About This Manual
This manual describes the field installation of the Forte Gantry, Collimator Exchanger and Patient
Table.
This manual describes two models of Forte Cameras:
• Forte with Atlas Electronics Rack (Forte Atlas) - manufactured before November 2000
which require an additional Atlas Rack in the camera room.
• Forte with Power Pack (Forte Power Pack) - manufactured after December 2000 which
have a slightly larger compartment behind the Gantry. That compartment contains the
electronic components formerly contained in the separate Atlas Electronics Rack.

Important
To avoid difficulty when aligning the Exchanger to the Gantry, you must follow
the sequence of steps in this manual.

You must have a digital level with 0.01° precision to perform the Gantry
Leveling Adjustment and the Gantry Roll Adjustment at Zero Adjustment.
The Philips Nuclear Medicine part number for a digital level is 9999-5307.

Forte Gantry Installation Instructions
I. Introduction
Before beginning the installation, verify that the path (halls, elevators, doors, etc.) to the
imaging room is large enough for the Dolly-mounted Gantry to pass.
You will use a Dolly (2155-3700) to lift the Gantry off the shipping skid and move the
Gantry to the imaging room. If the elevator or halls will not accommodate the normal
Dolly (91" length), you must swap smaller side plates after getting the Gantry off the
skid. Instructions for doing this appear later.
Additionally, verify that:
A. the floor under the Exchanger Rails is level and flat within ±1/8" (3 mm),
B. the floor under the Exchanger in the "exchange" position is at the same level as the
floor under the Gantry Leveling Feet within ±1/8" (3 mm), and
C. the floor under the four Patient Table Wheels is at the same level as the floor under
the Gantry within ±1/4" (6 mm).
If the floor does not meet the above levelness requirements, you may have to pour a pad
under the Gantry, Exchanger Rails and Patient Table. If you have to pour a pad, you
must taper the pad beyond the Gantry, Rails and Table footprint to avoid trip hazards.

II. Removing Gantry from Pallet
Note: It requires two people to position the Gantry Dolly (2155-3700), attach it to
the Gantry and move the Gantry.
WARNING Never leave the Gantry unsupported!
The center of gravity of the Gantry is only about 1” (2.5 cm) behind the
front edge of the Gantry. If you attempt to move the Gantry (even just
“nudge” the Gantry) when the Gantry is not supported by either the skid,
a Dolly or a Gantry Support Leg, the Gantry WILL tip over! Since the
Gantry weighs 2,156 lbs (978 Kg), you will not be able to stop a falling
Gantry! A falling Gantry will cause major damage and may cause
significant injury or death!
A. Note: Remove the Bottom Rear Gantry Cover and swing the Gantry PC door to its
open position (requires removing two screws). If you fail to do this, you will not be
able to attach the gantry bolts in a later step!
B. On only one side of the Gantry, remove the shipping bracket that attaches the
Gantry to the skid.
WARNING
Do not remove the shipping brackets from both sides of the Gantry simultaneously.
The Gantry is very likely to tip over if you remove both shipping brackets!
C. Securely attach one half of the Dolly (2155-3700) to that side of the Gantry using
the same screws you removed in the previous step.
D. On the other side of the Gantry, remove the other shipping bracket; securely attach
the other half of the Dolly to that side of the Gantry.

E. On both sides of the Dolly, attach the two Connecting Plates.
WARNING. You must install the two Connecting Plates before moving the Gantry.
If you do not attach the two Connecting Plates and the Gantry “high centers” as the
Dolly passes over an unlevel surface (like a ramp), the Dolly will not restrain the
Gantry. An unrestrained Gantry WILL fall, cause major damage and may cause
significant injury or death!

F. Use the wheels on the Dolly to raise the gantry off the skid.

III. Moving the Gantry
Note: After you use the Dolly to get the Gantry off the skid, if you must move the
Gantry and Dolly into a small elevator or around a tight corner, you must replace the
normal side plates with shorter side plates. Shorter side plates, 2155-2355, come in
the crate with the Dolly. If you replace the side plates on only one Dolly, the length
will decrease from 91" (231cm) to 82" (208cm). If you replace the Side Plates on
both Dollies, the length will decrease to 73" (185cm). Instructions for changing Side
Plates follow.
A. If you must change to the smaller Side Plates, do these steps:
1. Place a wooden block under one corner of one Dolly.
2. Lower Gantry onto the wooden block by turning the Dolly handles counter
clockwise.
WARNING. Do NOT attempt to change Side Plates on BOTH
Dollies at the same time. An unsupported Gantry WILL fall and
WILL cause major damage and may cause significant injury or
death!
3. Remove both Connecting Plates (not the Side Plates). See previous illustration.
4. Remove the four bolts holding one Wheel Assembly on one corner of the
Gantry.

