperly

E-WASTE WORLD WIDE
Latest estimates (The Global E-waste Monitor 2017) show that the world now discards approximately 50
million tonnes of e-waste per year — an amount greater in weight than all of the commercial airliners ever
made — of which only about 20% is formally recycled.

IMPACT OF E-WASTE
Environmental Impact:
Toxic substances can seep into soil and groundwater, contaminating ecosystems and posing a
threat to plants, animals, and humans. Burning e-waste releases harmful chemicals into the air,
contributing to air pollution and climate change.
Health Impact:
It contains hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, cadmium, brominated flame retardants,
and other toxic substances. Prolonged exposure to e-waste toxins can cause various health
problems.
Resource Depletion
Electronics contain valuable resources like gold, silver, copper, and rare earth metals. When ewaste is not properly recycled or recovered, these resources go to waste.
Digital Divide
Discarding electronic devices prematurely can contribute to the digital divide, creating
inequalities in access to technology.

SUCCESSFUL E-WASTE
MANAGEMENT
The key to success in terms of e-waste
management is to develop eco-design devices,
properly collect e-waste, recover and recycle
material by safe methods, dispose of e-waste by
suitable techniques, forbid the transfer of used
electronic devices to developing countries, and
raise awareness of the impact of e-waste. No
single tool or approach is adequate but together
they can complement each other to solve this
issue.

E-WASTE AND E-WASTE
MANAGEMENT NEPAL
• E-waste management is a major problem in Nepal,
especially in its rapidly growing capital Kathmandu. The
2011 Solid Waste Management Act is Nepal’s primary
regulation and does not mention e-waste. A lack of
policies has meant that informal actors are free to burn
wires to extract copper, extract precious metals from
electronics and dump the remnants in landfills
exposing both workers and the population at large to
health hazards policies.

E-WASTE MANAGEMENT NEPAL
CONT.
• According to the Department of Environment, Nepal
discarded 18,000 metric tons of e-waste in 2017 alone.
It has also accumulated 25,000 tons of battery waste
from inverters and solar panels that are not safely
stored and often exposed to natural elements. Most ewaste is either shipped to India by free agents taking
advantage of Nepal and India’s open border and India’s
lack of current e-waste importing policies. The majority
of e-waste however ends up in landfills and is mined
by hawkers who use open air burning to extract metals
like copper.
