Communication Lab #3 Professional Boundaries NURS 2520 Foundations in Nursing Communication Laboratory Definition: Clearly established limits on the interpersonal relationship that allow for safe connections between service providers and their patients. Consider: Being with -not becoming the patient. Being friendly (respectful, courteous, kind) but not friends. The ability to know where you end and the patient begins. Boundary issues and/or clear crossings occur as nurses have become too involved with a patient and when nurses are under-involved with their patients. Communication Lab Objectives – Lab 3 TIPS for Healthy Boundaries Establish at your first meeting (or as early as possible) clear agreements about your role (including availability, best way to communicate with you and (sometimes) what to do if you meet in public. Decide what you are going to self-disclose- ensure it is related to the client’s goals. Too much self-disclosure confuses the client in terms of expectations of the relationship. Sensitive relationships often require frequent clarification of roles and boundaries- ask client to repeat back what you said (acre understanding; also give opportunity for clarifying questions). Use your supervisor if you have questions/concerns, especially if you suspect boundary issues are impacting your ability to proved objective, compassionate care.