5. Remove the 11 bolts holding the Side Plate on the same corner, and set the Side
Plate aside.

6. Attach one smaller Side Plate by re-inserting the 11 bolts.
7. Re-attach the Wheel Assembly.
8. Move the wooden block to a different Dolly corner and repeat steps “1” through
“7” for each of the other three Side Plates.
9. Re-attach the two Connecting Plates.
B. Move the Gantry to the imaging room.

IV. Removing Exchanger from Pallet
A. Remove packing material from Exchanger Crate.
B. Remove the Ramp from the front part of the Exchanger.
C. Put the Ramp in front of the Crate and secure it to the Crate with the Lock Links.
D. Remove the banding and 2" x 2" brace on the front of the Crate.
E. Roll the Exchanger forward down the Ramp.
F. Roll the Exchanger to its position near the Gantry in the imaging room using the
four Dolly Wheels.
G. When you have the Exchanger positioned near the Gantry, locate the four Leveling
Screws on each of the four Dolly Brackets.

H. Crank the four Leveling Screws down until the four Dolly Wheels are off the floor.
I. Use the Quick Release Bracket on each Dolly Bracket to release each Dolly Wheel
from its Dolly Bracket.
J. Crank the four Leveling Screws up until the Exchanger is sitting on its own wheels.
K. Remove the Rear Cover from the Exchanger.
L. Remove the four Dolly Brackets.
Warning: Do not move the Exchanger with the rear Drive Wheel touching the floor.
You may damage the Exchanger Drive mechanism. Place a towel under the rear
Drive Wheel so it will slide.
Note: After you have mounted the Detectors on the Gantry, put the Exchanger Dolly
Wheels and Dolly Brackets in one of the Detector Crates and return them to Adac.

V. Drilling & Installing Bolts or Screws into a Steel Plate
If the hospital installed a steel plate to strengthen their floor, follow the instructions in
this section; otherwise skip to part VI of this procedure.
A. You can secure the Gantry to a customer-installed steel plate by either
through-bolting or, if the steel plate is at least 1/2" (13mm) thick, by drilling and
taping into the steel plate. The below instructions covers both techniques.
B. Obtain the Gantry Template (2155-3726).
Note: There are two types of Gantry Leveling Feet. Leveling Feet with round holes
(2155-2154 meet California seismic requirements. Leveling Feet with slightly
slotted holes (2155-2208) are easier to install; you may use slotted feet only for
non-seismic installations.
The above Gantry Template (2155-3726) will work with either type of Leveling
Feet.
Do not, however, use the older 2155-3702 Gantry Template with the newer
2155-2154 or 2155-2208 Leveling Feet. Also, do not use the newer 2155-3726
Template with older, large-slotted Leveling Feet (2155-2836).
C. By checking the Site Planning Drawing, determine if you will be installing the
Exchanger on the left or right side of the Gantry.
D. For right-mounted Collimator Storage Unit, put the template:
1. at least 29” (74cm) from left wall, and at least 59” (150cm) from right wall,
2. preferably 14” (36cm) to rear wall (8” or 20cm minimum), and
3. parallel to left wall (unless you must angle the Gantry).

E. For a left-mounted Collimator Storage Unit, put the template:
1. at least 36” (91cm) from right wall, and at least 59” (150cm) from left wall,
2. preferably 14” (36cm) to rear wall (8” or 20cm minimum), and
3. parallel to right wall (unless you must angle the Gantry).

F. If you can access the underside of the steel plate (for through bolting):
1. Use the drill guide that comes with the template and use a 1/2" (13 mm) bit to
drill 16 holes through the 16 drill bushings (4 on each corner) clear through the
customer's floor-mounted steel plate.
Hint: Having an assistant stand in the center of the drill template will help
restrain the template from moving while you drill the 16 holes.
2. Remove the template.
3. Using a Leveling Foot as a template, remove the tile or similar material so the
anchor and the Leveling Foot will rest on the steel plate.
4. Use 1/2" (13 mm) bolts (grade A36, A307 or better) and appropriate washers
(3“ or 75 mm diameter 3/8” or 10 mm thick), lock washers and nuts to secure
the Leveling Feet to the customer's steel plate.

G. If you cannot access the underside of the steel plate and the plate is at least 1/2"
(13mm thick) -- so you must drill and tap:
1. Use the drill guide that comes with the template and use a 27/64” (10 mm) bit to
drill 16 holes through the 16 drill bushings (4 on each corner) clear through the
customer's floor-mounted steel plate.
2. Remove the template.
3. Using a Leveling Foot as a template, remove the tile or similar material so the
anchor and the Leveling Foot will rest on the steel plate.
4. Tap the holes with a 1/2" - 13 UNC (or appropriate metric) tap.
5. Use 1/2" (13 mm) bolts (grade A36, A307 or better) and appropriate washers
and lock washers to secure the Leveling Feet to the customer's steel plate.
H. Skip to part VII of this procedure.

