find ME! GEOTHERMAL ENERGY OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, students should be able to; a) Describe the Geothermal energy, b) create a flow chart to describe how energy is transformed to generate electricity in a geothermal power plant, and c)cite the importance of Geothermal energy in humans' lives. “ENERGY THAT COMES WITHIN” The class will be divided into three groups. Each group will receive an activity sheet. Each group has designated task. • Each group will write their answers or put their work on the manila paper. •You only have 10 minutes to do the activity • Present your work in in the class. Group 1-Explain what the picture is all about Group 2- Label the parts of the geothermal power plant that generate electricity Group 3 -Create a flowchart to describe how geothermal energy is transformed to generate electricity in a geothermal plant •The steam spins in a turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity •Cooling water cools the steam which it condenses back to water • When the water reaches the surface, the drop in pressure causes the water to turn into steam • Wells are well dripped deep into the Earth to pump steam or hot water to the surface • The cooled water is pumped back into the earth to begin the process again Rubrics 5 All 4 concepts Content correctly defined 3 are There are one or two There are three or more concepts that are not concepts that are not correctly correctly defined. defined. GEOTHERMAL ENERGY Geothermal energy comes from the Greek word “Geo” means earth and “Therme” means heat. Geothermal energy is a heat energy from the Earth. Hot water can be released through geysers, hot springs, steam vents, underwater hydrothermal vents, and mud pots. These are all sources of geothermal energy. Their heat can be captured and used directly for heat, or their steam can be used to generate electricity How does Geothermal Energy is generated? • In Geothermal power plants, the heats from deep inside the Earth is used to produce steam to generate electricity. These are the following steps are followed to generate electricity in a geothermal plant. 1.Wells are well dripped deep into the Earth to pump steam or hot water to the surface 2. When the water reaches the surface, the drop in pressure causes the water to turn into steam 3. The steam spins in a turbine, which is connected to a generator that produces electricity 4. Cooling water cools the steam which it condenses back to water 5 .The cooled water is pumped back into the earth to begin the process again. • Power plants are built in area where it is particularly hot just below the surface such as near group of geysers, hot springs or volcanic activity.
