1. There was one aspect of a topic that surprised me was the division and conflict in the Caribbean. I was very surprised to know that a lot of colorism originated from these conflicts in the Caribbean. I was surprised to learn that they even divided the people by rank using skin color. One piece of evidence that shows this is “Anti- Haitianism became compounded by color distinctions between the mixed race Dominicanos. “ 2. One reason why people from the Caribbean would want to migrate to other countries is to simply have a better quality of life. For example, when Jamaica became independent, the country was fully stable and couldn't provide security and safety to its people. If I were in that situation, I would migrate. Another reason for people to migrate from the Caribbean is to receive a better education. For example, in developing countries like Haiti, many people do not have access to higher education or any education at all. Many people migrate for that very reason. 3. The topic that we learned this semester that was my favorite was how the people living on plantations could hide their religion. For example, they would change the name of their deities to fit the rules and regulations of the European religions so they could practice their faith in secret. One piece of evidence that shows this is” their beliefs combined with various forms of Protestantism imported to the Caribbean.” I also thought that was a very designful way to go against the Europeans. 4. According to the film life and debt, jamaica had many economic issues. For example, Jamaica had to pay double the interest to the IMF compared to other countries in the world. Another major problem that Jamaica faced was that Jamaican farmers were basically making no money. For example, Jamaican potato farmers were bankrupted by Idaho potatoes. This type of issue was common in Jamaican agriculture. 5. In the film “ Who The Hell is Yuliet?” we learn many things that women had to go through in Cuba. Women in Cuba go through many different hardships. For example, in the film, Yuliet had to become a “ jinetera” which is a female prostitute at only 16 years old. It is hard to imagine having to turn to that kind of profession at a young age just to survive. Another thing women had to go through in Cuba was tough family relationships with a lack of support. In the film, Yuliet was abandoned by her father which also led to her having to become a prostitute.