VI. Drilling & Installing Anchors into a Concrete Floor
(Skip this section if you are installing the system on a steel plate.)
A. Verify that:
1. the floor under the Exchanger Rails is level and flat within ±1/8" (3 mm),
2. the floor under the Exchanger in the "exchange" position is at the same level as
the floor under the Gantry Leveling Feet within ±1/8" (3 mm), and
3. the floor under the four Patient Table Wheels is at the same level as the floor
under the Gantry within ±1/4" (6 mm).
4. Note: If the hospital installed a steel plate on top of the floor under the Gantry,
they must have also raised the floor level under the entire table by the same
amount (perhaps using grout).
To avoid an uneven floor tripping hazard, the hospital should have gradually
tapered the floor away from the Gantry/Exchanger/Table elevation.
B. By checking the Site Planning Drawing, determine if you will be installing the
Exchanger on the left or right side of the Gantry.
C. Obtain the Gantry Template (2155-3726).
Note: There are two types of Gantry Leveling Feet. Leveling Feet with round holes
(2155-2154 meet California seismic requirements. Leveling Feet with slightly
slotted holes (2155-2208) are easier to install; you may use slotted feet only for
non-seismic installations.
The above Gantry Template (2155-3726) will work with either type of Leveling
Feet.
Do not, however, use the older 2155-3702 Gantry Template with the newer
2155-2154 or 2155-2208 Leveling Feet. Also, do not use the newer 2155-3726
Template with older, large-slotted Leveling Feet (2155-2836).

D. For right-mounted Collimator Storage Unit, put template:

F. Using the drill guide that comes with the template and a 1/2" (13 mm) bit, drill 16
holes through the 16 drill bushings (4 on each corner); you must drill each hole at
least 4" or 10 cm deep (the anchors 3.5" embedment, the extra 1/2" allows for a little
slip before the anchor seats).
Hint: Having an assistant stand in the center of the drill template will help restrain
the template from moving while you drill the 16 pilot holes.
Note: If you cannot drill a 4" deep hole as required for Hilti Kwik-Bolt II anchors
(because the floor isn’t thick enough or the concrete isn’t 3,000 psi or better), you
must either:
1. use 1/2” (13 mm) through-bolts (grade A36, A307 or better) with nuts and 3“
(75 mm) diameter 3/8” (10 mm) thick washers on the underside of the floor, or
2. if you are on a poured on grade concrete slab, pour a quick setting cement (e.g.,
Rock Hard) into the hole, allow it to cure and drill into the Rock Hard to
achieve the 3.5" depth.
Note: If you hit rebar, you must cut thru the rebar by switching to a steel drill bit,
and starting with a small bit, work up to a large bit.
G. Remove the template.
H. Using a Leveling Foot as a template, remove the tile or similar material so the
anchor and the leveling foot will rest on the concrete.
Note: Because of the large vertical lift on the rear Leveling Feet and the overturn
moment on the front Leveling Feet (when the Detectors are 90° apart and the gantry
is at 90° or 270°), you must insert all 16 anchors in all four corners to their full depth
as described below.

VII. Install Leveling Feet and Gantry Support Legs
A. If there is any kind of “compressible” material (e.g., tile) covering the floor, do these
steps:
1. Without attaching the Leveling Feet and Gantry Support Legs to the anchors,
place the Leveling Feet and Gantry Support Legs in their correct positions over
the anchors; mark the outline of the Gantry Support Legs on the floor.
2. Remove the tile or similar material under the Gantry Support Legs so the Gantry
Support Legs will not be resting on tile.
B. Place the Leveling Feet over the anchor holes with the 10 mm holes toward the
outside (away from each other).

C. If using anchors, snug all four Leveling Feet with the anchor bolts.
If using through-bolts into a steel floor plate, snug all four Leveling Feet with the
through-bolts and washers, lock washers and nuts on the under side.
If using screws and tapped holes in a steel floor plate, snug all four Leveling Feet
with the washers, lock washers and 1/2” - 13 UNC (or metric equivalent) screws.

D. Put the Gantry Support Legs on top of the Leveling Feet.

are towards the front.

E. Back off the leveling nuts (or screws) completely so Gantry Support Legs do not
touch the Leveling Feet; there should be at least 1/8” (3 mm) between Leveling Feet
and sides of Gantry Support Legs.
F. Put the Gantry Template on top of Gantry Support Legs.
G. Align Gantry Support Legs so:
1. the appropriate four holes in each Gantry Support Leg are under the correct four
holes in a square pattern on each side of template, and
2. each Gantry Support Leg is parallel to wall (unless you must angle the gantry).
H. Snug the bolts holding the Leveling Feet and remove Gantry Template.

