Wednesday, May 6, 2015 Women’s Hats: Paris, 1919 1919: The transition after the Great War - After the war ended and the soldiers returned from from war, Fashion houses reopen and things among men and women were different • Because women had to work during the war, they now felt liberated and did not want to go back to the same traditions they had before - Style of the hats changed because of hairstyle trends changing Prior to the war/Edwardian era - The women of the edwardian era were influenced more by their mother’s and grandmother’s style from victorian era; focus was all about femininity - Hair was longer and usually pinned up and big - This caused for a need for hats with a deeper crown and wider brim - Edwardian hats were usually embellished with flowers, feathers, and extra trim Post war: 1919 into the Twenties - Because of women feeling more independent and liberated they altered their style to be less feminine and more “boyish” - Bobbed hair became the new style: no need for deep hats - Hat crowns became fitted and wide brims slowly began to shrink - Cloche hate became popular • usually felted with added embellisments • sometimes made of straw or satin and lace - Bandeaus and Turbans were also popular along with other hair accessories 1 Wednesday, May 6, 2015 • Bandeaus were usually worn during athletics; Sometimes worn during special occasions. 2
