I was with a group of businessmen, and we were dealing with a question—what is a good
person?
At a certain point during the discussion, one of the students, a young man of about 30,
described an event that happened at Christmas. He and his fiveyearold son were decorating the
Christmas tree, and a little boy came to the front door begging. If you ever visit Mexico, you will
see that the people there take begging as nothing to get upset about and nothing to get embarrassed
by.
So, this little boy came to the door, a boy about the same age as my student’s son.The father
and the son went to the front door, and the father went back with his fiveyearold son and said to
him, “Give him one of your toys.”At the words, the little boy quickly picked up one toy, and his
father said to him, “No, no, give him your favorite toy.”
And the little boy, like a little tiger, said, “No way!” He cried; he refused. But the father,
like a big tiger in a way, insisted gently, “No, you must give him one of your favorite toys.”
And finally the boy, with his head down, picked up a toy he had just gotten. The father waited
in the living room, and the boy walked to the front door with the toy in his hand. The father waited
and waited.
What do you think happened?

In 2013, I realised that I needed a break from the office work, so I set out travelling. But I
had no idea how much the decision would change me for the rest of my life!
Before travelling,I was always worried about what other people think of me. How I looked
and dressed was really important to me. I was always worried about putting on weight, getting
darker, wondering if I was goodlooking enough to socialise and be one of the people I used to
hang out with. It doesn’t matter now. I’m more confident with my colour, my weight, and how I
dress.
I used to compete a lot even when I was still a kid. I always wanted to impress people with
how smart I was, how I could handle any task ...But now, why should I feel like I need to compete?
I only need to impress myself. My life is already complete; I just have to make sure that whatever
I do will be positive(积极的) and make me a better person.
I was a 24yearold Filipina with a successful career(事业) and had all of the things I could
buy. But when I started travelling, I was no one. I have to learn a lot of things when travelling and
I love it!
I thought the only skills I needed to improve were Microsoft Office and networking. Well I
can now proudly say that I know how to fix beds in a hotel style, how to cook breakfast for a lot of
guests, and how to work in a restaurant!
Besides the skills I’ve learned volunteering, I have completed several certifications(资格证)
to start making money to support my new lifestyle. I am now a yoga teacher, an Ayurveda massage
therapist(按摩师) and an English teacher. Now, with the new skills and certifications, I can work
wherever I want!

The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest bridge in the world from 1937 when it was
completed until the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was built in New York in 1964. Today, it is still the
ninth longest bridge in the world.
For many years before the Golden Gate Bridge was built, the only way to get across San
Francisco Bay was by ship. And by the early twentieth century the Bay was crowded because of
them. In the 1920s, engineer and bridge builder Joseph Strauss believed that a bridge should be
built across the Golden Gate to solve the problem.
Many groups went against him, each for their own selfish reasons. Besides, the engineering
challenge was also huge—the Golden Gate Bridge area often has winds of up to 60 miles per hour,
and strong ocean currents(洋流) sweep below the surface. If all that weren’t enough,it was the
middle of the Great Depression, and funds were hard to find.
Strauss didn’t give up, and the Golden Gate Bridge history began when San Francisco
officials approved(批准) $35 million to build the Golden Gate Bridge. After the artistic design and
red color were chosen, construction (建造) work began in 1933. The Golden Gate Bridge project
was completed in 1937, an important date in San Francisco history.
Strauss was a pioneer in building safety. The Bay Bridge, which was being built at the same
time cost 24 lives while the Golden Gate Bridge cost only 12, a great achievement in a period of
time when one man was killed on most construction projects for every million spent.
32.What do we know about the Golden Gate Bridge?
A.It remained the world’s longest bridge for 30 years.
B.It was the widest bridge worldwide when completed.
C.It is of the same age as the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.
D.There are only 8 bridges worldwide longer than it now.
33.Why did Strauss want to build the Golden Gate Bridge?
A.To prove his artistic ability.
B.To build the world’s longest bridge.
C.To solve traffic jams at San Francisco Bay.
D.To make crossing San Francisco Bay possible.
34.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The necessity for building the bridge.
B.The hard time of the Great Depression.
C.The bad weather in the Golden Gate Bridge area.
D.The difficulties in building the Golden Gate Bridge.
35.Which of the following words can best describe Strauss?
A.Honest.
B.Patient.
C.Warmhearted.
D.Strongminded.

Dear Peter,
Sorry to hear that you are having a hard time learning Chinese, I’m writing to offer some
suggestions.
To begin with, don’t worry too much about it and trust yourself. As we know, Chinese is one
of the most complex languages in the world, so it’s normal for learners to find it difficult in the
beginning.Second, take every opportunity to practice speaking Chinese.A proverb goes that
practice makes perfect.Besides, read books and watch TV programs in Chinese and make friends
with Chinese native speakers, which provide you more chances to use Chinese.
If you follow my advice, I am sure you will find pleasure in learning Chinese.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

In 2004, my husband, Joe and I worked in a design company in Arizona. One day, when we
got back home after work, my tenyearold daughter Becky, and Joe were united in their desire
for a dog.As for me, I shared none of theirs.
“But why,” they pleaded(恳求).“Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.”
“But we’ll do it.” “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?”
“Yes, yes, and yes.” “I don’t believe you.” “We will.We promise.”
They didn’t. They wanted to walk the cute dog that first day. From day two, neither of them
thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her
shots, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one.As she looked up at the three new
humans in her life, she calculated,“The medium one is the most reliable.”
Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld( 心 灵 相
通).She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I
would understand—which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she would extend across my
stomach as I watched television, and snored on my homeoffice couch as I worked on my design.
Even so, part of me continued to reject walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised.“Not
fair,” I said to myself as she and I walked.“Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot
upon our return home.
In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both
laid off overnight.During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to
seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment.Every part of my
life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.

Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while seeking a job. I felt it a heavy duty to apply my
energy to the routine walk.Every time I walked Misty, I felt exhausted and fed up.One day, Misty
stopped in front of me, unwilling to move forward despite my dragging the rope.Dramatically, all
my anxiety, exhaustion and displeasure erupted like a volcano.I knelt down, burying my head in
my hands, tears rolling down my face. Then, Misty approached me and laid her head on my knees
to comfort me. I was a little embarrassed but grateful for Misty’s understanding. Then I stood up,
with my steps firm and powerful.
Paragraph 2:
Months going by, my life changed a little and I came to enjoy my walks with Misty. It felt
more like relaxation than duty. Misty shared my negative feelings and kept walking peacefully,
which comforted me a lot. Thanks to Misty’s silent companion, I regained the enthusiasm to life
and finally went through the hard times. With my unremitting efforts, I eventually got a new job,
and so did Joe. Everything seemed to be just fine and my family went back to routine. But
something did change—I had an earnest and faithful friend.