VIII. Torque Testing
A. If using anchors to secure the Leveling Feet, torque the anchor bolts to 50 ft-lbs.
You should be able to reach the torque value within one-half turn of the nut.
WARNING: If the bolt pulls up so you do not get the minimum 3.5" (9 cm)
embedment, you must either contact (1) the Adac Installation Manager, or (2) the
customer's licensed structural engineer.
B. If using screws or through-bolts into a steel floor plate, torque all screws to 38 ft-lbs.
C. Attach the two 10 mm screws on each Leveling Foot and torque to 50 ft-lbs.
IX. Support Leg Leveling
A. Place the Gantry Support Legs on top of the Leveling Feet.
Note: This next step is very important!
If not done properly, you will not be able to properly align the Gantry and the
Exchanger!! Furthermore, you cannot redo this step after mounting the Gantry!!
B. Adjust the height adjusting screw on each of the Leveling Feet so the Gantry
Support Legs meet all three of the following specifications:
1. The top of the front Gantry Support Leg on the “Exchanger” side of the Gantry
is 105 mm above the floor tile.

2. The Gantry Support Legs are 0.1° higher (0.2° for older Gantries built before
Nov 2000) in the front than in the back, as measured with a digital level with
0.01° precision (similar to Adac #9999-5307).
3. The Gantry Support Legs are level left/right.
C. To secure the leveling nut, install 17 mm screws in the tops of each leveling nut.

X. Mounting Gantry
A. Using the Dolly, place Gantry on top of Gantry Support Legs.
B. Use a 2.5” (6 cm) long drive and a 17 mm hex socket to bolt the Gantry to the
Gantry Support Legs (two bolts in rear, one in front, on each side). If you don’t have
a 2.5” long socket drive, you may have to remove the Roll Motion PCB and Roll
Motion Motor Controller in order to attach the bolts to the Gantry.
XI. Atlas Installation (on non-Power Pack systems)
A. Connect the large umbilical cable from the Atlas to the jack in the rear bottom of the
Gantry.
B. Run the small umbilical cable from the Atlas to the Mobile Acquisition Cart.
C. In the Shipkit, so you can use the Gantry before installing the Exchanger, find the
temporary cable (2155-5693) for connecting the Gantry to the Display Panel; run
that cable between the Gantry and the Display Panel.
D. On both Detector Mount Assemblies, locate the cable with the loose spade lugs;
either (1) tape those spade lugs so they won’t short out, or (2) remove that cable.
E. Plug the Atlas into a power source.

XII. Power Pack Installation
A. To mount the Power Pack unit on a Forte in which the Exchanger is on the left side
of the Gantry (viewed from front of Gantry), you must swap the "Collimator Cable
& Mobile Cart Cable" Tower and the "Disk Drive & Power Switch" Tower.

B. To swap the two towers, remove four screws per tower, remove virtually all
tie-wraps, and allow 2 or 3 hours.
C. On the rear of a Power Pack Gantry, you will find two Flange Side Mounting
Brackets . You will secure the Power Pack to the Gantry with those brackets.

D. Slide the entire Power Pack unit sideways from its skid until the Power Pack unit is
over the Gantry Support Legs; ensure you have something under the rear of the
Power Pack unit (e.g., wood blocks) so you can leave a gap of about 15 inches (38
cm) between the Power Pack unit and the Gantry.

E. Connect these cables from the Power Pack unit to the Gantry:

G. Carefully slide the Power Pack unit forward to within about 2" of the Gantry; ensure
no wires are caught between the Gantry and the Power Pack unit; push the Power
Pack unit against the Gantry so that the Power Pack unit's bottom lip goes over the
base of the Gantry.
Note: Ensure none of the metal connectors will touch the Collision board in the front
right side of the Power Pack unit.
H. Attach the Power Pack unit to the Gantry using four screws on top and two screws
into each of the Flange Side Mounting Brackets.
I. Run the small umbilical cable from the Atlas within the Power Pack to the Mobile
Acquisition Cart.
J. In the Shipkit, so you can use the Gantry before installing the Exchanger, find the
temporary cable (2155-5693) for connecting the Gantry to the Display Panel; run
that cable between the Gantry and the Display Panel.
K. On both Detector Mount Assemblies, locate the cable with the loose spade lugs;
either (1) tape those spade lugs so they won’t short out, or (2) remove that cable.
L. Plug the Forte into a power source.

XIII. PegUltra Installation
A. Network the Atlas, PegUltra and Gantry PC by referring to the Networking Manual
(9202-0148) and the software load manual.
B. Plug the PegUltra 60 into a power source.
XIV. Gantry Power Up
A. If there is no PegUltra in the camera room, interface a monitor and a keyboard to
Gantry PC.
If a PegUltra is nearby, do a remote Login to the Gantry PC from the PegUltra and
initiate the motdiag diagnostic (see procedure 9355-1016 or manual 9202-0162).
B. Power up the three breakers on back of Gantry.
C. Press the Override Button on the Display Panel.
D. When a message appears on the Display Panel indicating that Gantry Calibration is
necessary, press ENABLE to calibrate the system.

