l.You are in charge of designing a new fixture fo r a ~universal testing machinen tha t
will attach a tensile specimen to t he machine using a clevis - a U-shaped piece with
holes drilled through the two arms -
and a cylindrical pin tha t
passes through the
clevis and the specimen. If the maximum l oad exerted by the machine is 40 lcN and t he
p i n is to be made of some sort of steel , what is the minimum pin diame ter needed to
ensure tha t the shear stress in the pin does not exceed 600 MPa? Assume that t he
steel has similar elastic properties to pure Fe .
2. The d ; 15-mm-diarneter solid rod shown in Figure 1 passes through a D - 20-mm-diame ter
hole in the support plate. When a load Pis applied to the rod, the rod head res ts on
the support p lat e. The support plate has a t hickness of b = 12 mm. The rod head has a
diameter of a - 30 mm and the head has a thi ckness oft - 10 mm. If the normal stress
produced in the rod by load Pis 32000 Psi, determine:
(a) th e bearing stress acting between the support plate and the rod head ,
(b) the a v erage shear stress produced in the rod head.
{c ) the punching s hear stress produced in the support plate by the r od head
3. The steel pipe column shown in Figure 2 has an outside diameter of 8. 625 in. and a
wall thickness of 0 . 25 in . The timber beam is 10.7S in wide , and the uppe r plat e has
the same width. The load imposed on the column by the timber beam i s 356 kN.
Determine the
(a) Av erage bearing s tress at the surfaces between the pipe column and the u pper and
lower steel bea ring plates . (Imperial Units)
(b) Length L of the r ectangular upper bearing plate if i ts width is 10 . 75 i n. and t he
average bearing s tress between the steel plate and the wood beam is not to exceed 500

(c) Dimension "a" of the square lower beari ng plate if the average bearing stress
between the lower bearing plate and t he concrete slab is not to e xceed 900 psi.
