CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Entering the world of work is a point of transition phase that will be faced by everyone,
especially for students who are currently in the final semester. And of course, this phase is
also a phase that is highly anticipated by students where they can freely escape from all the
intricacies of heavy and annoying education, besides that they also hope that entering the
phase of the world of work will also allow them to get a salary to meet their needs. daily.
Of course, in this case, students have high expectations of what they will be like when they
work for the first time. But the reality they face is not as easy as they imagine because of
the many challenges and initial difficulties they encounter when they enter the world of
work, and one of the biggest challenges faced by students when they want to apply for jobs
is the lack of skills and abilities they have. Even though technically they have mastered
various theoretical lessons they learned in school and college, in fact it is still not sufficient
to meet the minimum requirements required by the company. In fact, it is not uncommon
for many companies to demand high minimum requirements just for a job that is still at the
entry level, this can lead to an increase in unemployment due to the lack of absorption of
labor from students. In addition, currently the world is experiencing the COVID-19
pandemic, which also contributes to the increase in the unemployment rate among students
in Indonesia.
To overcome the imbalance of abilities and skills possessed by students and those needed
by companies, many educational institutions, especially high schools, universities,
polytechnics, etc. have implemented apprenticeship lessons into their educational
curriculum. And a common practice carried out by educational institutions in implementing
apprenticeship lessons is to open a special semester program for internships, where students
get the opportunity to take part in an internship at the company for one full semester. Of
course, the procurement of this program can give students time to learn new abilities and
skills, learn to adapt to the work environment, and develop a professional career life from
1
an early age. An example of an educational institution that has implemented apprenticeship
lessons into their curriculum is President University, where this campus has long held a
special semester program for internships that is fully mandatory for its students. Because
apart from being a graduation requirement, it is also used as an effort by the campus to
introduce the world of work and careers to students.
1.2 Internship Goals
As previously explained, the internship special semester program held by President
University is simply a campus program held to introduce the world of work and careers to
students, where students can get the opportunity to learn various abilities and skills, as a
means to apply knowledge. knowledge that has been obtained since college, getting
guidance on procedures for professional behavior, and contributing ideas to solve problems
that are being experienced by the internship. On that basis, the author as an 8th semester
student of the Department of Management, Faculty of Business, President University,
Cikarang Baru proposed the Internal Quality Assurance Department of President
University as a place for the Internship Course Program to be implemented. The main
reason the author chose this place as an internship is because the author has an interest in
studying the theory and practice of implementing quality assurance management,
especially in the field of education which is a service provided by President University.
According to the author's own view, quality assurance is one of the most important fields
for business development today, no matter whether the company's business field is oriented
to providing goods or services, all of them must have their own quality assurance standards.
Because the quality assurance standard is not only limited to making a product pass the
quality test by the company's internal quality control division as well as from the external
quality control party, it has also become an added value that can strengthen the branding
of the product in the eyes of potential consumers. If a company does not have clear quality
assurance standards, it can make the company's products not sell well in the market because
potential consumers doubt whether the quality of the product is guaranteed by the company
itself, even though the product passes the quality test by external parties. In addition, other
internship goals that the author wants to achieve are as follows:
2
1. Studying the flow, systematics, and scope of work of President University's Internal
Quality Assurance Department
2. Learn how to work, authority, and the role of the Internal Quality Assurance
Department of President University
3. Sharpen personal, interpersonal, and social skills and abilities with the knowledge
that has been possessed during the lecture period
4. Exploring experience in the world of work, especially those engaged in
management and setting quality standards
5. Build professionalism for myself before plunging into the real world of work and
career
6. As a form of preparation and adaptation of students to take on various
responsibilities when entering the world of work after completing their education
at President University
7. As a requirement to fulfill the Internship Program provided by the Department of
Management, Faculty of Business, President University

CHAPTER III
INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES
3.1 Internship Job Description
Job description during internship at the Presidential University Internal Quality Assurance
Department is as an administrative staff tasked with assisting the work in making
documents related to the work process manual of quality assurance standards and the
determination of university quality minimum standards at the turn of the new academic
year and making projects updating news content about activities and work that has been
carried out on the website of the Internal Quality Assurance Department.
3.2 Description of Duties and Responsibilities
Carry out administrative tasks that have not been carried out by the Internal Quality
Assurance Department of President University, such as making document formats,
arranging online meeting schedules, making assessment audit tables, posting materials
related to campus education internal quality assurance.