XV. Mounting Detectors on the Gantry
A. Using the Handcontrol, put Gantry Rotate at 180°; that will put the Detector #1
Mount Assembly at the bottom of the Gantry.
B. Remove the top of the crate containing Detector #1.
C. With a pallet jack, place the crate containing Detector #1 in front of the Gantry.
Note: Since the detectors are not interchangeable, ensure you working with Detector
#1 and Detector #1 Mount Assembly!
D. Verify that the small Collision and Actuator/Motor wires on the sides of the
Detector #1 Mount Assembly are taped in a position where you will not crush them
while attaching the Detector.

F. Loosen, by one turn, each of the eight socket head screws that hold the Detector

G. With the pallet jack and being careful not to hit the Power Supply and Radius Motor,
slide the Detector and Crate toward the Detector Mount Assembly until the

Note: In the next step, be very careful installing the bolts and pin (shoulder) bolts. It
is very easy to strip the threads.

Assembly by installing M-16 x 40 bolts and D16 x 30 pin (shoulder) bolts in the

J. Once the Detector is level, tighten the six bolts behind the Detector, and tighten the
three bolts and two pin bolts on each side of the Detector to these torque values:
the six M16 x 40 bolts on the sides: 150 ft-lbs
the six 3/8" bolts in the rear:

the four pin bolts on the sides:
90 ft-lbs
K. Re-tighten, and torque to 60 ft-lbs, each of the eight socket head screws on the sides
of the Detector Side Plates that you previously loosen by one turn.
L. Remove the wood "caps" on the tops of the Detector Crate.

XVII. Detector Wiring
A. Power off the Detectors by turning off the three breakers on the rear of the Gantry.
B. Connect all the other cables to each Detector.
C. Power on the Gantry and Detectors.
XVIII. Removing Shipping Bolt
Important. There is a shipping bolt that secures Detector #2 in the 180° position
relative to Detector #2. You must do the following step to remove that bolt before
attempting to put Detector #2 in the 90° relative position.
A. Rotate the Gantry to 0° so Detector #1 will be on top.
B. Locate the shipping bolt on the ring behind Detector #1.

XIX. Gantry Roll Adjustment and Detector #2 Calibration
A. Perform the Gantry Roll and Zero Adjustments as described in the 9202-0162
manual, Section 3.
Note: When performing the Gantry Roll and Zero Adjustments in 9202-0162, ensure
you:
1. have a digital level with 0.01° accuracy (e.g., Adac #9999-5307), and
2. rotate the Gantry until Detector #1 is level within ± 0.08° before aligning the
SW1/SW4 board and adjusting the Roll Limit board.
B. Perform the Detector #2 Calibraton at Zero as described in the 9202-0162 manual,
Section 4.
Note: When performing the Detector #2 Calibration at Zero procedure in
9202-0162, ensure the Detector is level within ± 0.08°.

Right Hand Forte Exchanger Installation Instructions
This section describes the installation of an Exchanger on the right side of the Gantry. If
you are installing an Exchanger on the left side of the Gantry, you must convert the
Exchanger for Left Side mounting as Section 3 describes.
I. Gantry Checks
A. Ensure the Gantry is level as Section 1 describes.
B. Ensure the Gantry Center of Rotation is 112.5 cm above the floor, or higher, as the
last page of Section 1 describes.
C. Power up the Gantry and Atlas.
D. Rotate the Gantry so Detector #1 is on top and Detector #2 is on the bottom.
E. With a level, ensure that Detector #1 is horizontal in the left/right direction. If it is
not horizontal, redo the Gantry Rotate at Zero adjustment (page 1-27, step #XIX.A).
F. With a level, ensure that Detector #2 is horizontal in the left/right direction. If it is
not horizontal, redo the Detector 2 Calibration at Zero (page 1-27, step #XIX.B).
G. If you haven't already, remove the Exchanger from pallet as Section 1 describes and
place the Exchanger near the right side of gantry.
Hint. Putting towels under the wheels makes the easier to move short distances.
H. Remove the Rear Exchanger Cover (but keep the Front Exchanger Cover on).

III. Collimator Loading and Eccentric Checks
A. Load a short bore Collimator that the customer will frequently use (e.g., VXGP) on
each Detector, and adjust and Locktite the Collimator and Detector Eccentrics as
Appendix A describes.
B. Use a plumb line to see if the Detector #1 and Detector #2 Collimator Eccentrics are
vertically aligned. If not aligned, you must adjust Gantry Rotate.
Note: If these Eccentrics are not vertically aligned, you will not be able to perform
collimator exchanges.

3. Place a digital level on the aluminum side plates (requires removing Rear
Exchanger Cover) and check the levelness of the Exchanger Base along both the
short axis and long axis. Both the short and long axis must be level within
±0.01°
4. If (1) the Exchanger's Center of Rotation is 112.2 cm, or equal to the actual
height of the Gantry’s Center of Rotation as measured on the last page of
Section 1, and (2) the exchanger is level in both planes, skip the Exchanger
Height and Level Adjustment instructions that follow.

D. Rotate the Position Slip Wheel clockwise until it lines up with the Exchange Sensor
and you hear a relay click from inside the Gantry base plate; if you hear a second
click you have gone too far. Another way to verify alignment is to check the
CollExchInExchPos bit in motdiag to see if it is high (1).

IX. Long Axis Vertical Check
A. See if the distances from the Exchanger "face" (front cover attached) to the nearest
sides of both Detector #1 and #2 are 62 mm ± 2 mm (long axis vertical check).

B. If the distances from the Exchanger "face" to both detectors are not the same (±2
mm), change the Exchanger vertical axis by readjusting height of the Rear Wheel
Assembly as described previously.
C. If the distance from the Exchanger "face" to the side of Detector #2 is not 62 mm ±
2 mm, do the following:
1. Determine the direction (in or out) and the number of millimeters you need to
move the Pivot with respect to the Exchanger.
2. Loosen the screws that attach the Pivot to the Exchanger, and, using a rubber
mallet, move the Pivot Mount the desired distance and direction.
Note: To make adjustments easier, place one piece of masking tape on top of the
Pivot Mount and a second piece of tape on the side of the Exchanger near the
first piece. With a pen, place marks on the tape so you measure movement.

3. After moving the Pivot Mount, snug its mounting screws, move the Exchanger
between the "Exchanger" and "Park" position twice and recheck the distance.
When you reach the correct position, tighten the Pivot mounting screws.

X. Short Axis Position
A. Check to see if the distance from the Exchanger to the Gantry is 118 mm ± 2 mm.

following:

XI. Drawer 1 & 8 Alignment

C. Manually extend the lowest and highest drawers (drawers 1 and 8) by these steps:
1. Radius both Detectors to their maximum outer limits.
2. While standing at the rear of the Exchanger, lift the Master Lock Plate Solenoid
and the attached Master Lock Plate with one hand and simultaneously lift the
Top Drawer Locking Plate; push the Collimator Drawer out with one of your
thumbs. The Collimator Drawer is now unlocked and released.

E. If any of the eight eccentrics are not "captured", you must adjust (1) the Pivot Stop
Bolt, (2) the Pivot Mount on Exchanger, or (3) the Pivot Mount on Gantry.
Note: If you cannot position the Exchanger to capture all eight Eccentrics, set the
Exchanger to capture the four Eccentrics on the lower Collimator; then change the
shims for the upper Collimator U- and V- notch Collimator Support Brackets as
described in Appendix B.

and forth twice, and then re-verify the position. After you complete the above steps,
if you subsequently change the Exchanger height, you must repeat the above and all

XII. Titting Upper Drawers
A. With a digital level, see if the upper drawers (drawers #5 - 8) are 0.2° higher front to
rear (to allow for sag when carrying collimators).
1. If upper drawers are not 0.2° higher in front, adjust the upper drawers by these
steps:
a) Inside the Exchanger, for the drawer you want to adjust, identify the
leveling screws (underneath) and locking screws (on top) on both rear sides
of the drawer.

b) Since the Round Bar is fixed, when you turn a leveling screw in, you will
be forcing the rear of the Drawer down. Thus:

XIV. Upper Drawer U- and V-Notch Adjustment
A. While the Exchanger is in the “Exchange” position, manually extend Drawer #8 and
as previously described.
B. While standing in front of the Gantry, radius in Detector #1 until the Collimator
Eccentrics touch the V-Notch. The center of the Collimator Eccentrics should be
1mm to the left of the bottom of the V-Notches on the front of the Collimator
Drawer.

C. If the Eccentrics are not 1 mm to the left of each V-Notch, but they are close to that
position (within ± 2mm), adjust the V-Notch Collmator Support Bracket sideways
so the Eccentrics are 1 mm to the left of each V-Notch.

D. If the Eccentrics are not 1 mm to the left of the V-Notches and they not close to that
position (more than ± 2mm), change the mounting position of the Pivot on the
Exchanger. These changes are described earlier (Section 2, page 2-11, step #9.C).

twice, and then re-verify the position.
XV. Mounting the Exchanger Rails
A. On the floor, mark the holes in the rails; drill appropriate sized holes and attach the
rails with concrete screws.

XVII. Collimator Loading

B. Adjust the Collimator Eccentrics (not the Detector Eccentrics) for those Collimators
(see related instructions in Appendix A).
C. Using those Collimators, adjust drawer tilt for each Upper and Lower drawer, record
the radius at the appropriate Detector position and unload those Collimators as
previously described.
D. Repeat the above steps for all collimators.
Note: If customer ordered a Pin Hole Collimator for a right-hand Exchanger, you
must:
1. leave drawer #5 vacant
2. remove the Latch Pin and Pin Actuator on drawer #5 (see procedure 9355-0142
on Titan in the "users/gbell/Forte" directory), and
3. load the Pin Hole Collimator in drawer #4 with the pin hole pointed upwards.