3.3 Internship Assignment
3.3.1 Internship Activities
During an internship at the President University Internal Quality Assurance Department
which is carried out within 4 months. I got various assignments and knowledge about the
internal quality assurance work system in universities. The timeline distribution itself is as
follows:
•
1st Periode (June 11st, 2021 – July 11st, 2021)
During this period, I received many explanations about the ins and outs of the
President University Internal Quality Assurance Department, starting from the
11
history of university quality assurance, the establishment of an internal quality
assurance unit into a department, knowledge of the role of internal quality assurance
work, the process of how a quality standard is made, to an explanation of the various
problems of the many piles of tasks that have been neglected and have not been
done. In addition, I also dig deeper information regarding the provisions of internal
quality assurance of universities obtained from LDDIKTI, laws and regulations,
government regulations, and others and relate this knowledge to the knowledge I
have learned in the previous semester regarding quality assurance in operational
management studies. . Although at first I thought that this internship looked
unbalanced due to the difference between the given field of work and the area of
knowledge I already had. But at least I myself can adapt and learn the field of quality
assurance easily thanks to the assistance provided by a senior colleague who
previously worked in the President University Internal Quality Assurance
Department.
•
2nd Periode (July 11st, 2021 – August 11st, 2021)
During this period, I started working on an assignment from the Internal Quality
Assurance Department which was neglected because they focused on holding a work
program for establishing higher quality standards for the coming academic year and
assisting universities in preparing for an accreditation extension to be held in 2023.
However, this work was a bit hampered. because they had to move online
considering that at that time the government imposed regulations to work from home
during large-scale social restrictions to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
So that the tasks assigned to me include creating a database that can be used as a
liaison and storage of documents related to quality standard setting materials and
files for accreditation application requirements. Apart from that, other tasks that I
do are making quality standard manual document formats, internal audit monitoring
documents, and lastly, creating and scheduling internal quality audit online meetings
on Google Calendar.
12
•
3rd Periode (August 11st, 2021 – September 11st, 2021)
In this period, I received light administrative work assignments to make the format
of the quality standard setting document, to revise the format of the internal quality
audit monitoring results document, to collect the work documents that had been done
into the database, and to check the completeness of the documents that had been
entered into the database. Apart from that, I also made plans for making plans to
update news content on the website of the Internal Quality Assurance Department
•
4th Periode (September 11st, 2021 – October 11st, 2021)
In this last period I only focused on working on the task of creating news content
regarding the activities that have been carried out by the Internal Quality Assurance
Department for several months of internship. In the stages of the work process, the
tasks consist of making a timeline schedule for online interviews with superiors in
the Internal Quality Assurance Department, making a tasklist to be carried out,
conducting interviews with resource persons, summarizing interview answers, and
drafting news content.
3.3.2 Problems List in Internship Place
•
Each study program still doesn't understand AMI
The first problem found by the President University Internal Quality
Assurance Department was that there were still many lecturers from various
study programs at President University who still did not understand the IQA
(Internal Quality Audit) organized by the President University Internal
Quality Assurance Department. This is because many lecturers do not know
clearly about the term even though they have been collaborating in the
higher education quality audit process. In addition, the policy of higher
education quality assurance rules also often undergoes changes from the
government, making lecturers confused when participating in quality audits
13
•
There are still many lecturers of each study program who do not
understand the Semester Lesson Plan
Another problem that has been faced by the President University Internal
Quality Assurance Department is that there are still many lecturers in each
study program who do not understand the Semester Lesson Plan, even
though so far the lecturers at President University have always made a
learning syllabus containing plans for teaching learning materials for one
semester. Based on observations in the field, the cause of this problem is
due to the difference in understanding that has been known by the lecturers
and the understanding of the President University Internal Quality
Assurance
•
Lack of coordination between Presuniv IQA and other divisions
The next problem experienced by President University Internal Quality
Assurance Department is the lack of coordination between them and other
divisions, which causes frequent miscommunication when carrying out
work assignments.
•
Sometimes doing tasks that are not under their authority
The last problem is that sometimes people from the President University
Internal Quality Assurance Department are often asked for help by other
divisions to do tasks that they are not supposed to do because these tasks
are not related to their responsibilities. So this causes a lot of their workload
that has not been completed.