XIX. Software Collimator Identification / Measurements

XX. Earthquake Outrigger Installation (California only)

rails and adjustments of the Outriggers so the Outriggers (1) won’t scrape the floor,

Left Hand Forte Exchanger Installation Instructions
This section describes the installation of an Exchanger on the left side of the Gantry.
Installing an Exchanger on the left requires special modifications to the Exchanger and
several procedural changes. This section describes these changes.
I. Gantry Checks
A. Ensure the Gantry is level as Section 1 describes.
B. Ensure the Gantry Center of Rotation is 112.5 cm above the floor, or higher, as the
last page of Section 1 describes.
C. Power up the Gantry and Atlas.
D. Rotate the Gantry so Detector #2 is on top and Detector #1 is on the bottom.
E. With a level, ensure that Detector #1 is horizontal in the left/right direction. If it is
not horizontal, redo the Gantry Rotate at Zero adjustment (page 1-27, step #XIX.A).
F. With a level, ensure that Detector #2 is horizontal in the left/right direction. If it is
not horizontal, redo the Detector 2 Calibration at Zero (page 1-27, step #XIX.B).
G. If you haven't already, remove the Exchanger from pallet as Section 1 describes and
place the Exchanger near the right side of gantry.
Hint. Putting towels under the wheels makes the easier to move short distances.
H. Remove the Rear Exchanger Cover (but keep the Front Exchanger Cover on).

mm), change the Exchanger vertical axis by readjusting height of the Rear Wheel

1. Determine the direction (in or out) and the number of millimeters you need to
move the Pivot with respect to the Exchanger.

Note: To make adjustments easier, place one piece of masking tape on top of the

position (within ± 2mm), adjust the V-Notch Collmator Support Bracket sideways

XVIII. Collimator Loading
A. Load one more pair of Collimators onto their respective Detectors.
B. Adjust the Collimator Eccentrics (not the Detector Eccentrics) for those Collimators
(see related instructions in Appendix A).
C. Using those Collimators, adjust drawer tilt for each Upper and Lower drawer, record
the radius at the appropriate Detector position and unload those Collimators as

D. Repeat the above steps for all collimators.

Forte Table Installation Instructions
I. Introduction
Although you may do this procedure with covers installed on the Table, it is easier to do
without the covers. Therefore, if the Table arrives without covers, leave them off until you
calibrate and fully test the table. If the table arrives with covers installed, leave them on
during this procedure.
This instruction assumes you have already installed the Gantry and Collimator Exchanger.
II. Removing Table From Skid
A. Locate the four 1/2" shipping bolts that suspend the Table above the skid.
B. Turn the 1/2" shipping bolts to lower the Table down on the skid; remove the wooden
brackets from which the Table was hanging.
C. Use the ramp that comes with the Table to move the Table sideways off the skid.

table meets these three criteria, you will permanently mount the Caster Shims between
the Caster and the bottom of the Table.

table from each corner.

Verify that all E-stop switches (gantry, exchanger, table, handcontrol and
acquisition terminal) will stop gantry motions.
C. Gantry Collision Tests
1. Ensure the system is not in a "collision” mode (override light not lit).
2. While rotating the gantry with the handcontroller, initiate a collision by pressing on
the collision pad within the gantry bore.
3. Verify that the motion stops.
4. Check the input voltage to the 60 volt Power Supply by doing these steps:
a) On a Forte Power Pack:
(1) Locate the power cord that leads from the Power Pack into the gantry and
has an IEC connector labeled, "60V, PS-P4” which connects to another
connector labeled, "120 VAC Input to 60 VDS PS”..
(2) Disconnect those connectors.
(3) With a voltmeter, verify that 120 VAC is not present in the "60V, PS-P4”
connector.
(4) Reconnect the IEC connectors.
b) On a Forte with Atlas:
(1) Locate the filter on the right rear wall of the Forte Gantry that has an
output cable going to the 60 volt DC power supply.
(2) With a voltmeter, verify that 120 VAC is not present on the output of the
filter terminals going to the 60 volt DC power supply.
5. Verify that hardware, not software, removed the input voltage to the 60 volt Power
Supply by doing these steps:
a) On the Acquisition Terminal, select the option to ”Exit to DOS”.
b) At the acquire prompt, type: atlasutl
c) At the emulator screen, select: 10 (Telnet)
d) At the next screen, select: 2 (connect)

• For the detector whose collimators will reside in the bottom of the Exchanger (Head #2
for a right hand Exchanger, or Head #1 for a left hand Exchanger), install the
Collimator that the customer will use most often (i.e., VXGP).
• Adjust and Loctite the Detector Eccentrics to match that Collimator.
• Repeat the last two steps for the other Detector.
• Get the Exchanger installed and working (as described in Section 2 and 3 of this
manual).
• One at a time, mount all other Collimators on their Detectors, and adjust and Loctite
their Collimator Eccentrics to work with the Detector Eccentrics (without changing the
Detector Eccentrics).

Detector Eccentrics
I. Adjusting the Front and Rear Collimator Eccentrics on the First Collimator
A. Uncrate the pair of most frequently used Collimators (e.g. VXGP).
B. Inspect the position of the outside and ring-side Collimator Eccentrics for this pair of
collimators.
If the small holes in the outside and ring-side Collimator Eccentrics face toward the
center of the Detector, you do not need to adjust the Eccentrics; skip to step #II.
If the small holes in all four Collimator Eccentrics do not face toward the center, you
must adjust the Eccentrics as described below.

C. To adjust the outside and ring-side Collimator Eccentrics:
1. Ensure you have the Adac Eccentric Tool (2146-3700).
2. Remove the Allen-head screw holding Eccentric you want to adjust.

3. Apply Loctite to the Allen-head screw and reinstall; leave the screw loose enough
that you can turn the Eccentric.
4. Place the Eccentric Tool over the Eccentric and engage the small pin of the tool
with the small hole in the Eccentric.
5. With the tool, rotate each Eccentric so the small hole faces toward the inside of the
Detector.
Note: For the Collimators that you are installing in the lower drawers of the
Exchanger (drawers #1 - 4), it is especially important that you adjust the Collimator
Eccentrics so the small holes face towards the center of the detector. If you do not
do this, you may have to file metal from the Collimator Capture Blocks on the
Exchanger Trays.
6. Tighten Allen head screw with 27 in-lbs, or 150 cm-kg, of torque.
7. Check the position of the Eccentrics for the other VXGP (or most frequently used
Collimator), and adjust and Loctite as necessary.

II. Loading the First Collimator
A. For a right hand Exchanger, rotate the Gantry to 0° (so Head #2 will be at the bottom
facing up).
B. For a left hand Exchanger, rotate the Gantry to 180° (so Head #1 will be at the bottom
facing up).
C. On the rear of the bottom Detector, remove the Radius Contact Sense cover so you can
see the rear Detector Eccentrics.
D. Run motdiag and activate the Privilege Mode by these steps:
1. Activate motdiag as described in FS Manual 9202-0162, or procedure 9355-1016.
2. Activate the Priviledge Mode by these steps:
a) Press: CTRL P
b) Press the Space Bar
c) On the Handcontroller, slowly press in sequence (a few seconds apart):
Start, Stop, Pause and Resume.
E. To open the front (outside) Lock Bar, do these steps in motdiag:
1. Press: M (set motion) until you get
Det1 Lock Bar (outside) or
Det2 Lock Bar (outside) (depending on which Detector you have at the bottom).
2. Press: D (set motor direction) until Unlock appears.
3. While holding the front Latch Pin down with one hand (see below), press the S
(start motion) key with the other hand until the Det1OutsideBarUnlock field
changes from a 0 to a 1, then press the Spacebar to stop the motor.

turn with difficulty).

Eccentrics are set correctly. Loctite the Detector Eccentrics without changing their
position and torque them to 27 in-lbs, or 150 cm-kg.
If there is an outside or ring-side Collimator Eccentric that turns too easily, or does not
turn at all, you must adjust the corresponding Detector Eccentric. Use the Eccentric
Tool to adjust the Detector Eccentrics until the Collimator Eccentric just barely turns,
then Loctite the Detector Eccentric and torque it to 27 in-lbs, or 150 cm-kg.
Note: If you change a Detector Eccentric, you must check (and will probably have to
readjust) any Collimator Eccentrics (if any) that you previously set with that Detector
Eccentric.

IV. Loading First Collimator on the Other Detector
A. Rotate the Gantry 180°.
B. Repeat the above steps to load the most frequently used Collimator on the other
Detector.
V. Loading and Adjusting Other Collimators
A. After you have completed the installation of the Exchanger and have it adjusted so it
pivots and you can exchange collimators, load the rest of the Collimators as described
below.
B. As you load each of the other Collimators on their Detectors, adjust their Collimator
Eccentrics so each Collimator Eccentric will just barely turn.
Note: Do not change a Detector Eccentric unless absolutely necessary. If you change a
Detector Eccentric, you must check (and will probably have to readjust) all Collimator
Eccentrics that you previously set with that Detector Eccentric.

If you cannot position the Exchanger to capture all eight Eccentrics (Section 2 or 3) for the
Collimators in shelves 1 and 8, set the Exchanger to capture the four Eccentrics on the lower
Collimator; then change the shims for the upper Collimator Support Brackets as this
Appendix describes.
The procedure described in this Appendix applies to Exchangers manufactured after
December 2000. You can do similar shimming using washers on older Exchangers.
I. Changing Upper Drawer, U- and V- notch, Collimator Support Bracket Shims
A. Manually extend the highest Exchanger Drawer (#8) as described in Section 2 or 3.
B. Determine to which direction you need to shift the Collimator Support Brackets (toward
or away from the Gantry).
C. Remove the V-notch (front) Collimator Support Brackets and note the shims between
the brackets and the drawer. The shims on one side will probably be 1 mm thick, and 2
mm thick on the other side.