14
CHAPTER IV
PERSONAL RESULT & EVALUATION
4.1 Personal Result
I have to admit that during the internship that has been carried out in one semester, it can
be said that it is still too short and a little not in line with what I expected. This is inseparable
because from the beginning before this internship semester started I had difficulty finding
internship vacancies that could be applied for in accordance with the field of knowledge I
was studying, namely marketing and also all the work done during the internship had been
transferred to online and done from home also made the experience The internship that I've
always wanted to experience has become less. Even so, I still get the benefits that I can feel
in my internship at the President University International Quality Assurance Department
and these benefits are also in accordance with what has been described previously.
During my internship at the President University Internal Quality Assurance Department,
my role was only limited as an administrative staff tasked with helping to create documents
and databases for storing files, but behind that I got a lot of knowledge lessons that I had
never gotten before in class. Like at the beginning of my internship, I had to go back to reopening lessons on management in principle, re-learn the concept of quality assurance,
learn the basic rules of quality assurance imposed by the government, to learn the process
flow of how to make quality assurance management work well, effectively, and efficiently.
and efficient in order to achieve the specified quality results. The knowledge and lessons
that I get are not only technical but there are knowledge and lessons that I get for selfdevelopment such as learning how to communicate, learning to learn everything quickly
even though the field is contrary to the knowledge I have, learning to adapt to the
environment work, learn to be disciplined, learn to make documents neatly, and learn to
write formal emails to communicate as well and correct to supervisor.
In my own view, I feel that the internship that I had undertaken in the previous semester
helped me to understand the concepts of management theory that I had previously studied
15
by seeing firsthand the practices carried out by campus officials in managing the
operational management of President University itself, such as in the process of
determining short-term and long-term plans, making process flows and guaranteeing the
implementation of operational plans to be achieved, supervising the implementation and
execution of predetermined operational plans, and finally evaluating the implementation
of operational plans as development material to make new plans going forward.
In addition, I was also helped by the internship that I did where I was also able to
understand the concept of quality assurance management in terms of basic theory in
general, technical theory obtained from references to the provisions of internal higher
education quality assurance from LDDIKTI and BAN-PT, and also knew in detail direct
practice of the theory. I think from what I got, this shows that the internship held by
President University also indirectly helped me to introduce a small field of work in quality
assurance management which is very important for all industrial fields, especially the
education industry.
4.2 Personal Evaluation
The existence of an internship semester held by President University also indirectly helped
me to re-identify myself where I could find out what my strengths were, know my
weaknesses, know what things in myself I need to improve, and know what is something
in me that I need to develop and improve to be better. And that was all possible thanks to
criticism, input, and advice from people around where I was an apprentice who were able
to see things that I couldn't see in myself. Of course, I use all of these things as reminders
and lessons for the development of my personality in the future.
Finally, I feel that the internship that I have done has benefits for my personal growth where
I can find people who are willing to share knowledge that is not taught in campus lessons,
people who can see something in myself, and the people who taught me a view of
professional life that I will always remember.
16
CHAPTER V
RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Recommendation for President University Academic Affair
In this section, I just want to give a number of recommendations to President University to
improve the internship program for the better in the future, especially for 2019 students
who will undergo this internship program next year and of course these recommendations
are based on my experience during the internship. . The first is that the campus does not
only hold career talk seminars by cooperating with a number of companies from various
industries or seminars related to personal development, but also holds training workshops
related to the careers that students will take in the future. The second is that the campus
must also embrace its students who have been passive, have never participated in various
organizations, and who are still confused about future career planning because they still do
not have the skills that match the company's needs so that they can understand that the next
life is the start of their first career. . And the third is that the campus must also empower its
students by creating a lesson curriculum that focuses on real hands-on practice, especially
in theoretical study programs such as management.
5.2 Recommendation for President University Internal Quality
Assurance Department
And also I want to give recommendation ideas to President University's Internal Quality
Assurance Department for the problems that I have observed and know either directly or
indirectly from colleagues there, such as making a timeline table of each task to be carried
out so that lecturers or related parties can President University's Internal Quality Assurance
Department can find out the work assignments that must be done and know when the
deadline for each work assignment is, then President University's Internal Quality
Assurance Department must always proactively disseminate information about internal
17
quality assurance tasks. to all lecturers, campus officials, and parties involved in it, as well
as the Chancellor of the University's Internal Quality Assurance Department, must build
good communication and coordination both internally and externally with other divisions
within the campus by frequently holding briefings between fellow internal and other
divisions. relating to internal quality assurance for 15 minutes before starting work and
briefing for 30 minutes after finishing work on time before going home.
